Guys like Kane and Nurse and to a lesser extent Kassian help change that narrative, even if it isn't quite deserved. Binngton isn't going to help with that. We already have a surly goaltender in Smith.

That is true, he is pretty surly lol.

Yeah, I didn't expect this thread to go well.

According to oilers fans here, Barrie is a huge asset. I’ve read it countless times.
I have defended Barrie a number of times, but it has always been against people suggesting he has negative value and we will have to pay to dump him. That isn't the same as "Barrie is worth a ton", which I have never seen on this site.

No, we don’t want to trade him for Binnington though.

Binnington holds no value to the Oilers at this time. And if a team who has no one in goal next year aside from a creaky Smith and an unknown like Skinner isn't interested, no one else will be.

P.S. I am one of the people who thinks Barrie has some positive value. Basically this:
Even if Binnington did have value to Edmonton, it wouldn't be at the draft. It would be mid-summer when all free agent options have been spent. We aren't giving the Blues their cap space to sign Husso when we might want to sign Husso ourselves.

Well, he has won his past 4 starts while looking like his old self again. Small sample size of course, but he’s looked much better and more confident in net. Also helps that our defense has decided to actually show up in his starts.

Not solely blaming Covid either, but it really affected O’Reilly as well. He didn’t look like himself for about a month after getting it.
Binnington is getting paid based on his play prior to 2019-2022. In the last three years his sv% have been a very pedestrian .912, .910 and .904. And his playoff numbers are even worse. Over the same period Smith for the Oilers has sv% of .902, .923 and .913. Binnington has 5 more years left with a cap hit of $6M and $32M in real dollars to be paid with a full NTC for the next two years and a M-NTC after that. Unless he can show that he has returned to his earlier form for an extended period of time that contract is a massive red flag.

As an Oiler fan I'd rather take a chance next year on Smith having one more year in the tank than risking that Billington contract which would also make it impossible to resign Kane or to improve in any other area.

He is not a huge asset, he is also not an anchor either.

I’d trade him for a Defenseman with a different skillset and similar contract.

Think about

Adam Larsson
Joel Edmundston
Brendan Dillon
Nikita Zadorov

The Oilers are missing that big physical Defenseman right now.

Awful goalie on an awful contract, if this trade happen it will just be the nail in the coffin of any chance Mcdavid having success in Edmonton before he becomes a UFA

Is Binnington an asset? I don’t think so. He’s be awful this season.

So it’s one dubious contract for another.

Binnington's contract is a much, MUCH more bitter pill to swallow than Barrie's. Barrie is at least contributing. Massive differences in contracts make these two obviously dissimilar.

Is St. Louis open to retaining any salary? You might have interest from a few teams if his cap hit was lower. I understand isn't ideal though.
I would think the bare minimum anyone would accept would be $2 million retained. That puts him in high end backup/low end starter territory, which is where he's been the last couple of years.

Not sure anyone would want to touch that contract without some serious retention and sweeteners. St Louis has a far superior defensive team and he still has a 3.x GAA and almost a sub .900 save percentage

Awesome! I guess Husso will be available then in the off season. Holland should sign him. The Blues sound set long term with Binnington. :sarcasm:
Do Pilers have a 6x6 contract to hand out? Cause Husso Will be asking for Driedger Markstrom Binnington type of $ you know that right?

No thank you! Binnington probably has the worst goaltender contract in the league. Edmonton does not have the cap space to even afford him.

Most likely, Blues will dump Binnington maybe to a team like Buffalo/Arizona while adding futures.

Even with Binnington’s midseason struggles after getting Covid, I’d still take him over Smith/Koskinen.
As things are now, he's not an improvement over Smith/Koskinen, but I'd like to think that he's not washed up yet and might be a decent shot for the Oilers as they get their top goalie prospect Stuart Skinner much more games next year. Problem is with Binnington's long and expensive contract, if he sucks and ends up backing up Skinner or another goalie, then the Oilers are stuck with a guy they might not be able to move or have to buy out.

Honestly, can the Oilers afford Binnington next season even if they wanted him?
I suppose if they are sending out Kassian and Barrie it could work but despite what Oiler fans will say that will not be easy.
Easier then sending out Monahan and Lucic for sure.

Barrie at least has neutral value not negative value like the others.

Don't think the Oilers should use all their cap space on Binnington.

Rather go cheap on Holtby if the Oilers are going reclamation route.

I think I'd sooner take a chance on Charlie Lindgren than get buried under Binnington's contract. Seems very Matt Murray-esque.

I am not familiar with those discussions but I will say he has a lot of value and if we needed to trade him for space we could get something decent for him. Not A+ assets but maybe a 1st rounder. If Chiarot got what he got Barrie should get similar

A little sore at the idea of Edmonton getting a good goaltender, hey? No, I don't know what Husso's contract demands will be, and neither do you.
