They also teach us in primary school at the age of 9. All 50 states, with capitals

They taught countries like that when I was a kid. Not sure if they still do. Most people don't remember things from 3rd grade unless there's further use for it. I need a lot of this stuff for my job, which I do partially because I've always been interested in geography, but most people will never need to know where Finland is.

Did you guys know that Mika speaks finnish?
I think it's cool and might help Kakko during the first years abroad :thumbu:

I do wonder if a guy like lias would make sense to center kakko ... Lias' could gain time and space by kakkos possession game and find the soft spots. Would be an interesting combo to try out in preseason.

Lias played with Rakell and Zibanejad quite a lot during his call up last year. I don't think it's out of the question that Lias can be more valuable on the wing, in a "Jere Lehtinen" type role

So strange. I have no idea what value that adds in Europe.

The value of knowing the world. We also learn the Australian states and provinces, the Canadian provinces and territories, the German regions, the South African provinces, the autonomous regions like the Basque region, Catalunya, Abkhazia, Åland, Chechnya, Vojvodina etc.

Laine is a garbage hockey player with an absolute monster shot... Easily one of the 3 beat shooters in my lifetime.

I have no interest in paying him 10 mil a year plus 4 first rounders for a guy with 1 talent.

The perfect guy for kakko to play with is zibanejad...I know he's a center but his game just seems to make sense next to kakko.

For the other side I'd probably go with either buchnevich or kravtsov. Guys who're good at a lot of things and can adapt.

I guess I didnt had that much intell about offersheets, I figured Laine would be at 3mil(hes current salary) an no where near 10 and 4 first. I would not make that offer eighter if thats the case xD.

The value of bragging about your superior education system that brings no value in terms of quality of life. :sarcasm:

Neat

I've lived in Europe for several years now, and their geography education is far better than ours. If you ask many Europeans, they will be able to name many of our states, if not all of them.

I honestly doubt many Americans can name all of our states.

I'm pretty sure every American from my generation can name them all thanks to that annoying "Nifty Fifty" song they made us sing in grade school.

Why teach geography in public schools? If students perform bad, grades are bad, the teachers look bad, and the school looks bad. For most, what would be gained is not used in the "real world", so why not eliminate what could make students, teachers, and schools bad?

For me, I can even name all 50 of them in alphabetical order. Stupid grammar school song.... It's like Schoolhouse Rock in my head...

I always say this when Euros laugh at Americans' geography skills (or lack there of). Its completely useless knowledge. Pretty much trivia. If you want to learn it more power to you (i'm a geography whiz but thats because i'm weird) but there's no reason to teach it in school, its something anyone can find out on their own. Unlike math or science or whatever, which needs to be taught.

Sure, now you can. But back in the 90s, it was different. And I think it definitely is helpful for people with a broader mindset. There's this urban myth that 75% of Americans don't even have a passport because they never leave the country. Not sure how true that is but in Europe, people are far more likely to travel abroad because of the way the continent is made up.

American kids learn 50 states, we learn 50 countries

It's funny, because I've logged more miles of travel than the VAAST majority of Americans but I've only ever been to Canada and Costa Rica internationally. I have hit 48 states, though. Then again, I'm much more interested in geology and landscape than people and cities... the US has a whole continent's worth of variety on that, so it makes sense.

Eventually I'll make it to other interesting places like that (Alps, Andes, etc)... but despite having been to many fewer countries than a lot of people in Europe, I've still probably traveled more.

Yeah, exactly. I have made it a goal to visit one new country and one new state each year.

2015: WA, OR, Turkey, Canada
2016: NY, CT, Czech Rep, Luxembourg
2017: FL, Austria, Finland, Slovakia, Sweden
2018: AZ, TX, NV, Hungary, Switzerland
2019: NJ, Latvia (so far)

It gives me a goal to work towards, and each new state or country comes with new experiences both in culture as well as nature.

Probably more like 25.

That's pretty awesome. There are definitely some places I'd like to go in Europe. Scotland is one. The Alps and Carpathians. Scandinavia.

On topic, I wonder how many countries Kakko has made it to so far?

C'mon now, some of the square ones in the middle all look alike and are pretty boring.

The Four Corners monument is something I learned in school haha. It was being compared to several tri-points in Europe. One of those tri-points is within an hour of where I live.

I've had to travel a ton for work over the years but only a few times internationally (excluding Canada). My sister lives in London, and I envy her because they can be in any number of different countries in a few hours.

Off the top of my head:

Belarus, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia, Canada, United States, Denmark and Norway in this past season just for hockey games.

Pretty awesome, though I'm sure he didn't get to experience much in some of those places. A lot like how I've "been to Houston"... airport-hotel-airport.
