Clifton out Shattenkirk in.

Just some bargain basement depth shopping. I really doubt he's any good any more. Takes up a spot until Lohrei's ready.

He had more points this year than Clifton or Gryz, that surprised me

That doesn't surprise me much. He was aways much more of an offensive defenseman than Gryz or Cliff. They both can skate around a good bit, but neither really has any ability to do anything with the puck in the offensive zone

Insurance if a kid doesnt make it or a deal can be had for current D on roster.
He has no roster guarantee. If he performs - great. If not he gets waived to Prov and cap hit basically gonzo.

Insurance + flexibility

What insurance? The kind he's gonna sell once he retires? Shattenkirk's 34 years old. Dude's not the same player he was with the Lightning and the Blues and is showing a decline in his abilities, even when playing for the trash fire that was the Anaheim Ducks last season.

whats the downside?
think it out.

You and I have no idea if a kid is ready. Or if he still has pp value. Of course not the same player. Thats why 1 million.
more importantly is that he can waived without any real cap impact.

Seems like lots of peeps are hating on all these 1 year/$1m contracts Donny handed out today
Signing solid vets at that price is 1000% fine with me if they can get Sway/Freddy signed

Prolly won’t have space for much else after that so welcome to your Centennial Bruins season

The downside is that you waste another year with a first round exit and Lohrei falls behind in development because you spent $1 million on a mid 30s past his prime defenseman that created an unnecessary log jam. All of which, btw, is because the owner of the Bruins is the real life doppelganger of Monty Burns that nickels and dimes the fans and puts his precious playoff gate above having a healthy and stable hockey club. Sometimes, playing the kids is the best option you can do rather than stash them away and letting them rot in the AHL.

I'm not a fan of the signing, but how does it make Lohrei fall behind by a year? If he's ready for the show they won't keep him in Providence for Kevin Shattenkirk's sake.

If anything this keeps them from having to rush Lohrei if he isn't ready

Prospects don't get better by playing in the AHL for their entire careers. They eventually need to play in the NHL. From where I'm sitting, after he played two excellent years at Ohio State, I think Lohrei is ready for the NHL now. Plus he's 22 and I'd rather he go play in the NHL now than wait one to two more years. You may not see that as relevant, but for players coming straight out of college every year counts. It's not like he's 18-19 years old. He should be ready now, given the amount of college players who make the immediate leap to the NHL.

Lohrei is a LD that should be plugged in the top 4. How does a 34yo RD that will be on the 3rd pair stops the kid from showing up?
If anything you can argue that gryz shouldn’t be here by now to make room for the kid or that Forbort should be gone to clear cap space.

But for 3rd pair RD?? The only other option currently on the roster to play there was mitchell who is absolutely atrocious and has no business being the nhl, so they had to sign someone. They went with the cheaper guy they could find because they have no cap space. Its what happens when you go all in.

I don't see what's to be upset about. And I have zero expectations, but it's a lottery ticket. 1% chance he has a resurgence and is very effective. 20% he's alright enough to be a regular 3rd pairing guy. 30% he's a healthy scratch most of the year who provides some leadership and mentorship in the room, 49% chance he's totally washed and they just waive him.

It's like Stralman with a slightly higher ceiling. Easily fungible contract. I don't think he's going to block Zboril or Lohrei's development by being there.

Especially since he's an RD an those two are LD's

He should have taken Tampa’s offer and stayed there instead of going to Anaheim. Wasn’t a good career move. Can probably still run a PP smoothly, he was very good at that. Hope he still has something left and plays well for the Bruins. He’s a good guy. I think he went to Boston College so he’s probably happy coming back. Good luck Kevin!

He isn’t ready for Providence? I assume you watched his games there last year to make such a declaration - what part of his game showed you he’s not an AHL player?
