I don't "hate" many players, but Ribeiro is one that I do. Great skill, but an awful individual on and off the ice.

Booth is a guy I might take a flyer on, but he looked pretty cooked in Vancouver.

Never wanted this guy, but guy off the board:

Nick Kypreos ‏@RealKyper · 35s
#NHL signing. Olli Jokinen 1 year deal. 2.5m. # Preds

Not bad for Nashville.

It's been heavily implied that concerns about Riberio are more than just attitude related. Rangers won't sign him.

Not sure if anyone posted this yet:

Wonder if he and Kulemin still want to be a package deal.

What do you think the two will go for together?

Kulemin made $2.8m last year, and is still probably a borderline 3m player.

Grabo was at $3 but it looked like a discount deal. Hard to believe he couldn't get 4m.

Wonder if they'd do 6.5 combined.

I would rather Ribero. He'd be a perfect center kind of a tweener like Stepan.

Give him an Olli Jokinen like deal. 1 year 2.5..

Whether some of you like it or not, there is a youth movement going on with this team.

I don't think you can expect more than 2, maybe 3 rookies, tops in your line up... but that would make 5-6 "rookies" in 2 years coming in as regulars. That's 20-25% of a team. Let's say that trend continues for the year after this too... 7-9 rookies on a group of 20... nearly half.

Kreider, Zucarello, and Talbot played their first "full" nhl seasons last year.
Miller was up and down. Consider him a regular for next year.

We have 3 holes: 3c, 3LW, 4RW. Miller is on the 3rd line, likely at the center position.

Doesn't look like we can sign anyone else of substance to fill those spots in. Those 3 spots are going to rookies.

Miller, Lindberg, Fast, Haggerty, that kid Mueller, the Bourque brothers, Kristo, Duclair... they're all going to have a fair shake at spots.

Not to mention if we go down with an injury or two on the blue line... who else are we going to turn to? Of course, more rookies - like Allen and McIlrath. Next year? We likely see a Skjei sighting.. Duclair, Tambellini, Buchnevich (who everyone hails is the best of that bunch) could all get shots. A year later? That Iverson kid, maybe other prospects who we've acquired.

And before that? These last 2-4 years has seen us promote McD, Stepan, and Hagelin. All young guys.

Whether we want it, or not, this team's future is in its youth. Not all (or even many) of the kids we gush about will make the team, but there will invariably be many spots and opportunities for these kids to come in and become regulars.

But in regards to the next 2 years specifically, look for 5-6 prospects to come up and be relied on as regulars. The trick will be for Vigneault to put them in positions to succeed, like he did with Kreider and Zucarello this year.

Four years in, you're not a rookie. Not even a sophomore.

with the options out there I would try and get Ribero on a one year deal, warts and all because it doesnt cost any assets other than cap space and out of all the inperfect solutions to rounding out the forward group his one would have the highest potential upside.

give Ribero 2 big bodies who can finish off his playingmaking and maybe he shows some chemistry to get more out of Nash

Krieder-Ribero-Nash
Hags-Stepan-St Louis
Miller-Brass-Zucc
Glass-Moore-Fast/UFA

gives St Louis a legit center to work with and I think Miller can easily replace the game that Pouliot brought to the Brass-Zucc line and will thrive just having to keep it simple and use his speed/size to dig pucks and then get to the net and those 2 will find him.

would like Grabo more but Ribero will require less term

They can't afford him.

And honestly, Im not about to condone moving pieces around to create cap space for an unspectacular player like Grabovski

Grabo isn't a great player, but I think he would do a lot better centering the third line than Miller.

I know we need to get youth in the lineup, but considering out 3rd line is currently MZA and two rookies, I think you gotta make moves. I honestly think Fast-Grabo-MZA could be just as good, if not better, than Poo-Brass-MZA. In fact, if we get Grabo he's our 2C, imo. If that takes trading Klein, you do it.

we know Arizona bought him out because of personal issues but what accounts have you read? do you have an anecdotes to cite or first hand experience? I'm curious, does anyone know exactly what the knock is?

No you don't. The team we have for day 1 of the season won't be the same team we have at the trade deadline. It's a lot easier to add salary at the deadline.

We are much better off going with Miller to see what he can do. He won't be the difference between us making the playoffs and not making the playoffs. See what he can do and if he doesn't cut it, then we make a move when the cap hits won't matter as much.

Not every problem needs to be solved today. Some of the problems we have today may not end up being problems at all. Everyone said we had to sign a 3rd line center rather than give the job to Dubinsky. By the end of the year, Dubi was centering Jagr.

Whether you're a rookie based on the amount of games played, not years you're eligible or had a cup of coffee and never got it.

Sather obviously is changing his philosophy on NMC/NTC as these were key issues with Callahan and, now, Stralman. These might be necessary to secure marquee players, but role players (and that's not a knock on Callahan and Stralman) shouldn't be able to tie your hands down the road. Look at St. Loius, Spezza, etc... dictating where they will and won't go and how that affects your ability to negotiate. I give Sather credit for standing his ground on this issue and not tying his hands in the future.

Honestly, there wasn't much out there at reasonable price that could've helped the Rangers all that much. Best value contracts out there were probably Erhoff and B. Boyle (who, again, was trying to dictate what his role was going to be which is something you can't have for a 3rd/4th line player) and that's about it.

Get the RFA's signed, maybe sign a value guy that's still around today or tomorrow, and hopefully one of Fast, Lindberg, Haggerty, etc... stick on the big club. I think the NYR are planning on Miller being a regular next season.

Agreed, we need to steer this to limited NTCs, give someone like Stralsy 10 teams to block or whatever. Not a NMC.

Well the knock on him, according to Puck Daddy, was that he was late to practices and missed busses all the time and even got into a screaming match with the coach.

However, I have had an experience with him in my personal life that I always tried to throw out as general immaturity, but it seems that he never got over it. I hate the way he is on the ice with the continual diving and super-pest behavior, but he is/was a very skilled player and I tried not to let that experience manifest itself when talking about him. No, it wasn't anything illegal or substance-abuse related, but that's all I care to say about it.

We really don't have any cap room left.

Don't know how we're looking at Ott, who wouldn't be more than a 4th line guy at this point, or even a guy like Grabovski who would center our 3rd line and probably be injured for 1/3 of the season.

It seems unavoidable, at this point, that we will roll into the season with 2-3 rookies... and I am absolutely FINE with that.

Why people are so up in arms about it is beyond me. We have a good core group of guys. Every good team has prospects that contribute.

LA had Toffoli and Pearson and weren't even thought of as much of a Cup contender, even after they got Gaborik.

Cups aren't won in the offseason. I'm perfectly fine, rolling in with Miller, Lindberg, and 1 more prospect to start the season. If tune ups need to be made, so be it.

We can open up cap space, if need be, by moving Klein and Glass mid-season. We're gonna be in on some guys mid-season.

Hell, if we're really struggling for balance on our top 9, i'd imagine we make a hard push for Bobby Ryan. Him on our 3rd line would be an optimal fitting, especially with Zucc and Brassard.

The point is, what the roster is now, really shouldn't matter.

We could have all veterans and 3 of them get seriously injured and we'd be forced to play prospects regardless. Any successful team needs their prospects to step in and take the leap from minor to major league player.

I think in the regular season, we'll have enough fire power even with 3 prospects, to get the job done.

When has an NTC or NMC ever stopped us from trading someone? We signed Kotalik to a 3 year deal with a limited NTC and a few months later traded him to Calgary despite Kotalik having Calgary as one of the teams he wouldn't go to.

I agree we shouldn't give them out like candy, but they can be worked around.
