If you can make the team better then trade almost anyone I guess - but trading a guy you got last year in a steal of a trade who then outperforms every expectation sure would be a choice…

Spence can flat out play.

If Edmonton moves Nurse in some kind of other trade I would not be upset if they wrangled Spence from Ottawa.

They need a decent 2nd PP unit in the rare event the 1st unit doesn't score, and a good RHD/LHD when Jake Walman goes down to injury.

He's good but the Senators likely wouldn't get back much more than they paid for him a year ago. They're looking to move him because he's arb eligible and a UFA after next year, but that is what will really hurt his value.

I think they could probably get like a 2nd and 3rd back for him, but that feels about the max.

How does a 2nd round pick straight up sound?

IMO guy is a stud and just getting started in terms of what he can do. He's truly in elite company when you look at his stats. Yes, some will say he's sheltered, but even against the "sheltered" D men he's on another level.

I don't really get the reason they'd tried to move off of him after how well he played this last season. Basically got the team into the playoffs. Every d-man on the Sens had their best numbers when playing with Spence (including Sanderson).

However, the contract demands from Spence may be high. Sens may be concerned about whether he can do this long-term.

He's got 2 years to UFA, which means any deal needs to be 3 years minimum. Otherwise 2-years walks him to UFA, 1 year deal means Spence can go to arbitration next year and get 1 year deal to get right to UFA.

Going to arbitration this year also puts Ottawa in a tough spot because both 1-year and 2-year deals are risky due to the above.

I wonder if a team may try to offer sheet him. You can offer 4.7m and try to get him for a 2nd round pick. But ottawa probably matches that and kicks the can down the road.

If you really want to put ottawa in a bind you could offer in the mid-5's on a 4 year deal and only pay a 1st + 3rd.

If you think he's a 2nd pairing RD, then that's an amazing value and very low cost to acquire. Ottawa might be kicking tires because they don't want to get caught in a jam.

The Benoit/Andrae trade out of Philly means it's unlikely Philly will let Risto go for any deal involving Spence.

I'm not sure it'd matter much one way or another, but if anything swapping a 5'9 puckmover for a 6'4 defensive D would make it more likely that Philly could fit Spence on their roster.

Still doubt they'd be interested though with Sanheim, York and Drysdale already.

They apparently moved him because they wanted to get bigger. If that's true, they aren't going to trade one small guy for a big guy, and then immediately trade a much better big guy for a smaller guy.

They'd be trading for a much better small guy, and it's possible they wanted to get bigger in case someone steps up and offers them what they want for Ristolainen (1st+ I imagine).

He's the middle pairing RD the Sharks are looking for. I'd go as high as our 2nd rounder (62 OA) and Haltunnen for him.

Sharks fans on our board will hate it because he isn't the Jolly Green f***ing GIant. But I don't care. Don't tell me size is worth a damn when Marty St. Louis is a literal HOFer.
St Louis is a brick shithouse though.

Spence is a little twink

I truly think the only way he gets moved is in some roundabout way to get better up front and bigger on D.

Spence for an F (McMichael? McCann with an extension?) and then picks for Whitecloud or something. Let’s them run with:

Forward X - Stutzle - Batherson
Tkachuk - Cozens - Grieg
Foegele - Pinto - Amadio
Giroux - Halliday - Zetterlund
Cousins

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Whitecloud
Kleven - Yakemchuk
Matinpalo

Ullmark
UFA Goalie

If he gets more than a 2nd, one projected to be in the later half of the 2nd id be shocked.

Like a 2nd and a 3rd if that was offered thr Sens should take that and run.

Assuming they can get another RHD as they dont want to bring Jensen back. I'm assuming

i’m just not seeing it. this is the briere quote:

For us, the tough part with Emil was that we also have Cam York and Jamie Drysdale, who are maybe smaller-stature defensemen. When you have to play all three in the same lineup, it is probably not ideal. We were trying to get a little bigger. Simon Benoit brings us a little snarl and size on the defense.

what top 4 RD are they getting, that’s better than spence, for a 2nd and a 3rd?

trade makes no sense

Completely and utterly unappealing, unless we magically get two good middle pair RHD elsewhere and just no longer have room for Spence.

I am just responding to the rumor that he is going to be moved. I understand the need for some teams to get bigger and meaner. I think the Oilers do too. However a talented defenseman who comes available for a 2nd and who is a right hand shot is a pretty nice asset to have, even if Bowman signs Murphy.

Currently the Oilers have on the right side:

Bouchard
Murphy (Unsigned)
Emberson

Having Spence back there, perhaps instead of Emberson but who can move into a top 4 role would be a smart move to me.

SJ would be smart to get him.

Dumb move by Ottawa, he was the main reason they made the playoffs with the Chabot and Sanderson injuries. He stepped up big time
