Confirmed with Link: JT Miller traded to NYR for Chytil, Mancini, 1st round pick (protected)

I look at it this way: Chytil, although I like him, is probably at best a 50-60-point C, and has yet to even get to 50. Even his best “pace” year had him right at 50. He’s going to be 26 at the beginning of the season. How much development room is really left?

Miller has hit (or paced) 50+ in 9 straight seasons, and despite this being his worst season to date - feud or not - still has him near the PPG mark for the 6th straight season. Sure he is older, but I can’t see Chytil ever having a stretch like this. Hell, I’d be surprised if Chytil ever has a PPG pace season in a season he played more than 7 games in.

Mancini is fine, but the Rangers have identified similar caliber players in later rounds of the draft seemingly every year. The 1st is the most valuable asset in my mind, and only if the Rangers totally bomb next season. If it ends up being pick 25+, the Rangers will never miss it.

The head case / captain material comments aside, it’s clear Drury is looking to remake the culture - something many of us have wanted for decades. I don’t get anyone thinking this is anything short of an easy no-brainer. With the cap going up so much the next two years, Miller will be making mid-tier 2C money very soon.

If Miller can continue being a legit 1C, I understand the argument that if you can get a 1C for that price, you do it.

But that's what people said about Panarin when he was available and didn't really fit where the team was at the time.

If Miller works out, they're gonna feel forced to do something with him while he's here, and feeling that way about Panarin is what led to giving Zibanejad a terrible contract.

And here we are years later still in the same old cycle:

"Do it now"... ➡️ "figure it all out later"... ➡️
"Do it Now"... ➡️ "figure it all out later"... ➡️
"Do it Now"... ➡️ "figure it all out later".......

When do we get to the "we figured it out!" part?

Also, we're really f***ing old, and don't really feel close to winning.

Even taking the most generous view possible, nobody would say this is a top 5 team. Top 1 wins the Stanley Cup.
And if he doesn’t put them in that conversation now it’s not gonna get any better. All their major horses are just getting older and worse and all their young guys have been cast away other than Lafreniere.

'Nucks fan here. I'm a bit numb to all of it, right now.

Not too fussed over the return. It is what it is. To be expected.

FWIW, you definitely got the best player in this trade. I loved his passion. He has been everything we could have hoped for since he arrived from TB. Our team just lost the fire in its belly.

Dunno anything bout the D prospect. Hope he's a third pairing guy one day, I guess.

Chytil: Level with me, what are we getting?
Chy is a great guy, great skater, and can carry the puck. Should produce more points but biggest issue is health. We worry about how many concussions he has had. I doubt anyone will say a bad word about him as a person.

Figured it out really means 'win the cup' though doesn't it? So it's not something we'll get to except through hindsight.
The team will never be good enough until it is, and even then we won't know it at the time (if it ever happens)

Okay so now that I’m done with dinner, my thoughts.

Trade does nothing for me largely.

Value wise it’s meh. I don’t expect JT to be a 100 point player here. The defensemen they got in return are largely thrown ins. Brannstrom will be out of the organization by the summer and Vancouver fans collectively yawned that the other kid got included

I’m not happy they ejected on Chytil. They have no dynamic centers under the age of 30. The pipeline is atrocious. And they basically locked up their 1st for the foreseeable future which means if someone I would actually trade a first for becomes available, they’re f***ed.

this move doesn’t inspire any confidence that Drury is a good GM

Thanks for the new thread.

I hate what this deal represents. If it signals a culture change and Krieder, Lindgren, and Zibanejad are gone in separate deals, fine.
This trade becomes A+ if Miller continues to play as he did for the Nucks and the roster moves in a direction away from the old core. Because I don't see how he fixes the aforementioned guys games. I mean something tells me Miller gets on PP1 but Kreider and Mika stay on as well because of being hurt feelings. While Trocheck takes the demotion down because he's the most mature.

Right, if you want Miller to help be the strong leader to develop youth, great. But that means ditch Kreider and Mika and Panarin and go get a bunch of youth.

They are gonna fool themselves into reinforcing themselves around Mika and Panarin.

Will, Kam, Schneider, Oth, Gabe, etc are still here. Will use picks/prospects from upcoming CK, Zibs, and Lindy trades to get younger.

The cap is about to go up $25m in 3 years. And after that, guess what? It’s still going up! The Covid cap gave the illusion that this is a league full of equals. It’s not. We’re on the cusp of being back to a league of some cap teams and otherwise, budget teams. Guess which one the Rangers are and always will be?

The “tear everything down and rebuild through the draft so we can be competitive in 7 years” crew really should find another team. This is not your team. They are going to build through free agency and trades with the hope that they can draft well with the picks they have. That’s it. Save your years and years of laments about oh how you wish they would just operate like Carolina or the Devils or get the draft picks that Buffalo and Columbus and Anaheim have had. You’re barking up the wrong organization.

From a pure on-ice value standpoint it’s a good move for the rangers.

However, it’s clear for years now that this team has a culture problem. I just find it hilarious that the guy we covet has taken several mental health leaves and was in a public feud with his teammate. It just feels like we never learn.

It’s fair to tell the team you love that they are being stupid.

Don't forget Brann is a young decent d as well . It's actually a good trade. I would've tried to get a late pick as well since they were looking to get rid of JT.
Decent is a bit of a stretch. Canucks defense may be the worst in the league after their top 2 and he couldn't even find a consistent spot on it. Good offensive instincts though.

Because the Rangers think he's a good player and want him to play in a position that don't have any young guys for? I'd say the Rangers for good or for ill are far less worried about Miller's age than people on here are
But if we are getting rid of all the guys mentioned all Miller does is help us be mediocre. We are directionless.

Obviously the Rangers aren’t worried. They are wrong as they have been on so many issues over the last few years.

Sad to see Chytil go but I must admit I held my breath every time he got hit. Hopefully he does well in Vancouver. I hope he stays healthy. He has a great attitude and is a pretty good player. Very likeable guy.
I would have kept Mancini and traded Jones or Lindgren. Jones needs to get a chance to play somewhere else. Mancini has size and he did pretty well here at the beginning of the year. A few rookie mistakes here and there but he showed a lot of promise.
I can't wait to see JT version 2.0 play with the Rangers again.

We may be. But we literally have no idea what else Drury is looking for either through trades or UFA.
Miller likely has at least 4 seasons of 'decent' hockey left. There's just far too many variables in a roster of that time to proclaim 'we can only be mediocre'.
Especially when you look at what this org has been able to do with 'mediocre' forward groups over the past decade

Ok. But then why are we trading for a 32 year old?
Trying to improve the team. If we didn't have JT and we traded Zibs for prospects that would be throwing in the towel. 90% of people would trade Zibs for JT. If we get a 1st for Zibs then thats what this deal basically was. Not making light of Chy who I think highly of but we all know Chys hockey future is a question mark. I hope he is safe. Great guy.

You just said we will get picks from upcoming Lindgren, Mika and Kreider trades. If you move out Panarin, Kreider and Mika you aren’t immediately improving the team, you are making them worse (it would still be the right thing to do).
