But is he in Sullivan's eyes? I want him to be, but I doubt it. We'll end up with Dominik-Single-Digit-Goals-Simon getting those minutes.

Kapenen won't fit well with Sid.

Kap is going on Geno's RW.

which means Rust is probably traded. in which we'll get burned and it'll make this trade even worse, becuase we're gonna trade Rust, who's way better than Kap, to fit Kap into the top 6.

No. 15th overall is a huge pick in one of the deepest drafts we’ve seen recently. Think more like a Brandon Saad at 15th overall.

And Kapanen is more of the same, speedy 30-40 pt winger that has tunnel vision and PKs.

Brandon Saad would be nice, but that's Brandon Saad 3-4 years from now when this prospect is ready. Will that player even matter at that point? Crosby and Malkin probably have about that many years left of being elite players, so why not try to do what we can now to win with those years?

We all know the bottom is going to fall out on us in a few years. It's inevitable. At that point, we can start looking to the future again. But I'm OK with a win now approach. I really am.

The question of course then becomes whether like @Soggy Biscuit mentioned KK is the antidote to some of the problems we've had. We'll have to see how he fits.

KK brings a lot of what this team needs and will definitely help them.

For the 15th overall and a promising prospect... I dunno.

I’m trying to process this and offer a rational take, but I’m annoyed right now TBTH.

KK brings a lot to the table and this board will love him, then hate him, love, hate.. thrill, frustrate.

If you say so, I trust you, but I look at this team and see an urgent need for puck moving on the blue line, some more reliable goal scoring, more physicality, and people who gel with elite players. It'll be the latter that controls his fate here but his record in Toronto that isn't promising.

Another streaky speedster seems like oil to Texas. Am I missing something here?

I mean... I GUESS at least Dubas didn't find a way to unload Ceci on JR. Yet.

So there's my silver lining.

I dunno guys. Taken along with the last couple of years-worth of trades, especially... this just feels really dumb and pointless. Like someone just said this seems like the kinda deal that necessitates two or three other trades to get the lineup even balanced precariously.

am i right in thinking that hallanders star was fading a bit? not to justify what seems like a severely lacking in imagination sort of forced trade.

Didn't he break his leg or something and then came back and put up 14 points in 27 games. He just turned 20 at the end of June. Adding him is a massive L for JR and the Pens. He was easily a top-3 prospect in our pool.

No it doesn't?

The lineup we'll probably see is:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Malkin-Kapanen
McCann-3C-Hornqvist

Except he's not going to be 3RW and you know this. He will slot in on Malkin or Sid's RW. He is brought in to be a Top 6 wing, a position which is very capable of doing.

Kahun is not better than Kapanen. Come on now. Just stop.

Okay...who?

Only reason to think Kap is better than Kahun is because of his draft Position.

Nothing in the stats would suggest Kap is better.

We do know that Kahun is going to be good, and we trwded him for nothing. while we give up a 15th and Hallander for Kapenen.

So we trade Kahun, who's better than Kap, for scraps.

But give up a ton for Kapenen.

Just terrible asset management

You can blame Sullivan for that. He destroyed Kahun by healthy scratching him, and playing him on 4th line before being traded away for tripping hobbit. Not sure what Kahun did to piss off Sulli, but I can see same happening with Kap. Then he will get traded for some X penguin again. Although Kap is technically X penguin as well, so JR is ahead of schedule lol.

It's unfathomable to me that we dealt the best pick we've had in a decade for a guy that'll probably end up on the 3rd line sooner than later. A year before we lose our 1st to Minny for the Zucker deal.

Good lord, man. I'm the president of the "JR's a f***ing moron and has driven this team into the dirt in recent years" club, but even I didn't think he was this stupid.

Lol 2 of those assets were nothing.

JR overpaid, but saying "he gave up 4 assets" is dumb. Just say "he gave up a 1st and good prospect".
this. i genuinely don't care that he included Rodrigues and Warsofsky. you can sign league minimum guys any offseason to fill the same roles just as effectively.

Oh f*** off. You have Crosby and Malkin at an elite level for a few more years, you take advantage of that as much as you can. f***ing go for it.

Did you see how Malkin played this postseason? He was a ghost.

They're in their mid-30's. If they were nearing 30, I'd be on that boat. Now? Nope.

Most rank him #4, which means he’d be like 7th or 8th in most teams rankings. Not saying it was wise to deal him but yea.

I also think this trade may indicate that McCann is on the outs, because the idea of keeping McCann when your top-6 is that set doesn't make much sense. You can likely recover some of those futures you just gave up for Kapanen, definitely not on the level JR paid but you can at least get some of them back.

Kahun was on Malkin’s wing when he was traded.

Cool, time to get get more comfortably numb then.

You're off base. You *hope* 15OA is Dylan Larkin or Erik Karlsson.

You're thinking if you pick right its JT Miller or Pulock or Brannstrom.

You accept that if it's a bit meh it's going to be someone like Kapanen.

Kapanen's got a fair bit to do to get up to Miller.

In three to four years, though. In three to four years Crosby and Malkin are probably just about done as elite players, and this core is about done as a contender. That 15th OA could turn into a young Erik Karlsson at that point and it wouldn't even matter, would it?

I'm fine with an approach of win now, deal with the fallout later. We all know the bottom is going to fall out on this team and that the end is not far off. But I'm fine with going for one last cup with this core while we still can.

I believe the Leafs won this trade, BUT having said that, I can actually see Kap on Crosbys line, lighting it up. I think they could mesh well. Kap is a good player, very fast, a very good third line winger, but Crosby makes his linemates better and with Kaps speed i think you might have something there.

Thats what I'm thinking Rutherford is thinking. And I'm a leafs fan, but I think this may work out for you guys. Wishing you guys luck.
