Joseph freaking Woll

His athletic talent is obvious to see, but he's one of the more jumpy goalies they've had in a while.

He can make both hard saves and easy saves look difficult.

This generations James Reimer. Can get hot for stretches but there's always something holding them back from being a viable #1 option. He also reminds me of Reimer quite a bit in terms of playstyle.

No way I don’t see it
Woll's more athletic, but he has that same tendency of playing small in his net at times and suspect puck tracking ability.

In any case their career arcs thus far are quite similar.

Tbh, I'm not really a fan. I think he's overrated amongst many Leaf fans and the perception doesn't match the reality of what he's been thus far in his career.

Your opinion makes sense then cause last year his comparable was price now your saying it’s Reimer that’s two different playing styles I would more say he plays Bernier if you wanted to chose an ex leaf comparable and even that’s nuts

Man this place is unbearable sometimes, we're doing revisionist history where Woll apparently always lets in back breaking goals and his comparable is James Reimer LOL jesus christ guys step off the damn ledge. He's not at his best but he IS a good goalie and there's a reason Treliving invested in him.

Also, Stolarz from game 3 of the Ottawa series onwards was rocking an .877 sv% and let in multiple weak goals where he completely fell asleep. The team still got it done, but it's not like Stolie was lighting the world on fire.

I was talking to 1 of my buddies last night after the game and I usually don't agree with every take he has Leafs wise. But, he was bang on the money with what he said.

We were talking about Stolarz and Woll and what the difference is between the 2 and he mentioned how it's not just that Stolarz is a better goalie, but, it's the intangibles as well. It's the fact that Stolarz has that "IT" factor about him whenever he's in net and he has alot more "Dog" in him and Woll simply doesn't. And he's absolutely right about that.

Because look at that exchange Stolarz had with Greig in the 1st round against Ottawa. He was hacking his legs and pushing him constantly and threw a hip check and knocked him into the net. And as a matter of fact Greig was actually being a shit before that exchange. And then he miraculously calmed and mellowed down after that.

And then you look at Woll. Look at when Gudas yelled in his face 2 years ago after that series clinching goal in game 5. And he did absolutely nothing about it. If he did that to Stolarz, there would have probably been no handshake line after that series because there would have been a brawl. LOL.

I can't believe I never thought of this. But my friend was absolutely right when he was describing the difference between the two.

To me, I think Woll has 1 more chance to prove himself tomorrow night.

I think if he shits the bed again tomorrow night and we lose and Stolarz isn't ready for game 5 then I think Berube has to very strongly consider starting Murray if he's avaliable and recovered from the flu.

He wasn't great last night, but he was probably average, he had no shot on most of the fluky goals that went in, he was certainly nowhere near as bad as some seem to think, he was no worse then the 10 million dollar guy at the other end of the rink and the loss is not on him. He had a .964 SV% last playoffs, he had a pretty good season, just pathetic and embarrassing that so many so called fans are throwing him under the bus today as if he was a piece of garbage, and not an important part of our team.

Some of you people have the memory of a goldfish and have forgotten how Woll played like an all-star in game 2, if not for that the series would have been tied 1-1. Hoping for a big game from him tomorrow night. GLG!!

He was sub-par last night for sure and I'm betting he'd say that himself. And it still took them two real unlucky goals to beat us. I'm still zero percent worried about him.

He's been fine-ish. Could have been tighter last night and probably would have won if that was the case. Need him to have a strong end to the series.

He was not even close to average dude. He f***ing sucked ass.

We would be up 3-0 if he was average.

So many deflections from playing a system where you try to block everything, it is bound to happen occasionally.

He has still played poorly and needs to step it up, but a lot of bad bounces too.

The starting goalie was also playing like a "clear backup".
I don't know about playing like a "clear backup" but you're right in suggesting he wasn't playing up to his regular season standard. Even so, given that league average for goalies this season is around .900, we can say that he's been playing like an average goalie, not playing like a "clear backup" as you suggest. That's just nonsense.

Who would you rather have in net, the goalie who this past season had a record of 21-8-3 with a GAA of 2.14 and a SV% .926 or the real backup Woll with a record of 27-14-1 with a GAA of 2.73 and SV% .909? Stolarz still has a 2.19 GAA and .901 SV% compared to real backup Woll 3.99 GAA and .869 SV%.

So tell me, who is the clear backup in reality who is playing like a clear backup? Woll was slightly above average this season and has been well below average in the playoffs. I contend it will be difficult to win this series if he continues his penchant of allowing soft goals, having trouble tracking pucks, and generally looking shaky and unbalanced in the crease.

Woll going east-west loses his net too often. Florida hasnt exposed it yet but Woll can end up outside his post with half of his body, then has to recover. Second issue is puck handling skills, hesitates to make decisions with a rimmed puck, tough time settling it, was almost caught handling the puck in the trapezoid. Florida will be going after Wolls puck skills even more in Game 4.

Woll will do us just fine until Stolarz can be back next round. He's got this. A lot of those goals last night were fluky or seeing eye pucks.

He knows his mission and with every game he will get a lot better. Best backup of the remaining teams, if anybody else had their #1 go down they'd be fuc*Ed.

GO LEAFS GO
