He and Laf are still miles ahead of where most good players were at 20 years old.

Yeah, a lot of the superstars are instant hits, but we don't need superstars. Turns out our franchise player wasn't either of them and our franchise player is better than either of them were projected to be. We already won that fight.

I would be very happy with very good top 6 wingers.
These 2 are busts

Kakko still doesn’t do it for me. Going to be a good, solid player. He isn’t going to be the guy we thought we were getting at #2.

Part of that is our fault - can’t develop him. Part of that is his fault - just can’t produce points.
I knew this last year when people were hoping differently

I said it already two years ago before the draft that he is way overrated and lacks way too much hockey IQ and vision to most probably ever become a true star player. I also said then that I find it very doubtful that he ever becomes an over 70 point player. But I have to say that he has been even clearly worse than I was expecting.

Honestly I’m already lowering my expectations to a career high 40-50 point player. The hockey IQ simply isn’t there for him to be a really good producer at the NHL level. His skillset just doesn’t really support impressive and steady production.

A player with impressive hands and puck protection skills, but average hockey IQ, vision, and passing skills, just a bit above average skating and an inaccurate muffin of a shot will just simply mean that he will most likely always be a quite average player at the NHL level - especially productionwise.

I still very much hope I will be eventually wrong with my estimations, but it definitely doesn’t look like that at the moment.

Watching this thread go from full of supporters and preachers of patience to a near pitchfork mob is frankly depressing even though I was one of the first to get my pitchfork out.

I still hold out hope, but I’m extremely worried about Laf and Kakko. Laf didn’t pick up where he left off, and Kakko seems to have regressed.

Then again, new coach, new players, new system, it’s early November. In a month we could all be laughing at ourselves for overreacting. I remember last season they got off to a bad start too.

.
. Our fan base is notoriously impatient. Like you said new coach, system, and it’s early. Plus people seem to forget Kakko missed time with a injury

My impatience is not with the kids. It’s with the organization that doesn’t want to acknowledge a problem. Right now, Laf looks like Derek Stepan 2.0 and Kakko closer to Marcel Hossa than Marian. Alarm bells should be going off, especially in light of past busts. Meanwhile, their teammates won’t pass to them, Jed Ortmeyer and Tanner Glass remain in charge of their off-ice regiment, and everything is “fine.”

Kakko does not have above average skating lol

. Well i edited it especially for you lol. Fans do need to be more patient. I know fans want them to be instant stars but it doesnt work that way.

I agree with you. But we're not even getting average run if the mill play/numbers from them. Let alone "star" type play/numbers....I just hope something clicks before we're 30/40 games into the season.

. But again it’s only a few weeks in. Kakko missed a bunch of games too. Laf has shown flashes but has jumped around him n different lines. He looked comfortable with chytil and blais

Which is a terrible defensive trio and they were often hemmed in our zone with the 3rd D pair. Until we manage to get competent 3rd Dmen pairing I'm not sure we can put those 3 together consistently

We have to remember this when we call Kakko a bust. Being 12th best among forwards in xGA/60 is no joke. This year he was looking very good before the injury. Now something feels off.

This is fine. But how does one reconcile this with the fact that he has ZERO points? Bad luck would be a reasonable explanation if he had just a few points. Zero? Does he just lack the skills required to finish plays?

Kakko does not have above average skating lol
kakko has elite edges. Kakko does not have above average burst. Kakko has elite balance.
Kakko grades out to an above average skater.
Kakko each year has gotten slightly faster, and if he continues to get faster he will be an elite skater.

Eye test - He does not mesh well with that line and goes entire periods with neither panarin nor strome passing it to him. He generates movement on the puck by doing the hard work, and then they play catch and he doesn't get a point. Panarin literally looks him off at times.
The game last night was a great example. Panarin had him wide open for a cross ice breakout, and then he turns around looks at everyone else, and then dumps the puck in where he has to chase.

I think the veterans are already bored with the rebuild and have been purposely making no use of their kid linemates in hopes that ALL of them would be swapped for Eichel. Now they are no longer tanking but simply too depressed to backcheck. Sigh.

I mean, of course. But how are these advanced stats still so good looking for Kakko given his on ice context?
