Seems like there are some people who feel that Gaudreau may not want to stay long term in Calgary. He's made comments on multiple occasions about how he'd one day like to play closer to home. Then Roger Millions made some interesting comments in a AMA.

I just wish I felt more confident about Gaudreau. In spite of all the talk I wonder what Johnny really wants. Does he want term? Does he want max dollars? Or does he want future flexibility. I really think the team and Johnny have a lot of work to do just to figure things out.

Think its a little more complicated that that..As I answered above.. I am very confident about Sean Monahan. I like his attitude. Had the pleasure of meeting his parents..he comes from real solid people. Finally, I have known Don Meehan his agent since the 1980's. He will get done. Johnny, I have a much different feeling. Not sure where he sits. What does Johnny really want? Is it money, is it term or does he want the flexibility to play as he sees fit. Hard Call

Obviously I take this all with a grain of salt, and everything is in all likelihood fine, but it's a bit weird that it sounds like they still haven't really figured out the basics of the deal. In the unlikely case where Gaudreau doesn't want to sign long term, what does Calgary do? Try and bridge him? Or would there be any thought to trade him while his value is high? If so, what could he return?

You want him specifically on the devils or any Eastern team?

I think it would be difficult to replace his offence, so i would expect a team to at least consider giving up a good winger.

2022 Cup to Calgary
1) Gaudreau never said he wants to be back home right away. When he talks about playing for the Flyers (and only the Flyers, BTW) he's talking about way down the road. In fact he's outright said he wants to play in Calgary for a long time.

2) Gaudreau is an RFA with no arbitration rights and no right to sign an offer sheet. He has zero leverage to force a trade.

3) If anyone out East still wants Gaudreau, that conversation stats with names like Eichel, Matthews, and Barkov.

I'm not saying Gaudreau would request or force a trade. I'm asking that if Johnny's only contract requirement is that it's a short deal, would Calgary consider trading him if he won't sign for 6+ years? Because Gaudreau does have some leverage . . . If they don't have him signed by October there's going to be an awful lot of questions.

It's a big if but if he did want to go to Philly it's hard to see something that works... Would have to be Provorov + Simmonds maybe? Hard to put value on a guy like Johnny. Philly fans probably lose their minds at that proposal.

Millions doesn't have any sources and JG has no leverage. He will sign a long term deal with the Flames.

Doesn't make sense for the leafs.

Though he's what they hope marner becomes, he would cost more than him.

From Philly my ask would be Brayden Schenn and one of Sanheim or Provorov. Probably add a draft pick too.

What teams have the assets and cap space to even make an offer for him? Toronto? Buffalo? Carolina?

What does Carolina have?

Calgary would need a similar forward in return unless it a top pairing young player. Otherwise Their defense is already comfortable for the forseeable future. Calgary needs forwards.

IF hypothetically we have to trade JG for some reason. B. Schenn + Provorov isn't a terrible offer.

I mean I wouldn't be happy with the trade but I see the value for sure. Elite winger for a near perfect #2C and a potential top pairing D? Thats nothing to scoff at.

Yuck.

Ghost to start with

Trading Gaudreau at all is a big "yuck" from me as well, but I don't think Gostisbehere would be a possibility at all.

Schenn is obviously a clear downgrade from Gaudreau but would still be a good 1st line LWer for us to help replace Gaudreau's loss, plus he has the added versatility of being able to play some center as well.

Either Provorov or Sanheim would become our #1 D prospect and we have some good ones. Either one would seriously push for an NHL roster spot as early as this fall.

That's a good return IMO, but like I said probably need a draft pick too.

Roger Millions is an idiot

Stay classy Adirondack.

If the Flames trade Johnny Gaudreau they might as well re build the rebuild. The term of his upcoming contract will tell a lot.

On one side, if Gaudreau didn't want Calgary, he could have just played his senior year, and then used the loophole to go wherever he wanted. Also, he has had some success in Calgary.

On the other side, using the college loophole would have been a terrible move financially. Gaudreau wouldn't be negotiating his second contract until next year or the year after. Travel is better in the East and so far Gaudreau hasn't been a good road player. I'd imagine endorsement deals in his hometown would be much more lucrative. And the Flames have been historically mediocre.

Maybe there is something to this. If there is, I'm sure Johnny Hockey would bring in a kings ransom in trade. Comparable to when the Flyers traded Carter and Richards.
