This was the epitome of a fair deal all around. It hurts in both directions and each side can point to something as a win so…….

Hurricanes retain a player that BrIndy for sure wants here. And they got him at an AAV that is something they can live with…. Less than $3m per season with how much the cap is expected to go up will be like a 1.5m deal in todays dollars. we basically have our Paul Stastny 4th liner contract for the next couple years and it is a very well known quantity of player. We bring back a player and show we can retain the guys we want to keep. But we got the right salary. Add high energy and heavy players with Staal and we will have options to roll the fourth line in different situations. We can’t have an entire roster of super duper discount contracts. We used to pay him $6M and now seemingly will pay him less than half that. We can still put together a competitive roster. This doesn’t throw our cap off. We can work around this if he really does tank it. He is going to be paid less than PoolParty was paid this year…. We will be ok..

Staal got 4 years term and basically plans to retire here as a Hurricane With all the no movement clauses I’m sure are involved. He conceded on AAV to get the longer term. I have no doubt he could have gotten higher AAV but shorter term on the open market even with tight cap this off season. He is slowing down but there is a ton of respect in the league for how many minutes he plays in a shutdown role… so he pushed and got the term to basically run him up to retirement most likely

Maybe not full NMC if the trade clause bit is the final point they are fiddling with.

For those curious how much the Canes could frontload this contract here’s my rough napkin math for maximum front loading.

4x$2.9m = $11.6m total

year 1: $3.8m
year 2: $3.2m
year 3: $2.3m
year 4: $2.3m

methodology for front loaded contracts:
- year to year change can’t exceed 25% of year 1.
- lowest year can’t be less then 60% of the highest year.

That makes the most possible front loaded contract:
Year 1 100%
Year 2: 85%
Year 3: 60%
Year 4: 60%

total 305%, but four years is 400% in total, so we divide 400%/305% = 1.31x to average out the contract multiplied by the % each year.

Year 1 = $2.9m * 100% * 1.31 = $3.8m
Year 2 = $2.9m * 85% * 1.31 = $3.2m
Year 3 and 4 = $2.9m * 60% * 1.31 = $2.3m per season.

Honestly, I'd have preferred we just moved on at this term/cost combination.

But Rod loves the guy and it was never going to happen. This is our version of a bad contract, and honestly, it's not terrible at all. Hopefully he can keep going.

Very happy with this. For all the hand ringing that goes on over Staal I think he is the heart and soul of this team and I'm not ready to find out what happens without him. 4 years, dudes in great shape. He is Rod's on ice persona in 4 years he will still be in great shape and will still be playing pretty close to the same level

Anyone who really thinks Rod will EVER make this guy a 4th liner, hasn't been paying attention.
Ok with the money but that term....woof.
And that is my biggest reason for disliking this deal. He’ll be a 4C but RBA will never not go to the Staal well. He is his security blanket. Aho didn’t get a PK opportunity until staal was hurt.

This also blocks young guys coming in once Staal is playing like a 4C but still getting played like he’s higher up. It’s great for this year if you think we need what he brings to win.

Personally I think ten years was a good enough shot for him to win here and that some of what he brings gets over rated in terms of us not being to replace it. Maybe all of it. Four years just is no good for me personally, and not because of cap things. I was fine with two because you knew it was going to be at least two….so it was going to be three. Four?

Let it goooooooo…..let it goooooo….

See, I think this deal is a very good one. AAV is where it needs to be, and the term is not bad if you look at it as Staal being our future Stastny and/or Stephan. So if Rod over slots him, is that Staal’s fault or the managements fault for a good contract, or is it Rod’s fault?
