I am just responding to the rumor that he is going to be moved. I understand the need for some teams to get bigger and meaner. I think the Oilers do too. However a talented defenseman who comes available for a 2nd and who is a right hand shot is a pretty nice asset to have, even if Bowman signs Murphy.

Currently the Oilers have on the right side:

Bouchard
Murphy (Unsigned)
Emberson

Having Spence back there, perhaps instead of Emberson but who can move into a top 4 role would be a smart move to me.

Completely an utterly unappealing for Ottawa.

Of course the Oilers would love a 2nd pairing RH PMD for a 2nd, but I'm confident in saying there's no world where that happens.

SJ would be smart to get him.

Dumb move by Ottawa, he was the main reason they made the playoffs with the Chabot and Sanderson injuries. He stepped up big time

I think most Sens fans (myself included) want him on the 3rd pair (with Kleven) but are slightly open to trading him for a defensive Dman upgrade to play with Chabot or Sanderson.

If he goes for futures, I doubt any of us will be happy tbh. He's be a good pickup for most teams if the price isn't too high.

He's not a #1 PP QB type of guy, but he can do fairly well running a second unit.

He's good but the Senators likely wouldn't get back much more than they paid for him a year ago. They're looking to move him because he's arb eligible and a UFA after next year, but that is what will really hurt his value.

I think they could probably get like a 2nd and 3rd back for him, but that feels about the max.

He's the middle pairing RD the Sharks are looking for. I'd go as high as our 2nd rounder (62 OA) and Haltunnen for him.

Sharks fans on our board will hate it because he isn't the Jolly Green f***ing GIant. But I don't care. Don't tell me size is worth a damn when Marty St. Louis is a literal HOFer.

If he gets more than a 2nd, one projected to be in the later half of the 2nd id be shocked.

Like a 2nd and a 3rd if that was offered thr Sens should take that and run.

Assuming they can get another RHD as they dont want to bring Jensen back. I'm assuming

I dunno, there seems to be a consensus. Call it a 2nd and a mid prospect? I'd be happy if the Oilers did that considering the question marks on their back end this off season.

Frankly, the consensus from fans on a message board who are trying to get the best imaginary trade for their teams have no bearing on reality.

The Senators are under multiple pressure points to win and win in a hurry and trading their current #4 who at times last season was their #1/#2 for a draft pick isn't going to help them in the slightest. I'd be shocked (like, eat a literal hat shocked) if he was moved for a 2nd. Frankly, I'm not sure why they would accept anything less than a 1st + 3rd which is the range a team would likely have to offer-sheet him at that Ottawa wouldn't match.

A three person consensus on theoretical value with no consideration of team need does not validate your proposal.

Of course it doesn't. You and The Devilish Buffoon also don't have any real idea of what the trade will look like IRL. Neither do I. We are all just speculating. I just posted the other comments to show I didn't come up with an offer in a vacuum.

It is very rare for anyone on here to nail a trade.

Fair enough. I tend to take the opinions of fans who have seen a bunch of the player over fans who have (likely/presumably) seen a lot less. I also tend to take into account what they say their teams needs are when offering a trade and you've got two Sens fans here (and a bunch more on the Sens board) who will give you a bunch of reasons why a pick doesn't make sense.

We're all just screaming into the void though, you won't get an argument from me there. I don't even have a strong opinion on what a trade will end up looking like, just on what it won't look like.

Yup, screaming into the void sounds about right.

I certainly feel that way when watching the Oilers stumble their way through this past season and current off season.

Kesselring trade sets the floor for RD at a 2nd rounder.

Given how the last season played out for each of them, you have to imagine Spence's value is quite a bit higher. You get an extra year of control with Spence as well, whereas K is UFA next July.

IMO pick #39 for Spence is a pretty fair deal straight up. With Letang's age and Karlsson being a pending UFA, I think the Penguins could make a lot of sense to offer that.

Honestly it's good value but I don't think the Sens (or their fans at least) want a pick in return for Spence. They want a similar-level RD that's more defensive, or an upgrade with a plus attached to Spence.

My thought was that based on Garrioch's report, they wanted to sign someone like Murphy to replace Spence and then just sell Spence.

This would give them this defense:

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Murphy
Kleven-Mateychuk
Matinipalo

Which feels like it makes a lot of sense on paper.

I don't think Murphy is a top 4 replacement. 33, showed signs of slowing down this year, had his minutes cut to 17. So they would still need someone to replace Spence.

Spence is just 25, he's going to get better, and play 20+minutes.

I think Shea would be a better Spence replacement than Murphy. Nevermind, Shea's a Lefty.

Trouba would be a great fit if he is willing to go play in Canada.

I think the idea there would be Mateychuk would develop into the Spence replacement and they're getting Murphy as a much better complement for Chabot in the short term. I figure Kleven-Mateychuk is their 3rd pair for now but hopefully develops into their 2nd pair in the long run.
