If all it took was a player like Miller to get 2OA there would be many trades.

when was the last t8me a known 2OA pick was traded outright for a player?

Off the top of my head, Milbury and the new Islanders owners wanted a rapid turnaround and dealt #2 (Jason Spezza), Bill Muckalt, and an unproven Zdeno Chara for a prime Alexei Yashin.

Devils could certainly use a guy like Miller, but giving up the #2 pick doesn't seem like the way to go.

If we consider what the devils really needs i'd argue that they might consider the 2OA for Demko just from a pure "we need a goalie" standpoint.
Goalies don’t have that kind of value, even goalies of Demko’s talent, too pairing D does

Jesus only on HF is a draft pick worth more than a 99 point forward in his prime. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Team control and age matters, if the pick is traded it would be for a younger player.

Plus a real part of Miller’s trade value this off-season is that he makes 5.25m next season but that’s actually relatively meaningless to Devils next season.

I get why Vancouver fans would prefer that 2OA vs some package of lesser picks/prospects/younger players but they’re getting the latter.

And the Demko/Quinn stuff is just goofy, those players are obviously not going anywhere so why bother mentioning them.

NJD publicly expressed they are ready to be competitive and are open to trading their 1st round pick. This was of course when they thought they were drafting around 5th instead of 2nd.

However, lets just humor the idea that NJD hasnt changed their stance and are tired of always drafting high and want to be competitive now and not risk the reality of having their core grow into a losing culture.

What would a a trade look like with the foundation of Miller ( extended) for 2nd OA pick.

NJD and Canucks (Miller) were linked to many many reports of trade talks between the 2 franchises this year.

Miller, 29 yrs old is an Alpha leader that plays with an edge and I can see him being the perfect type of player to lead the young skilled NJD core.

To Van
2nd OA

to NJD
MIller - extended

Who adds and what are those additions.
Fans won't even look at the extended part . I still would say no from NJD point of view unless it is Demko in there

Demko + Miller extended to NJD
2nd OA + Blackwood to Vancouver

NJD may have to make a small add but much more fair than Miller for the 2nd OA considering where NJD are at in their rebuild and what Miller contract will look like .

You may be in for a surprise when he’s traded. 1 year of 5 million for a 100 point forward that has experience but isn’t 30 yet is one of the most valuable assets you can trade. Not saying he’ll get or is worthy of the 2nd pick however if you saw how hard he carried the team this year your opinion may change.

He just had a career year way beyond his career numbers and is about to demand a giant contract. All the reasons Vancouver would deal him is why everyone in every Miller thread is saying “that’s too much”. Like, we aren’t all idiots just like y’all are not idiots for not rioting in the streets about not bringing back a “99 point power forward”.

And if there’s any GM you want to emulate, it’s Mike Milbury.

The closest we've seen a known high pick traded outright and was renecnt was NYR Stepan + Raanta for ARZ 7th OA pick.

Why the hell would Vancouver move Demko though? He’s signed for 4 more years at 5m and the goalie market is wretched. They clearly plan on competing within that timeframe and he’s elite.

It’s one of their best contracts (if not the best), they aren’t going to move Demko for a better Miller deal if there were multiple bidders for him at the TDL. Just get the most for Miller without sacrificing something else, it’s not complicated.

w/ 1 more year left until UFA
to a team that isn't a contender
at a position they don't need

And sorry, 30 isn't prime for Fs.

VAN should keep him and trade their #1 pick for a really good offensively inclined LD. That would be equally as silly.

GMs just never learn and hand out bad contracts for too much and too long. Hyman is giving a great year but the 7 yr deal is going to kill them cap wise. Even if they are lucky to get 4 good yrs from Hyman the last 3 will hurt. Same with RNH 3-4 good years then 4-5 bad years.

New Jersey < Miller, Boeser, Myers (50% retained)

Vancouver < #2 pick, Bahl, Foote, Stillman, Tatar, Johnsson

Devils get a major upgrade to their top 6 without parting with any of their prized prospects, they also add a veteran RD at half his cap hit to replace Subban

Canucks land the 2nd overall pick, plus a nice haul of prospects who have the potential to develop into solid contributors in the years to come

The logic of a team that is drafting 2nd OA trading the pick for a 30 year old winger just isn’t there. They’re picking 2nd OA because they’re a young rebuilding team.

Right now Miller’s value is that of a player with 1 year left on a UFA contract. I don’t know what his value is if he’s extended but it’s still not something a team picking in the top 5 should trade for.

Devils long term wing depth:

Bratt (once extended)
Mercer
Slafkovsky (potentially)
Holtz
Sharangovich
Wood
Gritsyuk (KHL Rookie of the year)
Zetterlund
Stillman
Foote
Thompson
Clarke

Guys like Miller and Fiala just aren’t necessary imo.

Trading a 2nd overall for any impending UFA would be stupid, no matter how good they are.

The team was bad enough that they're selecting 2nd overall. A JT MIller is not going to be enough of a difference maker in one season to ever make that trade worthwhile.
