I'm glad Kakko's been training with the Barb Underhill of Finland. Looking forward to world-class edge work this year.

Do people realise Hossa at the same age had only 30 points in 60 games? He wasn't anywhere close to the player we got to know later on.

Nor do I see him making the HOF. Great player and great career, but he was more a complimentary final piece guy on those SC teams. Despite his defensive prowess I don't think he ever finish top 5 in Selke voting and he was in the league for what seems like forever. If he was the main weapon on those teams they aren't getting past the 1st or 2nd round

The shitting on Kakko seems to be primarily driven by other teams' fans hatred of the Rangers and their recent luck and/or them making themselves feel better about their later selection.

"The league always helps the Rangers" after they get their first top-3 pick in 53 years...

I thought that was already an established fact.

Yeah, they already reached the stage where they're one f*** up away from settling it.

Player A struggles: But the player...
Player B struggles: But the player...
Player C struggles: But the player...
Player D struggles: But the player...

At some point, it's impossible to ignore the common denominator.

There is that I guess, but they’ve eliminated the biggest wall to further development for those guys.

limiting minutes because you want players to
Focus and learn the defensive side of the puck is always so f***ing stupid when it comes to high picks. Their bread and butter is their offense, and it’s not like they’re elite in the NHL level out of the box (sans McDavid.) not giving guys minutes while trying to bring up the other parts of their game only stands to make them mediocre players.

in other words, f*** David Quinn.

I've read this elsewhere. Sounds good. Where are you seeing these images?

Are those real? He looks fat, not in shape.

Looks fine here. This is from a recent video.

Honestly, he's doing this stuff under professionals and with other athletes. I would not be worried about him being "fat".

Also he himself said that when he started going back on ice the change was noticeable. So I suppose they're doing something right.

Kind of what I was thinking. Not a lot of definition. His dad on draft night looks like a mountain though. I have the same body type. I learned the hard way, that 10lbs was the difference between peak physical monster and slow, lost my edges, detriment to my line.

Jr year I was 5'10" 185 and hard to deal with, Sr season I was 195 and lost my spot in the top 6 and had a hard time controlling my momentum.

Just my peanut gallery take.

I'm looking at the original video of him in the Suomi polo and that above picture looks like his face was puffed up a little. He looks normal in the one you posted. Phew.

Very false. People who get fat bulking up are eating crap or eating way too much. I've had kids put on 15-20 lbs and stay lean/lose body fat. Prentiss has shown me some of his before and afters with NHL guys.
Not if you want to become truly strong. Then you need a layer of fat. If you want to become a poser, you get lean. Ask the strongmen on this planet about that. None of them look like models. As for what Kakko has done, I don't know if he has gone for the strongman regime or the Kessel regime.

As for hockey players, I would not advice them to gain body fat. The gained strength - if included with body fat in such a regime - is not worth the loss in speed, acceleration, stamina and agility. Especially not as a forward. If you're a player that really needs bear strength, sure, maybe. Otherwise? No.

If Kakko wants to become a true power forward, maybe. Otherwise, no. A guy like Reaves or Byfuglien should look a bit fat from his physical training when the season starts, because they really needs to be strong as a bear for their style. Kakko, no.

I have no clue how he thought this was the way to go. I'm concerned.

It's the same way Rantanen has gone and it has worked out for him just fine.

Sure. But Kakko isn't Rantanen in playing style and Rantanen doesn't look like Phil Kessel when the season starts. Something is off in the discipline. Too much Koskenkorva or cheese doodles.

I'm still concerned Kakko doesn't understand what it takes to be successful at the elite level of hockey. Kind of like a less talented Laine, excluding the ridiculous entitlement Laine has shown just because he can shoot a puck.

I'm not saying it's the truth, I'm saying it looks like a concern. On the upside, Kakko has improved greatly defensively, but where is the offense and the ability to shine? This is the season where he has to show he meets his expectations. He has been lackluster so far - and then we see this?

If you ask me he looks like a disappointment. Not because I'm Swedish and he's Finnish, but from how you can look like Kakko if you really give it all to earn millions and become successful. I would train like a maniac if I had the chance to earn millions playing a sport I love. Conclusion: an awkward hope Kakko is not a bust.

Wow. Kakko throughout his career has been described as a training junkey. Literally says in that article that he's constantly on the move and doing stuff at that practice even when the rest of the guys take a break. That recent video where he looks leaner is from yesterday BTW, so maybe people should focus on that instead of some poor photo from maybe weeks ago. I'm pretty sure he's going to be fine. I get it if some people are questioning him bulking up for the gym instead of keeping lean through the summer, but saying it's because he's undisciplined or unmotivated is just straight up BS.
