Gardiner with 15 min on the 3rd pairing and 3 min on the top PP unit to start the season wouldn’t be a bad thing, particularly with the back issues he’s had.

I don't think that's actually a waste if he's the #1 PPQB. Suboptimal, maybe, but not a waste.

I'd agree IF that ends up being the case, but i feel like Rod will continue trying to force feed Faulk minutes on the top PP even though it obviously was not working. Gardiner is known from his time with the leafs as a PP QB and i just hope he is given a fair shake in that role is all.

But can Jake blast one into the end boards from the blue line?!

I think it's more likely we go to 3F/2D on both teams:
Gardiner-Faulk on the first unit
Slavin-Hamilton on the second unit.

I keep the second unit the same as last year because they seemed to come out at the end and stay out at ES. And that way, you have Gardiner QB the first and Hamilton the 2nd.

I think Faulk would do alright from the left half wall.

Just using Faulk as a data point. Quality of ice time is hard to measure and will have an effect on those numbers. In general, I'm a little hesitant about the individual impact Gardiner will have playing with the same personnel on the 1st unit. Multiple changes need to be made.

Multiple changes will obviously be made; that was the point of getting Haula and Dzingel, and maturation of Svech and hopefully Necas. But you can't put a bunch of speedy PP guys out there with a shoot-first PPQB.

That isn't the type of change I'm talking about. The Finns need to be separated. I'm skeptical that pass-first vs. shoot-first D will matter if the three play hot potato looking for a low percentage scoring opportunity from distance.

From another user on the Trades board:

Friedman was told last night by a source that this trade is not likely to happen (in the first few minutes of this interview from this morning):

Elliotte Friedman on the Marner negotiations: 'It has been painful and personal' - Sportsnet.ca

For those wanting to spend less time than I did listening about other rumors, the Faulk trade talk starts just before the 10:00 minute mark.

To paraphrase the details:
  • doesn't think it's going to happen, but not firm on that
  • deal seems to be in place and not contingent on a contract between the two teams, but up to Faulk to waive NTC which is contract related
  • thinks Faulk must start to see the "writing on the wall" about opportunity in contract year in Carolina
  • thinks the team will work to trade him to a destination he wants that may be "not on his list" (which seems to lend some credence to the list as a tool vs. places he "doesn't want to be")

Staal, Faulk, 2nd (2020)

For

Laine, 3rd (2021)
Both have no movement clauses. I doubt both would waive to go there given what the Canes' chances are this year. Additionally, while we did pretty well filling in for Staal last year while he was out injured, I doubt we do as well over a full season without him as we would with him in his role.

As an outsider. It seems to me Necas & Aho are the future. Best to move Staal while his value is high before his term becomes his dominant feature. On the flip, Winnepeg is seeing an exodus and Buff is getting older, I could see them interested in a locked in player like Staal and take flyer on Faulk and have a season to convince him to stay.

Faulk waves if WPG is the only trade partner because I can't see him wanting to get 3rd pair minutes heading into UFA and already showing a chink in his armour the past 2 seasons.

Laine is a heck of a get if they can. Between him, Svech, Neids, Tevu, Necas should be skilled enough to hold his own and not look out of place.

I get what your saying about this season as Carolina did well for themselves, I think long term it makes more sence.

If both wanted to go to the Jets, I’d do it probably. But I doubt they both would. You say Faulk would waive to avoid 3rd pairing minutes, but if we look at Our coach’s use of him last year, there is no reason to think that would happen. He played the 2nd most minutes of all or defenders in the playoffs and was part of the shutdown pairing with Pesce. He also got the 1st unit PP time. That all is unlikely to change and is perfect for a guy in his contract year, so why leave? And all that said about Faulk, why would Staal want to leave?

If the Ducks deal falls apart (I'm actually still hopeful about it considering that I view September 15th as the crucial date as far as extensions are concerned), I see Dallas as being a good potential trade partner. Once they put Hanzal on LTIR, they'll have enough space to fit in Faulk and potentially extend him. I've always been high on Faksa (particularly on defense) and I think he'd be a solid fit for the 200-feet system that Brindy and the Borg emphasizes. I also think a Faulk swap with Dallas could allow us to take a low-risk swing on Honka, which I would gladly be in favor of.

Just trade Faulk for an NHL forward already. I was excited when the credible Kase speculation was new. Now? Not so much. "Do something!"
