I would laugh if Canucks will burn all their capspace they work so hard to create to just go full Benning and waste it on a longterm deal on JT Miller. He is a great player today but it smells louie Eriksson all over again..

How many of the current top 150 scorers are 33 and over?

A whopping... 15. Not all forwards. Including all-time greats like Kane, Bergeron etc.

This contract would be a disaster in about three years. This is at the root of the NHL's financial dilemmas.

If it's for 2-4 years sure (he's worth more than 8.5 at his current performance), but if its for term I'd rather trade Miller. Too many examples across the NHL where long term contracts going late into the 30s turn out to be absolute boat anchors.

As good as Miller's been this year, I have a strong feeling that Vancouver is going to regret a deal like that a lot sooner than they think.

Zibanejad is a year younger than Miller will be when he begins his deal. He's put up the big numbers for a little longer than Miller has, and I think he plays a style likely to age a little better than Miller.

I think that it depends on where the team is. JT Miller definitely wants to secure the bag.

$8.5m is 10% of the cap, and is the equivalent to a $4.067m/yr deal back in 2005/2006 when the cap was introduced.
For reference at that time, Todd Bertuzzi made $5.269m, Naslund made $6m, and Brendan Morrison made $3.2m.

I was accidentally looking at his old contract on Capfriendly, but my point remains: $8.5 million is fine for JT for 4-5 years but after that it gets sketchy.

I don't think the players would go for that. But maybe some kind of compromise to reduce them. I'd say, no more than half the value of the whole contract and half of any given year can be signing bonuses. That would be fair, IMO.

It's also possible that the owners simple don't care, since some other player is getting that money any way, per the 50/50 split.
