I don’t recall at this point who said what but I thought there was sufficient smoke to convince me he was in on bothChad D has stated that he thinks it was Ehlers that was the player that Adams was close to trading for.
And Adams made it sound like he really wanted to make the trade and it was the other GM that backed out and never traded the player.
So, given both what Adams said and what Chad D has said, the idea that Adams didn't trade for Necas because of the contract situation just doesn't make sense to me.

I do believe that Adams is "in" on a LOT of trade talks.I don’t recall at this point who said what but I thought there was sufficient smoke to convince me he was in on both

In the summer, the Sabres landed veteran winger Jason Zucker by giving him a one-year, $5 million contract. So far, he has been one of their most consistent forwards.
Adams also mentioned the Sabres diligently pursued a trade during the offseason – “We went all in on,” he said – that fell apart.
“You guys probably would’ve roasted me and said we were going to overpay to get that player, and they ended up not trading that player, and he’s still on that team,” he said. “So it’s not from lack of want, but we’re not going to go and just make a trade so you guys can say we’ve spent to the cap, if we don’t think it makes sense for now and into the future. You just can’t operate like that.”
Yeah, I think he’s talking about ehlers, but is also using very loose language hereSabres’ struggles haven’t shaken Kevyn Adams’ belief: ‘Not going to panic’ - Buffalo Hockey Beat
Normally, general managers don’t hold a 23-minute news conference on a Friday morning in early December. But Kevyn Adams’ Sabres are in rough shape.www.buffalohockeybeat.com
That is what I remember Adams saying at the presser.
That doesn't sound like Adams walked away from the trade because of the player's contract situation.
Well, maybe it was Necas, I remember how angry Adams was and that Tulsky seemed to almost accept Adams' offer, but then he probably leaked information about Necas' sale to the press and other offers came in. In the end, the deal fell through. That is what I remember Adams saying at the presser.

Adams has to get that deal done. No excuses.Ehlers was rumored to be worth as much as Eichel, and I don't think Adams was going to pull the trigger. So I think it was Necas. Maybe Quinn + 1st or Savoie + 1st.
Adams can't make another GM trade a guy if he really wants to keep him.Adams has to get that deal done. No excuses.
No, that's not it, rumor has it that GM Canes didn't want to do it at the last minute and decided to hold an auction, so I'm not sure that Adams is to blame here. He is to blame for not finding another player and not paying for him. But in the trade for Necas... It seems like the ball was in Tulsky's court.Adams has to get that deal done. No excuses.
True. I get what you guys are saying. The GM never wanted to trade him. That makes sense.Adams can't make another GM trade a guy if he really wants to keep him.
For the life of me I don’t understand Adams approach with the defense. I get locking in Powers and Dahlin. But the focus should have to surround them with good defensive dmen. If some were big and physical as well, even better. But at bare minimum defensive dmen should have been the focus.
I do believe that Adams is "in" on a LOT of trade talks.
This offseason, sure seems like he was decently along the way for both Ehlers and Necas. But given everything, sure seems to me like he was closer to getting Ehlers than Necas.................and I loathe agreeing with Chad.
If nothing else, it'd be consistent with the Pegula/Adams approach of only wanting guys that want to be here.
he's better than Casey learn to cover each players weakness that's Adams to essentially finish the tradeWhat?
Byram, like Joker before him, has pretty good underlying numbers with Dahlin and terrible ones away from him.
He is terrible defensively but can put up points. But not that many recently.
That wasn't what was going on over the summer. Necas was actively being shopped.Adams can't make another GM trade a guy if he really wants to keep him.
sounds like Adams had no backup in place got played and now we're talking this b.s. he's an idiot that fooked the room w contractsChad D has stated that he thinks it was Ehlers that was the player that Adams was close to trading for.

Not even close, Byram played with Power and it was our worst pairing in many ways. He did nothing to hide Bryson's shortcomings. Even Ruff said today that Byram is far from perfect. Dahlin is another matter, no matter who he plays with, their numbers are going up, we are missing our best defenseman.he's better than Casey learn to cover each players weakness that's Adams to essentially finish the trade
I don’t understand how. Doesn't every player in the league have a full NMC? That’s what I’ve been led to believeColorado unhappy with its goaltending? the GM fixes it in a week.
What its like to have a real GM.
Many years back in the early 80's there was a franchise that was viewed as every bit a basket case laughingstock as the Sabres: The New York Mets. From 1977 when they made the most infamous trade in baseball history (The Midnight Massacre) on they were a bottomfeeder playing in front of a completely empty Shea Stadium. In 1983, they ended up with a chance to acquire Keith Hernandez from defending champs St Louis (and make no mistake: offering him to the Mets was an act of spite by Hertzog and the Cards to Keith) and took it. Keith was absolutely devastated, going to a perennial loser everyone laughed at and wanted no part of it. Frank Cashen convinced him to give it a shot, and he soon realized that playing in NY for the Mets wasn't so bad. Things quickly turned around and a little over 3 years later Keith was mobbing Jesse Orosco on the Shea Stadium mound after the final out of the World Series. You obviously don’t want a bunch of mercenaries counting the days until they can get the hell out of town, but take the chance to acquire some guys and convince them! If you make the playoffs with Necas as an essential part of it, maybe he decides he’ll re-up
orba kozac not jaded giving up , for each lineThis is a big problem. Tage and Tuch sometimes just float. When I watched the game yesterday I couldn't understand why I noticed Kozak, Malenstyn, Benson more often, but I almost didn't see our first line the whole game. Add here the bad Cozens as our 2C, before that there was Quinn with one goal into an empty net, now Peterka with 1+1 in the last 10 games. This is very bad. We need some kind of shake-up in the top 6 and less kids there.
doesn't mean each team hasn't learned to use each playerNot even close, Byram played with Power and it was our worst pairing in many ways. He did nothing to hide Bryson's shortcomings. Wonder if KA talked about Levi with MacFarland ?Colorado unhappy with its goaltending? the GM fixes it in a week.
