They currently have the following players on defense:

Werenski - 9.5 million
Severson - 6.25 million
Provorov - 4.725 million
Gudbranson - 4 million
Peeke - 2.75 million
Boqvist - 2.6 million
Bean - 2.33 million

Jiricek should absolutely be on their opening night roster and they have other talented young D pushing for spots. I would imagine they will try to move at least one of if not two of Gudbranson/ Peeke/Bean to free up cap space and make other moves.
Most of us Jackets fans want Jiricek stapled with Svozil in the AHL next season munching 1st pairing minutes. And then have at least Jiricek make the transition to top 4 NHL D the following season.

And then Svozil, Ceulemans and Mateychuk competing the season after.

Which means trades will be made between them an now but I think we're better off making Jiricek force his way into the lineup instead of gifting him a spot.

only three more years seems pretty palatable IMO. If Briere does not get any decent offers best to keep him

For sure - his contract isn't so bad anymore. Put him at C, he'll be good there for at least 2 years if not the entire contract. If you get him at 50%, you can buy him out or just trade him again.

Thanks to Trotz giving away Johansen for nothing the idea of Hayes returning the Flyers a late first round pick at 50% retention is nothing more than a broken pipe dream. I would also say it's massively unlikely that they get a 2nd. Hayes is coming off of a good year and Johansen was bad and hurt so maybe he has more value but at this point a 3rd or 4th is probably the absolute best Briere could do. Thanks a lot no neck.

It’s the risk of waiting. When things are hot, you have to move.

It’s why I’m worried about Briere holding out on Laughton and TK deals (assuming the rumored offers are true) to just ‘squeeze’ an extra pick or two.

Maybe with Laughton but I would disagree on Konecny. Just because you rebuild doesn't mean you trade everyone immediately. I would only trade Konecny right now for an offer I couldn't refuse. If Briere really was offered a late first and future 2nd for Laughton and there isn't a better offer by Wednesday night I would take that and move on.

Hayes getting a first was always a pipe dream.

that wasn’t going to happen.

not many teams had the cap space nd needs were not for him
colorado was one of the few teams who had some interest but the ask was too high.

if Toronto was to trade Matthews they could look at Hayes as a 2C

thr other option to max return would be if flyers and another rebuilding team like Anaheim agreed to retain on each others players to get max return. He passes thru Anaheim down to say $2M per opens things up.

Hayes is a 50 point center and if the Flyers retain 50% and get him down to 3.5 million he is not only valuable but a bargain compared to what players will get on July 1 in a weak UFA crop of centers.
