Jumbotrons. Is double jumbo's the pinnacle ?

Seattle has double jumbotrons. Is this considered the best ? Or does the big center jumbotrons that Edmonton and Vancouver have for example, just a different way of doing it ? If double jumbos was the pinnacle, you would think that Vancouver or Edmonton would have done it too. The new Vancouver one has seamless screens which I don't believe the Edmonton one has.

I'll admit, after watching some clips of Seattle from an average upper seating position, it looks pretty damn good. But big singles do offer a more traditional hockey arena look. Maybe this is why Vancouver opted for the new single.

How old are Montreal or the Leafs jumbotrons ? If they are aging and close to being updated, would they go for double jumbos or just a big single ? As Leafs or Montreal fans , do you want doubles like Seattle has or a new single ? As a Vancouver fan, I am not sure what to think. I'd like an explanation as to why we don't have doubles.

It's crazy how the ring boards that were being installed circa 2009 went obsolete real quick.
what ring boards ? in hockey ?

This is absolutely going to be what we start seeing in the next gen of arenas or updates to the jumbotrons. Not identical, but this sort of idea.
But football fields are bigger. So I dunno if it makes a lot of sense. It looks like we are going to be with single jumbos at hockey arenas for another cycle

After looking at this clip, maybe not. I dont see why a smaller version wouldn't work for an arena. The Leafs should do this. They have so much money and like to be king sh**. Do it

I don't really get the appeal of this weird TV screen dick measuring contest for arenas. It reaches a point where it just seems distracting and detracts from the experience. If i wanted to watch the game on a screen...i'd just stay at home. Or head to a sports bar or something.

But anyway...i'd imagine there are some structure considerations to "double jumbos" for a lot of arenas that were never really engineered to hang those immense weights off of multiple off-center points. They're more likely designed and bolstered to hang that giant dong from somewhere above center ice. So Seattle's building is probably a bit unique in that sense.

When I was a little kid, this is the style of scoreboard I remember in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.

Then came those diamiond vision scoreboards such as the one shown a few pages back where the buffalo one fell on the ice. That one became quite a trend.

Speaking of similarities, I'm convinced whoever built the pne coliseum shown in your pic also built the Edmonton coliseum. They looked like twins.

I don't find it distracting at all - it's great for replays and if you happen to be in seats where it's tougher to see certain parts of the ice. You're not just sitting there staring at the screen the whole time.

When the Devils installed their new (much larger) jumbotron in 2017, it noticeably improved the in-game experience.

What nobody is talking about in here is what information is actually conveyed by these boards during play.

Must haves:
- Team name/logo
- Score
- Period
- Time Remaining
- Penalty type/time remaining/player serving x4 (minimum)
- Shots on goal

Nice to have:
- Local time
- Time out used?
- Hits
- Faceoff stats
- Players on ice/lineup card
- Giveaways/takeaways
- Empty net/delayed penalty indicator
- Out of town scores

You can really only look at 1 at a time - what's the point? Seems stupid...

Edit: also inb4 "I'm seeing double, 4 jumbotrons"

You're not the only one in the arena, I can imagine that double allows for fans to watch the one they have the best view of

Not that I care much abiut the jumbotron though, as long as it doesnt obstruct the on ice product

Oh god, please just place sheet metal in the spaces. You could make it look like a cup or something, just don’t leave them awkward ass spaces. Otherwise it honestly works.

Struggling not to be an old man about this. I enjoy a spectacle, but not above my sportsball game.

I was at a game in Edmonton and they never had the period on the jumbotron. Which is crazy imo.

I think the new one does retain a classic standard look like this though.

what is this ? is there a link ?

It’s part of the Coyotes’ original presentation for the Tempe Entertainment District which was voted down. Most of that has been removed from the internet.

But if they get another site approved the buildings are going to keep the same architectural features. Including the same ring scoreboard with LCD ceiling.
