Having other bad teams pass on a guy doesn't mean much. New Jersey and Arizona aren't exactly well run franchises just now, and NJ is set at center. I hope by next year I have confidence in the habs scouting department, because right now I have no idea if the guys making the decisions have any clue or not.

Slaf may be way more effective on small ice or he may not be able to beat NHL D and G. Wright may have peaked or he may go back to being generational once he is away from Kingston.
That the thing it is a coin flip, if either bust or make it we will have arguments to back up both position that it was the right or wrong pick.

There is some randomness but it's not a coin flip. Hughes and his teams have to control what they can control and hope the other stuff works out. We'll see how well they project these guys. Individual failures don't necessarily mean they did anything wrong, but consistent failure sends a message, like the habs in a whole series of drafts.

What we do know is that most whiners on this board would been hyped beyond belief only for every player to bust.

Have to trust the scouts on Slaf. 3 teams passing on Wright makes me comfortable he wasnt the right guy.

Dach is a homerun attempt. Dont forget Gorton stole Zibanejad for NYR. Dach only cost Romanov. You can replace what Romanov brings by signing Chiarot/Edmundson types and every year there are some available.

I still feel like theyre fully commited to tank/rebuild. Hopefully at least one of Petry/Anderson is gone soon.

Not sure how everybody is getting their panties in a bunch already while I’ve spent years witnessing people defend f***ing Marc Bergevin.
This is a good post .My panties were definitely in a bunch last night but I can atleast see a vision here which is not something we saw with MB . The biggest thing is development though . Let’s see how that goes .

I think a Petry/Anderson trade will be signs of that. But they're not traded yet

Okay so with this first perceived fork in the rug, my take on HuGo is this:

I think they're good at managing and constructing a development team and hockey ops as a whole. I thought Hughes was a good negociator, but now I'm gonna need to see more because in all likelyhood he got fleeced with Dach in terms of perceived value in the moment the trade was done, but also got great value for Romanov in the first trade.

But... is prospect evaluation their achille's heel?

Here's hoping they boot out Lapointe and bring in Madden in the next few weeks.

This is totally a Lapointe draft.

I think they were sort of stuck with him due to the mid-season hiring of HUGO but I expect him to be gone at the end of the season.

Can he take Bobrov with him?

Here
Nick Bobrov will kill the gurus here. This is a Hugo Bobrov draft, they decided that Lapointe was worthy. If this thing proves to be successful, and I absolutely wish it happens, we’ll be in good hands. Otherwise it’s just a recycling cycle of scouts that got the boot elsewhere for bringing very little.

The NYR amateur drafting sucked and we all know it. Maybe they got better this season.

Love the Hutson pick, don’t love the rest. Having the 1st OA and another first to only be excited about a second rounder feels very bad. I am fully aware that it’s my problem though.

The honeymoon is most definitely over as I don't think there will be much forgiveness if things don't turn out well down the road. I think we just made a couple big blunders, hopefully I'm wrong. Regardless at this point there's not much to do but cheer for Slaf and Dach to develop into impact players so that's what I'll do.

It sure seems like it. A lot of the draft went against what HUGO stand for.

It was exactly like a Bergevin draft.
The thing is I'm pretty sure Bergevin would have gone with Wright with an off chance of Cooley as he always talked about the only way to get centers is by drafting high.

He also had an obsession with size though (Tinordi, McCarron, Kassian, Bourque)

So where are all the people who claimed to know everything about who the pick would be? “Slaf is garbage blah blah blah” “Wright is literally better in every aspect of the game” thank god y’all don’t work for the team

That’s the feeling I get. May not be good at drafting or win every trade but maybe they end up being good at putting a team together.
Real curious how next week turns out.

Report is that Lapointe isn't going anywhere. Seems that he has great chemistry with people in place. Remains to be seen.

Well, I'm not disappointed about Slakofsky. He has a chance to become a decent player. IMO not a superstar, but a solid winger who can reach 50-60 pts.
I'm disappointed with Dach as someome who can try to fix the gaping hole on C.

Ofc, if Slaf busts and proves to be another Kakko, that means that Gorton & Hughes are busts too.
that would be awful. a solid winger. He better be the best player in the draft, or at least top 5, I don’t think he ends up top 5 If he’s a 50-60 point winger.
