Can they send Kakko to Hartford for a game or 2 on a conditioning assignment to get his legs under him before putting him back in the lineup? Feel like that used to be a thing, but can’t remember the last time it happened

Kakko is a complete failure and loser. There is no benefit from him, just like getting milk from a billy goat.

Kakko will figure it out. The question is, will the Rangers be patient enough to let it happen. Look at the guy we're playing tonight (JT). This fanbase couldn't wait to help him off the platform and onto the train out of town.

Now, he's probably in the conversation of best center the Rangers have drafted in the last 30 years.

JT always had some good offensive skills and instincts. Kakko looks lost offensively. Everything with him is too the outside and he just no concept of how to break down a defense for high danger chances. He could be a good defensive grinder. That can be a useful player but JT Miller is not a good comparison.

Yes they can. Not sure if they need his permission though (I would think so?), but no waivers.

It normally isn't done often though.

The point of the comparison wasn't production, it was about giving up on players too early.

I realize that a large faction of the fanbase has given up on a 22 (almost 23) year old second overall pick. And that's dumber than us who defend him by a large margin. He's so young. And Miller was a headcase who clearly was f*cking up the room, not one player gave a shit that he was out. Kak is a sweetie who is clearly beloved by his teammates. He lightens the room and he's a gamer who takes L's hard at such a young age. And has playoff experience with this club which has put him in that 'young vet' category.

It cannot be debated, if he struggles to figure it out and hovers where he's been hovering, he's still a useful player with major upside at ~3mil with the cap going up.

So, it's doubly dumb to want him off this team 'coz points and second overall and look at Hughes'.

I was never worried about Laf and I have never carried doubt about Kak.

We need to bet on these kids, not against them. We invested a ton in them and we need to see it through. Bread and Troch getting shut down every playoffs at some point is a greater concern for me when I look at what this team is missing to get to the top.

Decent chance Kakko becomes a nothing more than a bigger, soft version of Fast. But you know what? We kinda need that. The overall team defense has suffered in his absence

I know there are varying opinions about Kakko and what he could top out at.

And yes, he had a very underwhelming start to the season production wise, no doubt. He looked kinda lost at times.

But he has a solidifying effect on the team as a whole 5 on 5 and IMO will be a nice shot in the arm right now. The past few weeks the Rangers have had trouble defensively and being precise with the execution of the system.

It would be really nice for him and the team if he came out and got a few goals in the first week back, but I'm not expecting it. Just getting him back into the groove will be good. Knee injuries seem to be a tough thing to rebound quickly from when considering the pace of an NHL game.

You do realize that in his entire career fast has never put up more than 34 points, which he did at age 30. Kakko put up 40 points at age 21.
I get that people want to hate on kakko because he had a slow start to the season, but lets be clear, if anything Kakko is a bigger, better version of fast.
Kakko isn't soft, he has a game that is designed for the playoffs and isn't afraid to go to the net. These are literally things we cried for the past decade. He doesn't throw body hits often but that doesn't mean he's a soft player...

I wasnt hating on him i was saying we need him back. Also if his game is made for the playoffs I mustve missed it. Hasnt done squat. I think hes got a shot to be what you describe if he starts playing with some intensity that we have rarely seen from him.

do you not remember the kids being one of our best performing lines in the playoffs vs PITT/Car/TB?
Kakko was a huge part of that. He did alot of the dirty work on the boards. He forced turnovers.

The time off could've given him a reset. Maybe he comes back energized, motivated, and doesn't try to carry the weight of the world.

Yeah that line was good with Kakko playing the Jesper Fast role

And that was before Laf had truly shown what he could do.

Ok so can we agree no more excuses for Kakko when he comes back? I want it to work out for the guy but contract 3 is coming. Time to do something and not blame linemates or coaches. It shouldnt be too much to ask.

Define excuses?
Hockey is a team game, if your linemates to start the season are absolutely terrible, you’re not gonna do much unless you do everything yourself.
Kakko was fine before he got hurt, it was very clear everyone understood Kakko being moved down was because they wanted to try and get Mika and Ck going, not because wheeler deserves the spot and not because Kakko hadn’t been a top line player.

This narrative that he was “bad” to start the season is just wrong.
He could’ve easily had 10 pts before he got hurt if Kreider or Mika could bury gimme goals earlier in the year.
