Yes there were flaws, but Murray understood that he needed to get better players than Tyler Ennis, Cody Hodgson and Tyler Myers in the organization, and he was prepared to do that using the assets to his disposal as well as needing to draft top talent to the organization.

Say what you will about the results or the flaws of the players, that sort of mindset is what is needed for an organization that is back in mediocrity. There was an understanding of getting role players to support the main guys, with a certain character trait of having it in them to stick up for one another. Murray continued to try and improve his team throughout his tenure.

Give me another GM with that mindset.

Murray sucked. Stop with this revisionist nonsense.

Adams sucks as hard or harder. These aren’t mutually exclusive ideas.

If there is one thing Murray brought to the table, that the Sabres have rejected since, and seem to purposely reject, is the value of grit. They had Foligno and Deslauriers, and even Kane. Bogosian was mean at times. One of Botterill's first acts was getting rid of what little sandpaper they had left (including trading Foligno for Scandella or some nonsense).

Murray bled off assets and corrupted the health of the organization. If anyone misses Murray, just look at the McNabb trade.

I didn't even follow Sabres in Murray's time, so I can't miss him. But I think you can definitely find a better GM than Murray, Botterill and Adams, it's not that hard for a reasonable person, but...

Remember GMTM acting like someone had killed his dog when he had to "settle" for drafting a guy who would end up a cup winning no doubt about it first ballot Hall Of Famer with another organization and poisoning the team's relationship with the guy from the start?

Probably because he knew that McDavid was the far better player?

Reading comprehension would show you that I'm more focused on the mindset of Murray as his time as GM. THAT's what I want, NOT Murray.

At least Murray kept things interesting and was willing to part with a core that he didn't see working.
What? Murray got hired in Jan 2014. We already started a tear down/rebuild well before he got here. The only “core” level player left was Miller/Tallinder.

My reading comprehension tells me your original post was not reality so I didn’t specifically address it. But since you mention it.

The Sabres had already embarked on a tear down/rebuild. In the year prior to Murray’s hiring they had; fired Lindy (Feb 2013), traded away Pommer/Regehr/Leopold (2013 trade deadline) and traded Vanek (beginning 13-14 season). Murray came in and continued what was already started but went even harder into it.

I would hope a GM taking over a team tearing down/rebuilding would realize he needs better players.

I think you missed the point: a non-sociopath would not publicly state his displeasure over having to "settle" for a guy who would have easily gone 1OA in almost any other draft. He needlessly poisoned the relationship between Jack and the organization from day one with catastrophic consequences.

Oh, I got your point. If Jack is such a mental midget that he thinks someone making a face is poisoning the well, he's a bigger child than his off-ice actions indicate. Which wouldn't be a surprise.
