Obviously when you look at the D men that are set to hit the UFA market Kevin Shattenkirk is the headliner along with Brent Burns, but another guy I think will get A LOT of attention is Karl Alzner, I think if he hits free agency teams will be all overvhim.

I think teams like Calgary Toronto Edmonton Buffalo Bostond the Ranagers and Wings would all show huge interest in the guy as he would fill a big hole on all those teams.

Thats just off the top of my head I think he would get A LOT of interest I just wonder if he gets more many than Orpik.

What do you think?

I hope the Avs come calling if he hits FA, he would be a perfect compliment to either EJ or Barrie.

Hopefully we'll get a better idea of what we have in Bigras and Zadorov this season and can make a truly informed decision if/when the time comes.

He'll get $5M/6years

He's worth more. But extremely underrated. But also a pure defensive defensemen. Which dont usually push the upper echelon of Dmen contracts.

I was looking forward to him hitting FA because he would be the perfect partner for Subban :(

I'm going to guess 5.75M

In a perfect world we get Rielly a RHD partner, but top pairing defenseman are hard to find, I'd be okay with Rielly moving to RD if it meant we got to add Alzner.

Although I imagine the Caps have every intention of keeping him.

The Caps LD depth as of now is Alzner, Orpik, and Orlov. I would be shocked if Alzner hit FA given Orpik's, ummm, declining play and management's apparent distrust of Orlov's style. He doesn't seem like the kind of personality that would push for a crazy contract, plus pure defensive D are generally paid much lower. I'd be happy with a long-term deal in the $4.5M range, but would go higher given the lack of options.

Do you mean get Rielly a right handed d man. The way you said that was pretty confusing

If he signed in Toronto I would like to see him with Gardiner

Reilly-?

Alzner-Gardiner

I think we need 2 guys to fill out the top 4

You think he gets 7+? I don't sew that he doesn't have the offensive game for that

its not like suter was an offensive force before he signed that contract. He was just respectable, and im going moreso off of the minutes alzner has been playing and the fact there will be a new team in FA this year, and teams overpay all the time in free agency.

Lack of coffee...corrected.

No...because Gardiner is a LD, not gonna just stick him on RD after he's never played there. Rielly has at least played RD.

If Zaitsev pans out...

Alzner-Rielly
Gardiner-Zaitsev

BUT, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Zaitsev needs to pan out and Alzner needs to hit UFA and THEN we actually need to sign him. I think Washington will be able to retain Alzner...it just might get tight.

I think Oshie, Kuznetsov and Alzner all require new contracts?

i mean ya suter had a few 40 point seasons, but has never scored more than 8 goals. He had weber giving him assists.

Probably a good candidate for 5-5.25mil per season, he just doesn't have the offensive game to push much further than that.

Would like to have him on the Avs, but there's some serious question marks on if we could afford him long term with Bigras and Zads. As well as Beauch for one more year.

Unfortunately being a more defensive defensemen doesn't payoff as much if you don't have that offensive upside. 5.5m-5.8m per is my guess

Alzner is always solid and steady. I never worry when Alzner is on the ice , he's strong and not a penalty prone.

solid

Any team landing him would be lucky. I just don't know if the Caps will have the money for him. Love Opik but his contract is a becoming a problem.

(btw - I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Toronto - Babcock has said some complimentary things about him)

I'd pay for the sure thing because no guarantee Bigras or Zadorov ever become what Alzner IS.

Orpik will likely be gone by next offseason IMO (either via trade or buyout). The Capitals have too many free agents to sign for him to still be on the roster unless the salary cap takes a massively unexpected jump. Kuznetsov, Burakovsky, and Alzner will be priorities to re-sign and they will all command significant raises. Oshie and Williams will likely only be re-signed if there is space and mutual interest.

I'd guess Alzner would come in right around 5 years, $25.0M ($5.0M AAV). Nicklas Hjalmarsson (5 years, $4.45M AAV) and Chris Tanev (5 years, $4.1M AAV) are two strong comparables. I'd guess he comes in a little higher than both just because the salary cap is a little higher.
