Yes. Most likely a 1-year deal, but a 3-year deal could also be possible.
Yeah I’d say a 1 year for under 3mil or more term and more money. If he finishes the season and playoffs very strong I can see them offering 5mil (or more) x 7yrs. Kakko might want to bet more heavily on himself with the 1 year though.
I dont think they do a 3 year because that would end with him being UFA at 26 years old… I think it will either be 1 or long term.

He has 2 years left to reach UFA status. Typically, teams try to buy at least 1 UFA year. I can't see Kakko locking himself into anything more than a 3-year deal unless it comes with certain guarantees.

He needs PP time if he's going to realize his full earnings potential. If he can't get that here, he'll go elsewhere.

Yup. That’s why he’d be UFA at 26. He might like that, but I don’t think the team will do it. Thats why I think either 1 year or long term, with 1 year being FAR more likely.

I think at this point view him as a low cost middle six guy who maybe still has the potential to be more, but you could invest some money in to solidify that middle of the lineup and hope he does end up breaking out. Not worth trading him unless some other team overvalues him enough to pay for him like he has performed better.

Which in all is a bummer for #2 overall but doesn't mean he isn't a useful player and it's not worth ditching useful players just because they didn't live up to their draft billing. He still fulfills a role in the lineup, and yeah who knows, maybe he'll give us more some day

Ive been hard on Kakko (and many of the kids at points) but they all are finding their roles. I never liked the poor player development narrative. Look back at the players we took during the rebuild and many have become lineup regulars with more on the way. To outsiders Kakko looks like a bust but to me I see him filling a role we have been searching since Fast left. No necessarily the chem with Panarin but a guy who makes things happen in the NZ and below the goal line at even strength. Plus he can play a little mean on the ice with Cuylle. I want to see Kakko play with the Scandinavian edge more. Im starting to see it more consistently

He finally has guys to play his game with. It may have never been fair to assume he was going to be a monster offensive player because he was never the dynamic skater to be that guy. However, he can be a great 30-30 guy with the right players and situation. I don't think the Rangers are looking to trade him, but I am sure they are listening to offers in the hopes they can improve the team. If they trade him in the offseason, it won't be for throw-away prices. If they keep him, his contract demands will not be excessive because he doesn't have the numbers to make that demand. I assume there is another short deal on the horizon with the hopes on a coming break out. Kakko should bet on himself with another "show me" deal and work to cash in. Regardless, this is the kind of 3rd line depth real contenders need. An upgrade at 3C would be ideal, but not for a crazy cost considering what they have is working and producing.

Night and day before and after the injury. Almost like the rehab time gave him a chance to reset his training. This looks more like a continuation of last year, which was an upward trajectory.

Also he and Cuylle are ferocious on the forecheck and possession. I love Brod and how hard he’s played, but you keep thinking about how getting them a better center would completely unlock that line. It’s a shame Chytil got injured because they’d really be cooking.

Yeah that f*cked everything up as I feel troch would have been the key to that. Chytil looked damn good in between Laf and bread. Ugghhh

If they replace Brod, it needs to be someone that carries the puck into the zone. Cuylle and Kakko need someone to do zone entries for them. I think that is the thing that is helping Brod work with them. He gives them the piece they are missing. The upgrade needs to do that otherwise it probably won't work.
