Rumor: Kevin Hayes to St. Louis gaining steam - rumored to be 'huge' deal involving many players

Has anyone asked why Armstrong didn't bother to check with Krug to waive his NTC before the 11th hour?

I suspect GMs are always active and in trade talks. It may look bad if a certain player with a NTC or NMC is often in trade talks, gets notified each time only for the trade to not happen. Would certainly disgruntle the player after a while.

So I think it makes sense to not tell them until the trade is basically done

Armstrong has said in interviews in the past that he puts the deal together first and then talks to the player about waiving. It's different if a player asks for a trade, like Tarasenko did. But Armstrong wants the deal in place before going to the player if the player isn't expecting it.

He didn't give a reason, as far as I remember. But it seems obvious, there is no point talking to the player if a deal never emmerges. That's just a way to create unneccesssary bad blood.

If Sanhiem isn’t part of the deal, then I want no part of it. He would be a great add for a retool on the defense, Hayes alone makes zero sense.

If its a hayes @ 50% for a late round pick, then why not? We need a Middle 6 C. We can keep him for a year or two and flip him with more retention at a deadline to recoup whatever asset we gave up + more. I don't mind it as long as he is cheap.

If we are still givng up one of our top 4 prospects or a 1st...then we riot.

I doubt the return would still be a late first in a year or two. Id prefer to just draft

Yeah. It makes sense to me as an approach. Put the deal together first, so you're not just alienating a player over a trade that doesn't even end up working out.

But this is also still a pretty awkward situation. Especially being leaked so publicly. It's pretty darn clear that the blues front office do not want Krug there anymore. So he's free to exercise his negotiated trade protection, but how much do you really want to be there when management clearly doesn't want you there?

These NTC GMs hand out like candy, are just fraught with awkward situations all around. They're technically very ironclad...but there are situations like this where a GM can leak things to take away some of that leverage. I'd imagine the refusal to waive is why this whole deal has become so public. Trying to exert pressure on Krug to reconsider waiving. Pretty underhanded thing to do to a guy on a contract that you signed if it's coming from the Blues end...but if you're trying to improve your team...i guess you use whatever you have available to you. Also entirely possible it's coming from the Philly end, because they like this deal better than whatever else is on the table, and want to exert some pressure from the outside to try to make it happen.

Do Blues fans want to get rid of Krug?

He was fine season before this last one, but his contract sucks for what he currently provides and what the team needs. He's always injured and is poor at defending.

If you can shelter him behind stout defense, he's useful on the powerplay, but the Blues are lacking high end defenders and team defense to make that work.
