Player Discussion Kaiden Guhle

I was one of them. I thought that guy was done.

Wrong!
These kind of assessments should be left to the pros.

GTFO with your "if you were".

He lost a step and Subban was the one carrying the puck. I know full well Markov's smarts helped, but he did lose a step and Subban helped in that regard.
Yop ! i remember Subban carrying the puck to the centre of the ice, then going back to his zone, then returning to the centre of the rink to pass the puck to one of the 4 players waiting at the blue line....I used to like Subban until he started to do his me, myself and I show.

Guhle injury could be blessing in disguise. Last year we lost Dach and it got us Demidov. This may get us Desnoyers or Mrtka.
Honestly, you're not wrong. This is the kind of beauty of rebuilding. This season has helped develop some good experience in meaningful games for our young roster, and we've won plenty of them. Guhle will be back

We currently draft 13th, but only 3 points from drafting 7th.

I don't know what your GTFO is all about. I'm not fortunate enough to have season tickets, or to afford going to 'Live' games all that often, but I've been blessed to have friends take me to a few games at the Bell Centre and the first thing I did when I went was focus on a player for entire shifts -- one per period.

I've done so with Markov and, honestly, he was a complete D, with smarts both offensively and defensively, able to use his positioning to his advantage and his anticipation to make up for lost speed.

Defensively, he was a beast around the net and able to box out opponents.

I'm just saying that you can't fully appreciate a player with camera angles and focus on the puck carrier on TV.

Subban carrying the puck was more about the way Subban plays than Markov having lost a step.

Subban's showmanship antics left four team mates static at the blue line. Markov might have been slower than Subban (who, BTW, wasn't that quick, but really strong to protect the puck and muscle his way past an opponent), but he could really pass the puck and would have better used his team mates on the fly to keep the play moving forward into the O-zone.

I understand you might be a fan of Subban (as I was), but you have to be able to recognize the good and the bad from his play.

Subban was unable to adjust his game as he grew older the way Markov did.

Let's also not ignore Markov had lost a step, which Subban compensated for.
He did lose a step........but he was such a smart player......Markov / Subban were an amazing duo.

I loved Subban.........but he was no Markov.....both amazing players, but man Markov was The General of their Offense.

Montreal is a 5-game losing streak (no loser points) away from being in the mix for a lottery win (that's only three more regulation losses away.

It doesn't take away from the awesome play they have put up on the season stretch that has historically destroyed this team's aspirations.

Losing Guhle will hurt us long term, but could give us a boost in effort for the short term, further giving the illusion that we could still make the playoffs.

However, long term, on a D that lacks high end depth, Guhle's absence for the rest of the season and beyond (as per DeepDeek)😉 will impact negatively our hopes of making the playoffs.

Hughes needs to recognize that and use the absence of Guhle to make the players accept that the trade deadline will be the time to move veteran players that won't be part of the Habs when they are finally in the playoff mix, year after year.

Dvorak will be gone by season's end, even if not at the trade deadline since it isn't certain that any team will make a move for Dvorak, even at 50%.

Armia would certainly interest a team looking for strong forechecking, PK prowess and puck protection during the playoffs.

Savard seems to be of interest for a team looking for defensive depth on the right side (rumours mention Edmonton), but the return likely won't be that high, IMO (not even a 2nd rounder), and, with Guhle out, Hughes might ride out Savard's contract and cut ties with the veteran during the offseason, depending on what transpires after the season and whether Hughes acquires another veteran or NHL-ready righty at that time?

Matheson won't be moved at this deadline because he eats up so many difficult minutes and replacing such a D, especially with Guhle out indefinitely, is extremely hard to do.

That leaves Evans as a potential trade asset.

IMO, of the players that could get moved at this deadline, given his career season so far and the fact that, age-wise, he is currently in his prime, Evans would be worth a valuable 1st round pick (even if that ends up being a late round pick).

Still, considering that Evans would likely still be good for another 6 years or so, if he avoids another wonky, Hughes might consider re-signing him as a depth C that could be elite on the 4th line and replace an injured #C if necessary.

Even if Dach were to confirm that he can occupy the 2C position (yet to happen, outside of some flashes), what would be the NHL-ready C-depth on the Habs with both Dvorak and Evans gone next season?

It's uncertain whether Beck or Kapanen would be ready next season? There's always Newhook who could be a serviceable, but not ideal, option as 3C. Considering he likely gets bumped off the 2nd line with Demidov's arrival, that could be a likely option.

If the goal was making the playoffs, rather than progressing OA as a team, I'd opt for re-signing Evans as a 4th line C option that can cover for the 3C position if necessary:

Suzuki
Dach
Newhook
Evans

If the goal is giving a chance to a young C and letting Kapanen and Beck battle it out, or a pick at the 2025 draft, if we end up selecting top-10 and land a promising C like Desnoyers (if not a lottery treasure like Misa or Hagens), I nab the extra first round pick by moving Evans:

Suzuki
Dach
Newhook
Beck/Kapanen/Desnoyers

Don’t feel bad. I asked it about conflict resolution and it told me to get a flamethrower. (Just kidding)

AI hasn’t fully evolved yet.

Yeah they'll have him doing very little for 4-6 weeks just while the surgically repaired area heals. That's before any kind of rehab can even start. This is a multiple months situation unfortunately.

Sucks for our boy hes a great piece of the puzzle, but it's time to see what Jayden Struble can step up and be.

To be fair they'd both lost a step and that pairing was hard to watch when trying to skate the puck 200ft.
We didn't use the drop pass to a forward but probably should have. They were Dynamite when they got set up though.

I had one, I don't think you could. That was on the Atari 5200 :(
Yeah. We were the last people in the street to have a VCR. Forget about an Atari. I got one when I had a paper route and by then people had a Colecovision. So I bought one of those just before they stopped making stuff and bought the ADAM computer that came with it.

Good times
