What is Ottawa looking to get back?

I would imagine the Penguins would have interest in him if he was truly available.

Important context:
Let’s make this clear: This doesn’t mean Steve Staios, the club’s president of hockey operations and general manager, is trying to deal Spence. But that possibility shouldn’t be ruled out because all options are on the table with all 32 teams trying to make changes.

This could also be just part of the negotiating process.

I think if they can parlay Spence into a good, big, physical, defensively stout RHD, they will do so.

But there's no world in which Spence is dealt without a top 4 RHD coming in to fill the void, be it directly or indirectly.

In an ideal world, I think Ottawa would sign Spence to a mid-term deal while also acquiring a 4/5 RHD who is a better stylistic fit with Chabot, like Whitecloud. A bottom 4 of Chabot-Whitecloud, Kleven-Spence, where the "bottom 3" all 16-19 minutes every night, depending on need and special teams, seems like the ideal scenario.

Sens probably don't value a player like him enough to pay him the 4-5M he'll demand on a medium term deal, even if he's absolutely deserves it based on his play.

They were going after Paryako (refused to waive his NTC to come to Ottawa) and Ristolainen at the deadline, but does it make sense to deal Spence for a 2nd/3rd to trade a 1st+ for someone like that just because they fit a bit better?

My guess is that they try to sign a guy like Peeke or Murphy in free agency. If that fails, perhaps they take Spence to arbitration and walk him to UFA with a 1 year deal.

If we can get Kovacevic to waive, would Kovacevic for Spence be a good basis for a deal? NJ need to obviously add here IMO.

Dillon is cheaper but LD so prob doesnt work

He's good but the Senators likely wouldn't get back much more than they paid for him a year ago. They're looking to move him because he's arb eligible and a UFA after next year, but that is what will really hurt his value.

I think they could probably get like a 2nd and 3rd back for him, but that feels about the max.

I’d rather retain Spence but adding Kovacevic by other means would be nice.

Kinda doubt he would waive to come here, though
