this is bs, GMs have a lot of say in the first selection of the draft but then the scouts have more leverage in the later rounds when compiling their top list.

Rutherford literally had 1 first-round pick in his entire tenure in Pittsburgh. 2 picks in the top 50 (Poulin #21, Sprong #46).

Drafting success is driven by high picks. Pittsburgh's drafting was terrible because they had basically none of those.

He had lots of picks in Carolina and the record is not satisfactory

you quoted the wrong person

Looking at the behind the scenes draft videos, it doesn't seem like Rutherford is involved much if at all. I think Allvin, Clancey, Harvey, and Delorme (in that order) are the main guys.

Lekkerimacki is only 18 and is still years away from the NHL. Likely 2024/2025 . So let’s be a tad bit patient . Yes it sucks he is on the 4th line but I’m looking forward to watching him in the world juniors

They don't have enough time to scout with all their other duties running an NHL organization.

Someone said it well. GM has just enough time to scout to make him self dangerous. (As in dangerous to the process)

Keep in mind that there's rarely a consensus. The GM can still impact the draft in terms of draft philosophy though. For example, Allvin could have steered the discussion towards prioritizing players with "difference mak[ing] skill" rather than "compete level." The discussion could have been Lekkeramaki vs. Kemell.

To be fair, he did have a pretty good draft year. He scored 7 goals last year in swedens top league, in fact he actually outscored William eklund who was draft year + 1 at the time. But let’s hope he’s not one of those all out offensive guys that only thrives in Europe type of players. That would suck.

He has less goals than Myrenberg in the same league lol.

On the flip side the guys drafted around him (Ohgren, Ostlund, Kemell, Bischel) aren't doing that great

To call him a bust is just typical fan overreaction. Lets see how he does at the WJC and the second half of the season.

Its not like he is a player that was suppose to be 1/2 years away he was always a longterm project who still have 3-5 years of development ahead of him. I think fans here seem to forget because we ahve been rushing a lot of our top prospects lately that the average development time for a first round pick is 2/3 years and for prospects in general its 3-5 years

Honestly, taking a player you expect to be 5 years out at 15OA is probably even dumber than declaring that same player a bust 16 games after that draft.

Development not 5 years out of playing in the NHL. You can still develope while in the NHL, which a lot of our guys havent done

This Djurgårdens team just isn't very good offensively. Their top points producer is tied for 17th in PPG and outside of Brodin nobody is really scoring at an elite rate either. So any slump is likely to be magnified by not getting any fluke assists and not being set up for easy goals to break a scoring funk. It's rough to see him doing poorly to start his season, especially when it feels like all of our young players are struggling across every league but it's still early days yet. If he looks to struggle again next season then I vote we trade him and try to recoup value.

You're saying that the average first round pick ceases to develop as a player past age 20 or 21?

I feel like he’s a bust, looks like another Anton Rodin. We’ve seen so many development cycle over the years that we can just tell…

The Jensens, Gaunces, Gendurs, Rodins, Schroders, Juolevi, the list goes on.
