Trading Coyle or Zucker would be a ****ing huge mistake. I don't think GMCF is dumb enough to propose a deal around one of them for Bernier.

I think he'd have to be to get Bernier if Toronto's package was substantially better than Philly's supposed offer of Read. I don't think it'd be a smart move for them either, which is exactly why he should do it.

You know, I don't even get why the Wild are in the race.

They are probably just waiting for Backstrom's clan decision but it takes a lot of time it seems.

I think it's obvious Bernier is the backup plan in case they can't come to terms with Backstrom. The Wild's interest makes it obvious they don't trust Harding and don't think Kuemper is ready to carry the load for a playoff team just yet. Their interest makes sense for security reasons. Not much out there besides Bernier unless you want to pay MORE for a much older Luongo, who is also probably too expensive for you guys cap wise

Well, if it's for security reasons, Fletcher shouldn't even offer Coyle or Zucker. Why sacrificing the future? Just my opinion.

Maybe I'm underrating Bernier but I don't want to be the team to experience him as #1.

Because if they can't get Backstrom, they're screwed. Can't spend hundred plus million long term on two star players and then not have a goalie for them. If they can sign Backstrom, they have their number 1 and it give them time to see if Kuemper IS the number 1 guy in the future. But if they can't get Backstrom, Bernier is their security blanket AND their starter for the next 10-15 years. And in that case, you have to pay to play.

What about Devin Setoguchi?

Do you think there would be some interest?

Not unless you're eating cap space. Even then, please please please no. Please no....

Only guy worse to acquire from you guys is Heatley.

I'd love to get either Zucker or Coyle. However, like Fel said, I don't think Fletcher is dumb enough to give us one of them...... unless he really wants Bernier.

Could you please tell me how good Bernier really is?

Like I said earlier, I probably underrate him and that's because he doesn't play a lot.

I'd still rather have Read or sign Holloway to fill that hole over Frattin. I'm just not high on Frattin at all.

I would take Read over Frattin, but factoring in the draft pick and the fact that Read is UFA next year..that is the part that doesn't make the deal quite as good.

This is his nametag at social events

Really, really good. He's the type of goalie who will be good for a long time because of the style he plays. He's one of the best fundamental goalies you can see. He's not a butterfly goalie like most NHL goalies nowadays. He's so good at reading shots that he knows when to stand up and make the easier save that way. Good reads, VERY calm in the net, good rebound control. Athletic but obviously nowhere near the athletic level of Quick or Fleury. Not a good puck handler. Knows when to slow down the play and cover a puck. Good glove. Whoever gets him is getting a GREAT goalie. As a goalie myself, Bernier is a guy I love to watch because he's so technically sound.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Now I have another important question. Considering Backstrom has been so awful in the shootouts during his career, is Bernier any good in these situations?

Not a big deal--it's tough to 'rate' him because he hasn't played much. All signs point to a solid #1 tender though--he's just stuck behind Quick like just about any goalie in the league would be. That said, he's polar opposite in style--reserved/efficient in movement (top-3 I've ever seen in that regard) and just absolutely suffocates rebounds. Decent puckhandler, too. Cons are he doesn't have prototypical size--he's not tiny, but he's not a monster like many goalies are these days. That said, he carried the hell out of our team when Quick was hurt/struggling, so even in that small sample size, he was impressive.

I'd rate him right now better than Harding/Kuemper, and only slightly behind Backstrom if only due to lack of body of work.

(keep in mind I'm biased, but I think the above assessment is reasonable :P)

Leverage against Backstrom.

This is what I thought when I heard of Wild involvement. Just leverage. Because to be a better offer than what's reported from PHI and/or TOR, it would have to be something like Zucker or Coyle, too rich for Minny's blood for that risk.

Oh...Bernier might be worse than Jason Labarbera in shootouts. Like, laughably bad. I don't get it.

Not that good. In his one shootout this year, he went 0 for 3.

But to be fair, he hasn't been in many at the NHL level.

Bernier is one of the worst shootout goaltenders I've ever seen.

That's his major weakness.

I'd like to see you try to make it work without trading a core player. Gotta fill 8 roster spots with a little more than $7M.

In all honesty i'd probably move Stoll, put Richards as our 3rd line center. Stoll has been very good for us but his cap hit is getting up there. We have plenty of centers. Clutterbuck would be great on this team, 1.5 mill seems very unrealistic unfortunately.

It's funny how that works. The same is said about Quick, Luongo too. Then you have a guy like Garon who was virtually impossible to beat in shootouts (Dubnyk too), yet somehow they're not so stellar when it comes to regulation play.
