I'm trying to find an upside. It's not Pierre Mcguire? Can we celebrate that? What are the odds anybody asks some real questions about how ridiculous, lazy, nepotistic this is at the press conference?

The upside is that Jones isn't actually going to be tasked with any serious responsibilities, so he's not going to have any chance to ruin things himself.

The downside is that we hired a President of Hockey Ops who has zero serious responsibilities.

Perhaps Jones is the best that they could get since no one else of quality wanted to work with Briere, Torts and Flahr?

I don’t think it’s necessarily an indictment on those guys. Hockey is a good old boys network right or wrong. Comcast just created a job that nobody really wanted. It’s not a usual President role. It’s essentially a PR mascot role. Guys like Jones & Eddie O this is probably the best they could do outside out their tv roles.

If you wanted influence &/or a job with plausible upward track trajectory this wasn’t the job for you which likely eliminated a good bit of candidates.

If they're already decided on their long-term strategy, and Briere is going to be GM, what exactly would a President of Ops do? Reverse what's already been decided?

This is a nothing burger, b/c the President is a nothing job right now.

The people bitching are the ones who wanted a new President to demote Briere and fire Torts.
Of course, the probability of that happening was zero.

It should not be too much to ask for an ostensibly professional organization to have an org chart that makes sense. The President of Hockey Operations should, by any rational understanding of what those words mean, be the person with the ultimate responsibility to decide who is employed in hockey operations. Whether he wants Brière and Tortorella around or not is immaterial to the most basic objection here: if he can't fire the people who ostensibly report to him, then he isn't President of Hockey Operations, he's a press secretary. Either call the position Press Secretary, have him report to Danny, and give Danny the dual title he functionally has anyway, or give the President of Hockey Operations the capacity to preside over hockey operations.

THINGS NOT MAKING SENSE IS NOT A POSITIVE! I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE THIS ANY CLEARER!

This looks bad to the point it’s comical but I’ve no other choice than patiently wait and hope Briere does an honest to god ground up rebuild. No reason to get all bent out of shape. They aren’t worth it. If it’s par the course I just won’t watch again this year. I either get more free time or the Flyers move in the right direction. Win-win

Titles mean nothing, see how many companies have numerous Vice Presidents who are glorified middle managers.

As I pointed out, Colorado did the exact same thing with Sakic, gave him total control after two years as an advisor, first as assistant President then as GM. The GM his first year had no authority over personnel. Titles don't matter, only authority. And that is granted by the "boss," in this case Hilferty.

Why have a President of Ops? I think Jones is a placeholder, keeping the seat warm if things don't work out with Briere/Torts, Hilferty might bring in a real President and give him the authority to hire a GM and HC. But that won't happen for 3 more years.

In the end it doesn't matter, you can hire a President who looks good on paper but screws up everything (like half the franchises in the NHL), or maybe Briere is the real thing and after he rebuilds the Flyers, moves up to President and hires a GM who is basically his lackey.

In either case, you usually don't know for a few years (occassionally someone implodes their first year, like the GM who followed Fletcher in Minn, but that's rare).

Context matters. Obviously, in that case PHOPs has been defined as a pure communications and PR job. Keith Jones fits that bill.
However, they still missed out on an opportunity to bring in someone with an unbiased outside perspective and that's a mistake.
