Player Discussion Kevin Shattenkirk

Hey if you want to get fired up about Shattenkirk at 3RD for $1M - especially given the hellscape that is RHD in the NHL* - have at it. Maybe there’s some ale out there who punches stuff but I’ll take my chances with Shatty.

*For reference: Connor Clifton got 3 years, $10M
Wow. What an intellectually dishonest argument. You're better than this.

It was Kevin Shattenkirk or Connor Clifton? Those were the options?

How long do you think it would take me to find another RD signed this offseason, for comparable cap hit who had youth/upside, better stats, or real physicality to his game? Or maybe all three?

How long do you think it would take for me to find half a dozen of those guys?

How long do you think it would take me to find a player like this who is still available?

RD Hellscape with one single solitary example of a contract you didn't like... What a godawful argument. You want to make a case that Shattenkirk was the best available option? Let's hear it. But that's embarrassing, man.

Hell baby
Burroughs is basically Clifton with no offense, I think they wanted a different vibe to pair with Forbort (and if somebody like Lohrei squeezes Shattenkirk out then even better)

He was also a 3 year deal and they didn’t give any of those out this off-season. I think they wanted a more temporary stopgap. And if you look at the kind of role Lohrei would play when he first comes up, it’s basically Shattenkirk’s exact role. Easy transition there.

Oh! So you DO realize there were options!

Go ahead. Why is Shattenkirk the best one? Out of your entire list
No no. It’s incumbent on you to look at that list and back up your misplaced vitriol towards me.

And Kyle Burroughs can’t carry Kevin Shattenkirk’s jock. Good lord.

Lohrei isn't competing with Shattenkirk.

Mitchell is! And even he is a better option.

Sure would prefer someone who throws the body a bit though if he's gonna pair with Lohrei. Maybe a vet like Travis Hamonic. 2 years younger than Shattenkirk. $1.1M/yr

Stop stating facts please. We obviously should have given Kyle Burroughs a 3 year deal instead of a one year, zero cap hit if it craters deal to Shatty. You know better.

When you’re campaigning for signing Travis Hamonic for a two year deal you need to stop digging

Doesn’t Hamonic not want to play on the East coast? That’s the entire reason he left the isle iirc

This is exactly what I was saying when the Bertuzzi news hit- you guys can’t look across the league and see what another team offers in terms of finances and assume the bruins could offer the same thing and get the player. Each player has a different set of priorities and circumstances.

Misplaced vitriol?? Excuse me?

I thought the people who DIDN'T like the Shattenkirk signing were the assholes? I've already stated why many times. I've already stated the type or types of players I would have preferred. I've already given you two examples. Burden isn't on ME at this stage.

Where are said players? Burroughs and Hamonic? Really?

Hold on a sec. I thought you could just demote these players for no penalty of they didn't work out. Good enough for your guy but not mine?

I've also stated WHY I prefer them. While you continue with your pithy dismissal and no actual argument.

even if you think Burroughs or Hamonic are better they are certainly not that much of an upgrade on Shattenkirk to be apoplectic about it lol

Especially when they didn’t sign for 1 yr (and Hamonic may not even want to be here geographically…and shit Burroughs may not either, he’s been out west his entire career and is from out there)

And you can cherry-pick different reasons for different things. All I was doing was giving an example in a situation.

Again... Why was Shattenkirk the best option? Why him over everyone else?

1 yr! Cheap! Experience! Offensive ability- can run PP2!

he’s fine for what he’ll be

I'm late on this, but what are you on about?

These are the right shot, right defenders signed since July 1st:

Travis Hamonic - old, not particularly good, $1.1m
Connor Carick - 2 way contract - i.e., not an NHL player
Brady Lyle - not an NHL player
Dylan McIlrath - not an NHL player
Mac Hollowell - not an NHL player
John Klingberg - $4.1m
Shayne Gostisbehere - $4.1m
Luke Schenn - old, geologically slow, $2.8m
Steven Santini - not an NHL player
Radko Gudas - painfully slow, very physical, 3x$3.2m
Brogan Rafferty - not an NHL player
Justin Holl - more like Justin LOL
Scott Mayfield - 7x$3.5m
Brady Keeper - not an NHL player
Kyle Burroughs - only one that might fit your critera, but only 11 career NHL points
Josh Jacobs - not an NHL player
Troy Stecher - 7 points in 20 games before being traded to Arizona, where he didn't amount to much of anything
Erik Johnson - ancient, $3.5m

These are the remaining right shot, right defenders available via UFA:

Matt Dumba - way too expensive
Ethan Bear - not qualified at $2.2m. Maybe he signs for $1m? Maybe? Doesn't have the stats; doesn't have the physicality.
Anton Stalman - enough said
Nicolas Meloche - young and somewhat physical, but couldn't produce in the AHL. Wasn't given a qualifying offer from the Avs. At $750k.
Ryan Merkley - Rumored to be going to Europe. Not an NHL player.
Joshua Maniscalco - wasn't given a QO off his ELC. He's an ECHL player.
Cal Foote - maybe he turns into something, but no QO after 140 NHL games. His father was pretty phycial, though.
Mark Pysyk - he's Canadian and it's confusing spelling his name.
Colin Swoyer - he didn't suck in college. At Michgan Tech.
Seth Barton - not an NHL player
Wyatte Wylie - not an NHL player
Dawson Barteaux - ECHL player
Bode Wilde - awesome name, didn't even look like much in the ECHL or Allsvenskan.
Madison Bowey - not an NHL player
Casey Fitzgerald - Got two playoff games this past spring. Not big, not terribly physical and might not be an NHL player.
Austin Strand - 26 NHL games at age 26.
Andy Welinski - not an NHL player
Andrej Sustr - not an NHL player these days
Jason Demers - one NHL game since 2021

A half dozen, you say?
