Not sure if it's been posted yet, but here a video of the guy facing the judge.

Sickening. He seems more annoyed than upset, like a damn narcissist.
People are making too much about the 1 minute video, when we have no idea of what has transpired before. I wish I wouldn't have to try to defend this scumbag, but here we go.

If he had 2 DUI’s this month then that is a major failure on the criminal justice center. If the guy wasn’t in jail he should have been in a court mandated rehab as most people will never get 1 DUI in their life let alone 2 in a month (now 3?). Is NJ that soft on drunk drivers? Pretty sure right over the bridge you are doing some jail time and definitely a suspended license for one

For major cities this makes sense. But, this is an exurban community, where expecting that type of infrastructure is likely unrealistic and not viable. The type of investment required to reduce car usage as the primay mode of transpertation is unlikely to happen.

Now, if you choose to drink at a local bar, and live in a place that is relatively isolated when it comes to public transportation, budget accordingly and take an uber.

As for them using the sidewalk. For little kids sure. If a biker hits me, unless I land terribly I'm likely to just have bruises and recover, if they hit my 73 year old mother or a small child, they could very easily kill them or give them life altering injuries. Cyclists don't get to pass risk on to pedestrians because they aren't comfortable on the road.
That's why cycling on sidewalks is illegal in most places.

Evil becomes you. It's not a disposition. It's not a maniacal personality. It's habits, repeated every day, until you become somebody you weren't before.

When I think of evil I think of Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacey, Jeffrey Dahmer, Eric Harris and Klebold.

People have phone addictions. Texting and driving. They're just as dangerous as drunk drivers. You got those people driving around killing people. Are they evil?

I don’t even know what to say about this…so tragic to lose two family members, while the family was gathered for a celebratory event, and one of them has a baby on the way. Taken away by an avoidable, senseless, selfish act.

The fact that you think evil = serial killers means you don't understand evil. Evil is boring. Banal.

Anybody who enslaves themselves to a vice is participating in evil. If you are so obsessed with your phone that you prioritize it over other people then yes, you are evil. A truck driver in Canada just smoked a family driving on the wrong side of the wrong because he was on his phone and couldn't be bothered to look where he was going. A virtuous person would not do that.

I did not see that reported - sounded like a few cars may have been involved.
In case you didn't see yet,

“Higgins attempted to pass the slower-moving sedan and SUV, entered the southbound lanes of travel, passed the slower-moving sedan, and attempted to re-enter the northbound lanes of travel when the SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes to safely pass the two pedal cyclists traveling north on the right side of the roadway,” police told PEOPLE.

“Higgins then attempted to pass the SUV on the right and struck the two pedal cyclists in the rear. As a result of the collision, the two pedal cyclists sustained fatal injuries.”

The guy in front of them slowed down and moved over for cyclists, and he took that opportunity to try to pass on the shoulder like a moron - mowing down the bikes in the process.

Clearly he drank to the point of alcohol mattering more to him than life itself.
Yes, and we've learned he had a prior DUI (someone said he had two this past month - is that true?).

That wasn't my point, however. I was replying to someone about his state of mind in court this morning, mentioning that he'll probably be haunted by this the rest of his life, as he should be.

It's tempting to invent an evil persona for this guy none of us know, but chances are he was a normal guy 24 hours ago who will now be haunted by a horrific decision for the rest of his life. His kids, his family and friends, and his conscience will always know he's the Guy Who Killed the Gaudreau Brothers. No matter what the legal decision is, he'll get no free pass. Nor should he.
True, but I have noticed the more someone does bad things, the more they ignore that "inner voice". And the things that are truly unforgivable; gives them even more reason to ignore that "side of themselves". Might not be "evil" but certainly broken beyond rehabilitation.

Stick him in solitary and let him think about what he's done for awhile.

Today is a sad day for the hockey world, I’ve been thinking about Johnny and Matthew all day.

Stick taps for the boys, you’ll be missed.
Rest in peace.

Let me just say, those guys I just mentioned were all calculating killers and evil doesn't just incorporate blood lusting killers. You can have evil people who don't purposefully go out killing.

Having a biological or otherwise obsessive compulsive ADDICTION doesn't make you evil. It means you have problems that sometimes are out of your control. I think evil implies, direct, malicious intent.

Does anyone actually have a link that confirms the driver had a previous DUI?

I will say that it takes 2-3 months after the day of a DUI for someone to go through the legal process of being convicted and going through a mandatory drug and alcohol prevention class. During the prevention class the person would go through an evaluation completed by a state licensed person. This licensed person would determine if the DUI driver must complete a rehabilitation program or not. In the mean time the DUI driver would have their license suspended. They would eventually have an interlock system (breathalyzer) installed in their car for a given amount of time when they get their license back.

This is just for a DUI, not one in which a person is killed. The process is similar once they get out of prison, but the court can make additional mandates.

Do some research before posting nonsense like this. Normal guys dont get drunk early Thursday evening, drive like a maniac, and take the lives of two human beings. This deadbeat deserves ZERO SYMPATHY and ZERO BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. He is a low-life and deserves to rot in prison followed by the deepest hottest level of hell.

I don't know what makes someone "normal" but drinking and driving is very, very common. Being drunk can also make people do things they wouldn't normally do.

Saying this guy was normal prior to the crash isn't giving him the benefit or the doubt or showing his sympathy at all. If anything, it shows why we need to be so careful about drinking and driving. It's so easy to just have a few beers and drive home, because you think you're fine. Then something like this happens, and all of a sudden it doesn't matter if you felt fine, all that matters is you were legally drunk, killed someone and now their family lost a loved one and you're going to spend many years in jail.

He probably was a normal guy before the crash. Most drunk drivers are.

If I'm having a beer I don't drive
While that's commendable, I'm not sure you understood the post. Frontotemporal Dementia causes you to lack the ability to understand the gravity of one's actions. That person is very focused on immediate gratification.

Alcohol abuse over time can have devastating effects on the brain. And it's not always noticeable.

Anyways, this isn't what this thread is about.
