Importantly his first steps for separation were very good. That's exactly what we talked about this spring that he needed to improve, he clearly has put in work on his skating and it's showing results.

Noticed same from those couple games i've watched. And i think it is going to get even better once he gets more time on ice. He haven't spent time on ice that much yet after summer.

Yeah, he worked on speed, conditioning, strength and skating and according to the trainers he´s in a hell of a shape for the season.

Subban has never really been really fast. His edge work has always been terrific though which is why he's been able to weave his way through people up ice. Back injuries have hurt his mobility overall, he doesn't move the way he used to.

Still Kakko's first few steps have improved. He created separation, which is something we haven't seen much from him prior to this year and you can argue that is more important than flat out speed (for most people), the latter has never been a problem for him.

Though if it were Buchnevich, he would have been caught before he got to the blue line.

I can't argue with numbers, if they clocked Kakko at 25 then that's what it is.

But yeah he looks awkward. Like he's lumbering. He needs to get some more burst I feel like.

Still, 3 points in 3 games, right? He's trending up. I'm not discouraged.

It's all that bulk. Still, he pulled away (yeah, it's Subban), but when you have force = mass x acceleration with that big-boy body that's still growing, that means he's an unstoppable runaway train.

He had a great breakaway attempt earlier in the preseason, shorthanded as well. I'll say it again that this kid isn't ever going to be 'fast.' But for all the pages spent on his shot in this thread, I'm surprised there's no mention of the finish last night.

His line didn't play great overall though. I still don't see it with the three of them and would really rather have Kakko with Zibanejad. Our best defensive winger with our top scoring center. If Lafreniere can fit on the other wing, that's a line that could have all the parts to work--chance suppression, transition success, and finishing ability.

It was an absolutely fabulous goal. In every possible way.

Nice acceleration, Bernier shit the bed though and was caught between a 2 pad stack and paddle down and Kakko slid it under his pad despite being in pretty deep at that point

I've been saying this too. Switch Kakko and Laf.

Msg had a clip of the goal on replay late in the 3rd that showed his speed, he topped out at 25mph. McDavid skates regularly at 25mph haha, Kakko went all out to hit that.

Look... EVERYONE is going to be one or several steps below if you compare them to McDavid... What purpose does it serve?
