Maybe he would have been a better GM than Kevyn.
You know how you can tell Adams doesn't know what he is doing? He didn't build this team. He never had a 5 year plan like he said. He never looked at the teams weaknesses and tried to improve. He is a liar. He told us he had a plan. That plan was making the playoffs after 4 years.

Did he build the defense over 5 years? No.
Did he build the offense over 5 years? No.

He had no plan. Lets look at the draft. Every GM will tell you that you start with defensemen in the draft when building a team because they take the longest to mature to NHL level while forwards mature faster in general not exact science.

His first draft 2020 He should have been drafting with his plan in mind. Lets see who he started with. His first pick was Jack Quinn. His next pick was Peterka. Did he draft defense? 1 pick in round 7. Albert Lyckasen Just one defenseman that will never see the NHL.

How about 2021 defenseman? Owen Power 1st overall a left handed defenseman. Next first round pick he took Rosen. What about in the 2nd round? How about some right handed defensemen to build a difficult team to play against? You took Poltapov and Kisakov two Russian forwards. Out of 11 picks in the 2021 draft you took 2 defensemen. Both of them LEFT HANDED.

In the 2022 draft You got 3 1st round draft picks. Who did you take? Savoie, Kulich and Ostlund. Maybe the 2nd round you will grab some defense? Nope, you took a goalie Leinonen. What about in the 3rd round who did you take? Nope still no right handed defensemen. In the 4th round you finally took defense Matts Lindgren LEFT HANDED. Finally in the draft your third draft you took Komarov a RIGHT Handed defenseman in the 4th round.

So breaking down the draft in his first 3 years
27 picks
5 picks defense
2 picks right handed defense in round 4 and round 7 would not even be projected to make the NHL.

Thats right in 3 years he took zero right handed defensemen that would be projected to make the NHL yet he had a plan according to him.
Whether you take into account left or right handed 5 out of 27 picks were defenseman and only 1 in the first 3 rounds.

It wasn't until the 2023 draft he finally decided to take right handed defense.
2nd M. Strbak RIGHT HANDED Defenseman
3rd G. McCarthy RIGHT HANDED defenseman

In the 2024 draft?
2nd A. Kleber RIGHT HANDED defenseman
4th SP Brunet RIGHT HANDED defenseman

In the 2023 and 2024 draft Adams had
16 picks
8 were defense
4 were right handed

So, knowing that defense take longer to mature Adams literally had NO PLAN from the start. He only started to realize in the 2023 draft that he had no right handed defenseman in the prospect pool that would project to be NHL level defensemen.

Let sink in his first 3 years drafting 27 picks only 2 Right handed defensemen round 4 and round 7 and only 1 defenseman Owen Power in the first 3 rounds from 2020, 2021, 2022.

Its not about well this pick was good or that pick was good. Its about the design and plan he had when he took over as GM.

Yeah, I remember the 2022 draft well, when there were a lot of RDs (Warren, Casey, Luneau, Salomonsson) in the second round, but they took Leinonen, and then they said that we were going to take him almost in the first round anyway, and in general, I think he said that he was going to take a goalie anyway. How? Why? How did you come to that?

In 2021, he could easily take Morrow (RD), plus there were some other RDs there. Arizona take Moser at #60, we take Kisakov at #53. Caps take Iorio at #55.

Overall, I can't say Adams drafted poorly, but I did dislike some of his picks. And it started right away when he didn't take Rossi.

I get you can look at each pick in general and say it was good or whatever but where is the plan he had?

When you draft defensemen in 2023 and 2024 you are looking at 2025-2027 for prospects to be ready for the NHL. Hows that window looking?

Apparently he thought we didn't need defenseman and Jokiharju would fight for Norris.

He is a con artist who had no plan. When he was making moves when he first took over there was no plan. He didn't try to build anything.

He was just grabbing at pieces hoping it would work out. He wasn't even doing a good job at that.

In 5 years Connor Clifton is the only right handed defenseman Adams has put on this team that is playing right now.

I wish his drafts were a top 10 issue for me with Adams.

5th worst record in the league by point %. 26 points in 30 games.

Assuming a bare minimum of 90 points to make the playoffs, the Sabres would need to go 32-20 in their remaining 52 games. That means playing at a 0.615 pace. Only the top 10 teams in the league are above that.

Surely Adams is gone after adding an additional 5 seasons without a playoff berth.

The legendary Jim Mora gets the last word.

Adams is the classic example of the dumbest guy in the room who thinks he is the smartest. He dismisses reporters questions with "I know what it takes to win a Stanley Cup", as if being the 12th/13th forward on a cup winning team has anything to do with assembling a cup winning team. Only an ass would think that they were qualified to be in charge of an NHL front office with no prior experience scouting or coaching at the pro level. He is such an embarrassment. I almost never drink but I think I'll crack a beer or two when they send his sorry ass out of here.

I’m sure he knows he can’t do the actual job. But that isn’t the job he was hired to do. He was hired to go in and fire everyone Botterill wouldn’t, save Pegula money, smile and take the heat all of it. His problem is the smile is gone and even the national media is wise to the act now. I think Lindy will be able to get him fired. The unspoken part of the Adams as GM concept is to sell growth and hope. And that’s all over now. For everyone.

Will fix everything
In a bit of hindsight here:

The problems here go back to the decision to "let the kids play" and eschew results for gifting kids playing time in 2021-22. Losing is a cancer, and you have to absolutely kill it before you can start winning. Too much of this team played too many seasons where winning and playing defense didn't matter. I'm not sure how you fix it without throwing MORE season out of the way.

There is a fundamental culture flaw with this team. You have to find it and fix it, no matter what the cost.

Your team has to hate losing. This team expects it.

Not going all out to get into the playoffs in 22-23 when the opportunity was right there was a catastrophic mistake.

If they add 2 NHL quality depth defensemen for, say, 3 total mid-round picks instead of giving Bryson and Casey Fitzgerald a shitload of games, they probably make it. Just insane inaction at the time from Mr. Harborcenter.

Unfortunately, Pegula’s yes man/human meat shield will probably be here for the rest of the year, or at least until the Bills season ends

The biggest issue that goes beyond Adams—and he sucks, and is a symptom/natural conclusion of the problem—is that winning is absolutely not the #1 priority for Pegula. It’s to keep raking in money and slashing expenses at all costs.

Would this team do better with a different GM? Sure, probably. But even that hire would have 1 hand tied behind their back compared to other franchises that *actually* dedicate all the resources necessary to building a winning team and program, to borrow language from the Bills

I will still maintain there was a better path with a lineup full of vet minimum guys who work, make the kids earn a spot, and show them how to be pros than what Adams did.

Here’s a tip for him. You can’t have all the kids. Find everyone under 24 and trade half of them for veterans to insulate the other half. Sounds extreme right? Those are some good talents! Who gives a shit? They’re going to continue to drown together. Pick half. Pay half. Build around that half. That half will be far better for it. The team will be better for it.
