I wouldn't want to ruin his game right now and hope it continues.. but if he's staying hit till the middle of the season, do we try him with Reilly and give him more minutes?

Or keep him with Muzzin and don't ruin a good thing?

Definitely don't mess with it. TJ Brodie is an unsung hero at the moment because he's covering for how terrible Rielly's been defensively.

There's a reason no one seems to work well with Rielly. Best thing Holl can do for Rielly is take more of the tough minutes away from him.

Holl is literally beating out icings in the final minutes of the game now. Guy is playing absolutely fantastic hockey and is a huge part of why we're doing so well defensively so far. Munching big shutdown minutes and dominating them.

I really, really, really hope he keeps this up.

Since Keefe took over as head coach, here is where Holl ranks amoung the 77 Dmen who have played 800 5v5 (score adjusted) minutes since then:

QoC: Near top of the league shutdown usage

Offensive Zone Faceoff%: 43.09 (8th lowest out of 77)

CF%: 53.37 (13th best out of 77) (Comparables: 12th - Pietrangelo, 14th - Josi)

Shot differential%: 54.27 (9th best out of 77) (Comparables: 8th - Josi, 10th - McAvoy)

Scoring chance differential%: 54.90 (9th best out of 77) (Comparables: 8th - Slavin, 10th - McAvoy)

High danger chance differential%: 54.54 (16th best out of 77) (Comparables: 15th - Slavin, 17th - Chabot)

Expected goal differential%: 56.01 (7th best out of 77) (Comparables: 6th - Roy, 8th - McAvoy)

Look at his friggin zone starts and usage. He has ELITE underlying numbers.

Watching that moronic intermission segment made the hockey public collectively dumber. Durr.....I think hes a 5.........durrr......

The guy eats hard minutes against the best in the league and has elite numbers. Its still a small sample of course but the guy was never given a real chance before. If he keeps this up, he's becoming one of the most amazing stories in the NHL the last while. Wasnt long ago he was in the ECHL and now he's one of the better dmen in the league. Maybe the folks on the panel should tell the public about it instead of saying he's a "number 5 dman". (I know it wasnt every panelist but, cmon man, do some friggin research.)

...rant over.....

The last 3-4 games he's been better then a #5. I want to call him a top 4 d-man (and he is playing like one) but I want this to continue before I give him that title.

He’s becoming the D man I’ve dreamed the Leafs would be able to trot out to protect a lead.
I don’t know how he ranks on poke checks and tipped passes amount those 77, but he gets his share.

Wow...

Thanks for posting that. Matches the eye test, he looks fantastic.

It's inexcusable that Keefe had Rielly out there against McDavid so many times tonight, especially near the end. Eaten alive. We need Wingspan man Holl.

What a pleasent surprise. He was getting propped up by Muzzin last season but this season he has taken a huge step. I had him as #4 with Muzzin, and a #5 without him, and now he just might be a top 4 d man. It's too early to call him that but what a start.

Depends on what you consider to be a top pairing dman I guess but he's certainly been a top 4 dman since Keefe become coach and a really good one too.

He brought back the style that got him his contract and made him a quick fan favorite.

When he's trying to be Karlsson he's an absolute mess so hopefully he finally found the perfect balance and sticks to this more shutdown style , simple game.

Hes our best D this year hands down (so far).
