You think Hughes will open his book before the draft for everyone to read?

I think if the team had any inkling or desire to select Michkov they'd have begun the work on his file weeks ago, not days after the combine ends.

I think if the team had any desire to select Michkov or were intrigued by the possibility, somebody at all close to the team would have put that out there for a fan base that desperately wants to select him.

I think if the league and scouts around it had any thought at all Montreal were interested in Michkov, that that information would float out and be tweeted or articled by someone in the media.

The same people who tell us they have no intention of taking Michkov were the same people telling us they were very high on Slafkovsky and nobody wanted to believe it last year.

Completely different because Wright had peaked. I don’t think anyone was completely sold on him even if a lot wanted him.

What I mean is, the Michkov hype from two years ago may not actually be representative of his ceiling now.

People keep bringing up that he's as good or better than Bedard and I don't think that is a truth you'd see in any NHL scouting circles anymore. That there are other concerns with Michkov that do take place on the ice.

Malkin had to be smuggled out of Russia, but no NHL team was not taking Malkin at 2. They were willing to take that risk and do what was needed to get him out or wait because of the player he is. Doesn't it say something that there will be multiple organizations and scouting staffs willing to take a perceived 'lower upside' prospect?

If NHL teams thought he was as good as this fan base seems to think he is, that risk/reward profile would not feel as scary. Just like it didn't with Malkin.

There's a difference between showing a hand and showing any little bit of interest or desire in taking a player.

It's the same thing. They wouldn't either way. You're really fooling yourself if you think there aren't teams in the top 5-10 who don't have Michkov really high, meaning there's interest, meaning Hughes would definitely drop baits. He would do the same with any other player and baits can come in many forms. Least you forget, Habs will always be looking to hasten their build and no matter who it is in their aim, that pick might end-up elsewhere if the price is right, a huge payoff. To prepare for this, Hughes just can't tip his hand on any prospect at all. It's just the name of the game. I'm pretty sure Hughes had plenty of talks last year over the 1st pick, probably using the hype over Slaf to try to get that bigger payoff, but in the end, their most likely suitor, NJ, relinquished.

Do we know their intentions 100%? No. But do we really think the Habs are all in on the idea of selecting someone they haven't started their due diligence on, when they've known about where they are picking for a month now? They were asked about Michkov literally seconds after their draft positioning was locked in.

That goes for your own negative assesment. Once they interview him, they'll really know and as important as the interviews seem to be for the Habs, any conclusion right now is highly premature, but I'm not the one making those conclusions. I'm theone saying we just don't know.

Everyone around the team keeps telling us, they don't want to take Michkov.

And I'd be extremely shocked if Hughes would let anything leak out, especially for the ridiculous purpose of managing expectations. Molson is the one managing expectations, like he did a few weeks ago when he said the rebuild could take some time.

Everyone around the league keeps saying, there's a really big sense that Michkov is going to slide and they don't know when that slide is going to end.

I don't put any stock into that. Every team is looking to bolster their positions, just like Hughes is. There's no way to tell heads from tale because a boatload of them will send baits.

The fan base clearly wants Michkov due to the hype for years and years on a guy, it's the same situation as Wright last year. But it's probably gonna go the same way here. The more people keep trying to talk themselves into a pretzel to keep hope they'll make the Michkov pick, the bigger the negative reaction is going to be when they pass.

It's far from the same situation as last year. Drafting first vs drafting 5th is much different in trade outlooks. Last year with Wright, they did not tip their hand either and Hughes stated they didn't know who they would pick until the last day.

Managing your own expectations to not get a letdown is the very definition of talking yourself into a pretzel. You instantly take all those reports at face value to manage your own expectations. It's the very same thing.

What I really expect is that Hughes will use all means available to him to bait and entice possible suitors for a big payoff and if he picks a player, you won't actually kniw his list until he picks.

To me, it's not about drafting Michkov or not. It's about knowing if Hughes can really play it close to the chest. I prefer to think he does, herego I take all those reports with a huge grain of salt.

Alright, just don't meltdown with the rest of them when they pass on Michkov for Leonard/Reinbacher.

I told you that to me it's not about drafting Michkov or not, it's about whether Hughes keeps things tight. If it's the opposite, I'll be disappointed.

I'm not the type to meltdown

Also, I forgot to add, what type of baits do you think teams between 5th to 20th or so would give? I'd expect them to majorly downplay Michkov in the hopes he drops.

Dunno Columbus GM seems to be out of control. I like Serverson but 6.25 millions until 36 years old yikkiees. I'd definitely throw a line in the water if i was KH.

GMs with their back against the wall can be dangerous.

Jarmo is running out of time on his own contract, so he's putting all his chips on the line.

It sort of feels like treliving last year.

I agree with your point, but the geopolitical situation during Malkin's youth was alot different than it is now as well. It makes you wonder if its just different enough that it becomes a decisive factor within certain organizations. I don't think it should but maybe.

They had to physically smuggle Malkin out of Russia. I know it's not the same thing, but it wasn't like Malkin walked over here easily.

Lol, Man I will never forget that
In the middle of practice with Mettalurg, he just jumps off the ice
Takes off all his gear
Hops in a car and they get him to a plane

Few days later he's scoring goals on Martin Brodeur lol..

Why not just wait until Michkov comes to Nashville and teams - Habs among them - have a chance to talk face to face with him ?

More spectacular than Malkin. Height of the Cold War, Nordiques smuggle out the Statsny’s out of Czechoslovakia in 1980.

On Friday, August 22, the Nordiques management landed in Austria and checked in to the Europa Tyrol Hotel, a couple blocks from the Holiday Inn hosting the team. …

Sunday’s game would be one last hurrah for the Stastny line … Peter’s heavily pregnant wife, Darina, moved all their bags into a red Mercedes driven by an anonymous man (often called 007 because his name has not been made public). When the game ended at 11 pm, the brothers had some drinks and dinner with teammates. At 12:15 am, the brothers bid each other farewell as Peter and Anton left Marian at the bus (scheduled to leave at 1), got into the Mercedes, and drove six hours to Vienna. Peter later admitted, “[Those were] the scariest moments of my life. It was like being part of a John le Carré novel.”

Meanwhile, Lèger and Aubut had arrived at Vienna and informed the Canadian Embassy of the impending arrival and need for asylum and documentation. The Stastny family arrived at 6 am and tried to rest in Aubut’s suite at the Intercontinental Hotel. Unfortunately, the Nordiques representatives were recognized by Czechoslovakian security personnel and had to hightail it to the embassy at 10 Dr. Karl Leuvering Strasse. There, a woman named Schallgruber took charge. When she noticed a car from the Czechoslovak Embassy outside, she asked whether Lèger had protection. She then arranged for the Austrian police to escort them back to the hotel. The Stastny defectors were alarmed to see Schallgruber and the police when they opened the door to the suite. The Czechoslovakians tried calling the brothers to threaten them into staying, but Schallgruber answered and hung up. Under police escort, the group raced back to the Canadian Embassy and then to the airport. The whole time Aubut worried, “We are going to lose everything without a perfect operation.”

Peter is one of the few players on this planet who would have read John Le Carré.

What if Leonard becomes a 60-70 points player but we win a cup with him on the team? Would you be happy?

Are you telling me that if we get a 100 point player instead of a 65pts player we wouldn’t win the cup with that same team.

Hard to believe .

Any news on the RHP front?
What kind of contract is his agent asking for?
Haven't heard a thing yet...........you guys?
