Value of: JVR 50% retained

For those who dont get why Toronto would retain... Its pretty clear they would in a trade. I stated it earlier in this thread, but youd get more value and lose nothing retaining 50%.

JVR is well worth his value, No way would Lou retain 50% of JVR's salary no need to.

Yeah, why would a GM with the wealthiest owners in the league want to get more value for a return? Silly idea.

...

Edit: 'hey contending teams with little cap, we dont care about how much more value youd give us, we will just settle with JvRs orignal value. We dont need any more, we are already a cup favorite'

Some people just dont think.

Have to admit though, If Lou was willing to retain 50% on JVR or $2.125 million in say a deal for Fowler that would definitely help out BM who has an internal budget there in Anaheim that wouldn't be a bad deal for him.

Exactly. Not only would the value increase from retention, but also the field of buyers would open up.

A team like Anaheim, like you said, would definitely pay up a decent bit
more for a guy like JvR at ~2m

On the fence about trading JVR now. Before this UFA crop, I was expecting his next contract to be in the 7.5+ range with Bobby Ryan as his comparable. If that's the case, trading him now is the move that makes the most sense. After this summer though, I could see him signing somewhere in the 6mil range longterm which is more palatable.

I would trade JVR for a young up and coming D or in a package for a blue chip D prospect, that's about it. I am fine with keeping him and even extending him. We need some established players in the lineup to shelter the minutes of the youngins.

I don't think JVR would return a young top 4 defenseman unless he had limited upside. I think Toronto's best bet would be to gamble a bit on a good defensive prospect, someone that has top line upside but isn't quite as safe a bet as the highest end defensive prospects. Not sure who fits that bill and/or which team feels it's a JVR away from cup contention over the next couple years. But if they could work it out, it would seem to be the best value for all involved. JVR isnt a guy I would build around, and they can afford the gamble right now.

Maybe something around Mirco Mueller with SJ?

no offensive upside from what i can tell and is a lhd, so wouldnt work.
i think jvr can return a top 4 dman and if he cant unless we go for the quantity for quality route with a lot of good quantity i dont think we should move jvr.

JVR at 50% would get a massive return.

Young potential top 6 forward + young potential top 4 D + 1st at least IMO. Maybe one other piece, a secondary "B" prospect if anything.

I think if the leafs were offered a deal like that JVR would be moved.

A 55-60 point player at 2.125M for 2 years , could he get a good young top 4 dman?

He on a good contract as it is . I don't think you need to retain . I know Hall will mention in D men threads so let be clear Edmonton overpaid and it is not the going rate . NJD also could not really afford to do the deal so they wanted an overpayment as well . Bottomline Hall larsson trade has no bearing on normal trades . JVR should be about to get a Brodin type of D . I don't think he will pull a 2 way D man . But hey we seen stranger .

leafs are already retaining 1.2 on kessel until the next lockout, so why add more dead cap unless they're getting a great return?

I don't understand why everyone is having such a hard time with this. JvR on his current contract is worth nothing to my team. We don't have the pieces to move for his cap hit, and he won't fit.

You retain 50%, and we open up our cupboards. I could easily see Stan Bowman giving up Pokka, Schmaltz/Forsling, and maybe as much as a 1st round pick for JvR on that contract. You guys don't seem like you're willing to pay to get rid of Lupul, so that retention slot doesn't matter. His contract comes off in two years, which makes it easy for Toronto to do.

You go from having a fairly valuable asset to holding one of the most valuable available assets in the entire NHL.

Not that hard to grasp.

Adds value to teams that are tight on cap space. Less so on teams that have the space for him.

Two of the teams (ANA/CHI) who would be the best fit just happen to be tight on cap. Fancy that. They also could be arguably called in 'win now'mode, and would likely be more willing to pay a little more than teams who have cap, but aren't as close to contending.

I would be very down for some kind of deal like this.

JVR would cost a pretty penny alone, but for $2.125 the return would have to be great. I would target a young top 4 RHD with upside.

A team isn't going to trade a young top 4, right hand shot defenceman for JVR no matter how much is retained.

JVR is a complimentary player, he's not a difference maker and it's a lot easier to find a top 6 left shot winger than a top 4 right hand shot defenceman.

100 percent get what your saying.. not sure why people are not acknowledging it or arguing about how he is already on a good contract. Simple really the teams that are one or two players away from contending for the cup are 90 percent of the time close to the cap and can not add a 4 million dollar contract. So if a team like the leafs were to hold a significant portion of salary say 50 percent you are now not limiting yourself to the teams you could trade player x to and get a bidding war or max value..

I think your offer was right on and not a fan of moving jvr but if that is being offered I would think real hard about it..

I disagree. My team (the Hawks) would probably trade Pokka + pick of Schmaltz/Forsling + a small piece for him retained at 50%.

Would be tempting...

Pokka
Schmaltz/Forsling <- Tough choice between one of Nylander's best friends and an impressive Swedish dman. I'll take whoever Hunter thinks will be better, would not be surprised to see them pick Schmaltz.

I'd do that schmaltz + pokka + 1st for JVR deal at 50%.

After I posted this I immediately thought we could get more as he is 50% retained. Give me the 1st.

Its a really good deal for both teams in my opinion. JvR could easily slot in to the left of Toews and fill the void left by Brandon Saad. Both very similar players in my opinion. Would never give that up for a 1 year rental, but he's signed for two more seasons, and in my opinion, those are the two seasons we have the best chance to compete.

Toronto gets Pokka, who looks like he could eat top-4 minutes as soon as this year. I'd rather part with Forsling, as I think Schmaltz could really contribute this year, but I'd be willing to give you guys preference on those two. 1st rounder on top for JvR at 50%? Tough addition, but I make it. JvR (and his contract) would fit perfectly.

Edit: I comically overused in my opinion, in my opinion.

LOL. JVR at 50% retained...........would be 100% dumb for the Leafs to do.

I don't know. I think the team that gives JVR his next deal will regret it. I also think JVR on his current deal has a lot of value over the next two seasons to a win-now team. With the Leafs several years away from truly competing, it would almost seem stupid not to trade JVR. If they've got to retain $2m, so what? All their best players are on ELC's.
