Thats why I don't expect it to happen because it already happened once

Some players treat their NHL job like a real job. They like where they work and want to keep working there. There as some players that don't feel the need to prove with their salary that they are better than others. Alzner's style of play and humility would indicate he's not like that.

He's not a defense first defenseman because he cant skate the puck and cant shoot the puck. He just would rather play a lesser game.

So, I expect that he is fairly easily satisfied. He is the kind of player that stays with the organEYEzation after his playing days are over.

No way Alzner leaves DC. The Caps will find a way to get rid of Orpik if it comes to that. Alzner will get the $5M that he deserves. Kuznetsov will get a $7M contract and the Caps will likely keep Oshie over Williams.

Yup... Look at Methot, Dekeyser, E Johnson... He's just as good defensively but he's the better passer. He has an incredible first pass

So a range of 6M-7M is more than realistic for Alzner

5.5-5.9 is smart money.

6-6.25M is bidding war money

After that you're pissing money away, and that's no offense to Alzner either.

Agreed and I think Benning is among them

Indeed. I'm sure Benning would be lined up among those ready to hand Alzner bags of money if he hits the market. He might even mention it before Alzner officially hits the market. ;) :D:D:D

Depending on just how big the money and how insane the term got, bringing Alzner back home to BC might not even be the worst thing in the world either. Especially as it would subsequently allow them to move Edler somewhere else for futures without really missing a beat.

But i'm sure the Caps will be doing everything they can to keep him in the fold. And even if he does hit the open market, he'll probably have teams among that lineup who can offer a more competitive team situation at that point, in addition to the money.

If he signs in WSH I see him having a 4.5 AAV, if he goes somewhere else probably around 5.5-6.5.

I know the Leafs have holes are their but to go chasing after UFAs isn't the best decision.

Next year.

LHD...Rielly, Gardiner, Marincin, Valiev and Dermot
RHD... Zaitsev, Carrick....then it's a reach
Just don't think Alzner is needed.

Leafs could probably trade some of their young ELC forwards to a team that will lose a good 4th Dman in the expansion draft.

Easily the top defense in the NHL -- no room for improvement.

Alzner is going no where. He is one of the most respected players on the team and is part of their core. He'll resign in Washington and be a key part of the blue line for a long time. I'll say 6x5.25.

Ideally, you're looking at a future Caps defensive corps of:

Alzner-Carlson
Johansen-Niskanen
Siegenthaler-Bowey

I'm not sure what Alzner will end up getting, but both Dekeyser and Johnson are more productive than Alzner offensively.

Especially EJ who twice has a career high of 39 points, and also had 12 goals and 23 points in 47 games a couple seasons ago, where it looked like he was on his way to 20 goals and a 40+ point season, before ending his season with an injury.

Alzner's career highs are 5 goals, and twice 21 points. Both in 82 games.

I'm a Capitals fan, and 7 million for Alzner would be a horrendous deal for anything more than 3 or 4 years.

Depends how Alzner is feeling.

A top 3 defenseman
Probably top 60 making him top pairing.

If he wants to go cheap deal as low as 5 but as high as 6.5

The Caps love him, and will let something pretty valuable go from the roster if it becomes a cap room issue. Alzner is worth shedding most any player to retain.

It's always difficult pegging the contract value of purely defensive defensemen, even those with good mobility like Alzner. Their compensation always seems to come in under the estimates. I'd be happy with long term and a heavy cap hit, though, and I imagine most Caps fans would too. Alzner is a gem.

EJ is significantly better offensively than Alzner.

I've never said the opposite... only passing on Alzner

Alzner has a horrendous shot and needs to improve his skating significantly, the reason why he doesnt get any PP time in WAS (and Carlson & Niskanen)

Not going to disagree about the shot being a weak point of his game, but his skating is very good. Certainly not a speed demon in terms of straight line speed but he rarely gets beat and is rarely caught out of position.

Also, even if Alzner was better offensively, he probably wouldn't sniff the PP because Washington's very rigid PP structure pretty much requires a right shot at the point. Orlov is a very good offensive defenseman, for example, but he gets little to no PP time because he is a lefty.

I'm uncomfortable with Alzner getting north of $6M a year due to his offensive limitations but unless Orlov really breaks out this season defensively, the Capitals will almost be forced to pay Alzner what he wants because they lack anyone else who can play first pairing minutes on the left side. I agree with others that Alzner seems like the type that will likely sign a team-friendly deal even as a UFA, but if he decides to use the leverage he has he can probably squeeze Washington for $6M+.

One thing I think a lot of people are forgetting is the character of person Alzner is. He took a ton less than he was worth his last contract. He loves playing in DC and I suspect given his love of the organization and his best friend being on the blueline with him that he may do so again. Alzner is the ultimate team guy and has never been about the money. There's a reason people consider it one of the best contracts in the NHL, because it is and because he wanted it that way.

That's not saying he won't get a raise, cause he most certainly will but don't be surprised to be calling his next contract one of the best in the NHL again.

Edit: This is an article when he signed his last deal. https://www.nhl.com/news/capitals-alzner-glad-to-have-security-of-contract/c-677566 He's probably not going anywhere.

No because Columbus didn't give him that contract we did but Washington can't say "hey we didn't pay Orpik."

They set that market
Agents are fairly smart people, I would imagine. As such, I think they'd be bright enough to look at other comps throughout the league and not solely one outlier just because it happened to be offered by the same organization.
