to be fair I'm not sure we can conclude that pure possession (i.e. time of puck possession) is necessarily more or even as important as effective possesion (i.e. number and quality of chances created and prevented).
Shots are shots, possession is possession. They are 2 separate strategies. I would argue that the best defensive strategy is to have the puck.

well, it certainly helps, but there's a decent chance that preventing quality and quantity of chances might be a better defensive indicator than simply possessing the puck more.

Imperfect analytics have only built an imperfect heuristic to replace an imperfect heuristic of pure visual observations. It is taught to shoot more because there is a higher probability given a higher frequency. We all know shot location and pass location are important yet the low brow behavioural push is to shoot when possible. When true possession is measured and true turnovers are measured as well...which includes shooting, failing and giving the puck over to the other team as a result, we start identifying individuals who truly drive play to generate higher high scoring chances. There are a plethora of variables that point to who is keeping the puck in the ozone and who is not.

in the end, though, there's no rule that says pure possession is more important than the creation and prevention of quality scoring chances.

we will have to see which data ends up being more predictive.

We have been asking Dubas to bring in another smooth skating, big and defensive defenseman all summer but just maybe we have had him under our nose all along.

Holl is developing really nicely and is a great character person.

If he can continue to get stronger and better defensively I don't see how he can't become even a (fill in) top pairing d man.

Corsi shot counts dont do that. Manually compiled-error ridden manual determinations do that. No need for that with puck tracking technology.

Just curious... If Holl plays really well this season is there a chance he's kept from Seattle? Likely can only protect 3D so I'd assume Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie but if Muzzin has a bad year any chance he's exposed instead?

Would leave

Rielly Brodie
Dermott Holl
Sandin Lehtonen?/Liljegren

And would free up 5.5m for a Rielly extension/Goalie

If Holl gets deemed a must keep management will just make a side deal with Seattle. They then would take Dermott, Kerfoot or Soup.

Though ino its better to be good defensively paired eith the potential for an offensive output (shots/attempts) than just playing day keep away in the netral zone. Why I like the term "meaningful possession" to just raw possession

We knew Rielly, Brodie, and Muzzin were going to hold their own as the top 3, but Holl was the wildcard. 4 games into the year and we can already see that last season was no fluke; he's arguably been our top defenseman this year.

If he can keep up his play and the top 4 can stay healthy, I think the Leafs are going to be a much improved team. We're already seeing that improvement through 4 games.

Mikheyev is exempt I believe, unless you are talking about Campbell who would be our goalie protected considering Andy is a UFA

Dermott seems like he may be the odd man out unless he too proves himself a must keep as well this season. Though giving up a B level prospect for them to take Kerfoot seems acceptable to me

Id go 4 and 4 personally and would give up a bit more to have them take Engvall

If they provide more accurate data then yes that's great.

If I'm Seattle I probably prefer Dermott over Holl. For our team I think Holl might be more important to protect.

Of course I'm also down to expose either Muzzin and Brodie and keep both. Probably a good case for that given contracts.

Dermott is getting better and better before our eyes.
At this point there's no way I would expose Dermott to Seattle. Even if that means exposing Muzzin

Holl struggled in the playoffs but has very quietly had a great start to the season. He’s become the Zach Hyman of the D. A late bloomer who just keeps getting better with age.

Loved his game tonight. I think his puck handling has actually gotten better in the past year.
I think he will continue to improve as he gets a little more NHL experience under his belt. There was a play tonight where he skated over to the boards and trapped the Edmonton player with the puck, took the puck and played it up ice. Simple, effective, not flashy ... I don't know how anyone who actually watches games could not be happy with this guy.

Dermott player like 8 minutes last night. It’s pretty clear Keefe/Dubas don’t really like him.

Holl has been more effective this year than I thought he would be, especially defensively.

Holl is a stud, he played great for the Marlies during their cup run. He rocks an outstanding muuuu-let ... he plays simple D, he knows who he is and plays that way, multiple good quiet plays on McDavid last night.. he is subtilty effective. I hope we don't lose him to the Kraken.

Yes, he was trusted, hence we lost. There are trusts on these types of players. Players that Keefe is in love with
Remember him against Columbus, he was trash then, he's trash now. He can't make simple plays. Only thing he does right is shoot right

Defence was not the issue in that series, it was offence. That is not Holl's job.

Fantastic defensive game against McDavid. Used his reach and skating to just disrupt his chances last night. Also didn’t force too much on the transition or rush to join the play which I appreciate.

He has great awareness of his limits which he's able to overcome with smart positioning, using his size and reach to break up offensive chances. Combined with his solid puck moving skills, he's becoming a dependable #4.

Works well with Muzzin.
