In your opinion, what do you see as the big differences between Garett Sparks and Joe Woll?

Winners win losers lose .. and big time players make big time plays in big time games .. this is why I have told you guys I am really excited about Woll .. da kid is a big time player who has excelled when games matter most his whole life .. a tender who can be great just continues to make every save until game is won and we move on to next round .. Soup even though we all love him, da guy is infectious, bottom line when it mattered most he gave up a house league goal in game 7 .. my gut tells me he will again .. I think you will see Woll carry team in playoffs which is what we need most of all
You can have the icyiest of veins, but you will still have nerves for certain milestones. Last year was Campbell's first playoffs. You could see the nerves in game 1. He was pretty much perfect for games 2-4. Game 5, first elimination game, again, you could see the nerves. Game 6, again he was great, but the team let him down. And then first game 7, nerves. I don't see it happening again.

In your opinion, what do you see as the big differences between Garett Sparks and Joe Woll?
Simple positioning and skating ability. Sparks has very poor lateral mobility which caused him to overplay cross ice passes. He still found a way to make most saves, but the rebounds and constantly losing his balance were red flags even in his first game.

One of the things that frustrated me most about Sparks was how a good sized goaltender could make himself looks small so often.. small goalies have to figure out how to play bigger than their size.. big goaltenders have a built in advantage but if you squander it with poor technique... you won't last at the top level... you get found out.

Never thought I'd see this

Curious to know if his AHL stats are a true reflection or if it's a case of playing behind AHL players. I admittedly haven't been paying close attention to the Marlies the last few years but none of their goalies have very good stats, hence my question. He looked really shaky in his first start(understandably), but looked much more poised in his 2nd start. It was against a decimated Islanders lineup, but they still had some good chances.

But he's been outperformed by his battery mates behind those same AHL players so his weak play was likely on him. Are there factors outside of raw talent that can derail a guy for a couple of seasons like that? Who knows? Its easier to watch him show us if its possible than to worry about how he can do it. Nice game tonight and lets keep it going Joe!

Some goalies playing better at the NHL level than the minor level is a real phenomenon, and I can't even guess at why. I've completely given up on saying anything concrete about goalies, they make no sense.

My comment in so far as I can make one is that he seems prone to overplaying but is right on the cusp of a solid, quiet blocking style. I thought his motions before the shots were a little jittery, but after the puck left the stick he was content to just let it hit him and stay in front of the rebound, and that's to his credit.

I got mocked for saying Woll had the best toolbox in our system, and yess including Campbell.

Doesn't mean he's the best goalie. Just he has the best blend of size, technique and athletic ability.

Neither Campbell nor Mrazek nor Freddy makes that cross crease save in the 3rd. He is incredibly explosive.

Again - don't get me wrong - doesn't mean he's a better goalie than any of those guys. But he has the tools if he can put it together.

Keep in mind Jonas Gustavsson had a great toolbox as well. Case study of having tools doesn't mean you will be able to build a wall.

I mean has he really though?

Kaskisuo had a .894 once Moore took over. Woll had a .870. Keep in mind that Kaskisuo had a .914 before Moore arrived. Both goalie's save percentages dropped 20 points once Moore took over. Of course .890 is not great either, but he had promise at least.

He took a notable leap in his second year. Cut down on the shaky games and reduced the number of bad goals, but they still happened a little more than you would like. Got better as the year wore on, regardless of what the stats may say. He had a .892, while D'Agostino (his main battery mate) had a .890. So Woll actually did better. 12 games were played by miscellaneous goalies. 6 games by VV and Hutch were better than Woll, 6 games between Scott, Andersen, and Redmond were much worse. In general, there were not too many pretty save percentages on that team.

It is still too early to tell this year. Woll had an .895 in three games (one great game, one solid game, and one bad game), which is better than Hutch's 6 games with a .894 (mostly driven by his three most recent games where he has given up a ton of goals) but worse than Kallgren's 8 games with a stellar .924. Kallgren had a couple of shaky games to start the year, which account for both of his losses, but he has been stellar since then.

All in all, after watching dozens of Marlies games with Moore in charge, our defensive structure is a mess. It is like watching the Carlyle Leafs, except there is a lot more potential to be a competent two-way club.

Maybe I am wrong here but a mentor like Campbell in net is likely a really good thing for this kid. Woll was highly touted coming out of Boston College and really hasn’t done much on some terrible Marlies team. Hopefully this stretch with the big club builds his confidence and renews his drive to become a better goalie. I would not feel comfortable going into the playoffs with Campbell and Woll but I also don’t believe Mrazek is the answer either.

Good post, they look the same in the net but Woll seems to be more calm? Sparks would over play the puck like he had a soccer net behind him

I would agree.

Sometimes the NHL is easier for the goalie because systems are better defined, individual talent is a hell of a lot higher so the one on one becomes more of a challenge but if they are in a 5 on 5 situation and your system has not broken down, you should be able to make the save. You know where your guys are supposed to be so you trust them to have your back, where the AHL its just a bunch of guys either developing or not good enough for the NHL. They are not as reliable to be where they are supposed to be.

Sparks has issues reading the play and would jump around in the crease and make saves the hard way, or as his supporters said 'athletic' saves.
Woll is solid positional and reads the play better. His reaction time is improving so he is able to close the holes faster which nodes will fit him becoming an NHL goalie

I would agree with you, I think most of the posters here have the same "read" on Woll.

I think a 3 game sample size is what props Woll up.
Goalies are voodoo to some degree but rarely do goalies substantially outperform their minor league stats which suggests a sub .900 for Woll.
As a backup NHL goalie I only care about Ws and Ls and you can't beat 3-0.

I would love to be wrong but lets check back this time next year for his progress.
