As I said elsewhere, term awful, AAV good (kept calling for $3 max). At least if the cap does rise as expected, this is nothing even if/when he ends up on the fourth line. I still don't love what this means for our roster and line construction, but I can live with it.

Meh...

The 4 year term is clearly to keep the cap hit down. But less than 3 mill seems fine. Probably will front load it salary wise in the worst case scenario we have to buy him out in 2-3 years.

Keeping the cap hit under $3M is likely viewed as a win for Carolina. In exchange, the Canes clearly think that Jordo's plus-plus defense is going to be an ageless commodity like Brent Burns, but only time will tell on that front.

Don’t like this deal at all.

If anything, this shows that the Canes are willing to take risks with certain players who they think have valuable and ageless aspects to their game. They already somewhat proved this by acquiring a 37 year old Burns, who has a contract running until he's 40!

I don't think the borg and Rod mind older players as long as they remain dedicated to their craft, i.e. working out in the offseason, taking care of your diet, remaining committed to being the best hockey player and person you can be. Burns and Staal are pretty much the quintessential Canes in those regards despite their age.

Burns is physical specimen. While staal is still effective he had slowed down each of the last 3 years and it will only get worse. He will be a 4C as early as 24-25 and now we have a 3 million 4c for another 3 seasons. We need to improve our top 6 / top 9

Like the AAV, that term f***ing sucks though. After 2 years he's probably gonna be a slow 4C who can't keep up and sucking up $3M cap. Guess we're counting on the cap going up quite a bit? And NTC so we'll be stuck with it too

Is this not a physical specimen:

It's hard to imagine Staal getting any slower. His hands might get worse if possible but that's about it.

We kind of tied our own hands with the Kotkaniemi contract. He was locked into our future #2 center as soon as the ink dried on his new contract and we let Trocheck go. Luckily for us KK is showing signs of growing into that role. But still, hard to imagine finding a better and cheaper #3 center than Staal at his current price. Younger, maybe but better and cheaper no.

I actually really like it. 4 years is more than I'd like but I think he'll be worth that cap hit throughout the contract for his possession, defense and PK alone.

Also, I think the team views Staal as a core player and I would view him as a core player too. First core player that we've had come up to UFA and we kept him with no issues. Bodes well for Aho/Slavin staying here for life.

Koko came on last year and I'm still super excited about his development into being a clear legit 2C, but that said I'd really love to hedge that bet by getting another elite winger to hopefully add to healthy Svech and Necas/Jarvis continuing to develop. Koko is a great player and I really like his contract but unless he does take another jump forward as a scorer he needs some skilled offensive players on his wing for that line to have the ideal success we need to get over the hump in the playoffs. Maybe it could come from our current young guys, but we have the assets and aggressive management to try to find a proven big fish out there.
