In Memoriam Johnny Gaudreau & Matthew Gaudreau killed by drunk driver while cycling (MOD WARNING. No Flaming, Trolling, or Politics.)

Where do we have HIS lawyer chiming in? We do not have the entire picture--we do have the cops and DA building a slam dunk case. Before the statements given was his rights read to him. Did he suffer any injuries at the time of the accident that could have affected his mind--like a concussion? I was in an accident a few years ago and suffered a concussion that caused me some harm. Has the doctors released the drivers medical results.

So no we do not have all the information. We have only one side
Holy f***, man. You should really bow out here.

I’d highly recommend to stop posting and digging yourself a bigger hole, unless you enjoy being insulted and belittled.

On a certain level I get what you’re saying. But this is not the time or place to play devils advocate for an alleged drunk driver, and at best a reckless driver.

Adding to the tragedy, it appears from the driver's Facebook page that he also has a young family which will no doubt be negatively impacted by this.

RIP all I can say is I hope people think about there actions and what they can do before they get behind the wheel.

Absolutely terrible. I still don't have words. One of those losses that just grips you.

There's a difference between idealism and pragmatism. The idealism is that cycling on roads is completely legal and should be safe. The pragmatism is realizing that drivers in this country are aggressive assholes that give no regards for the safety of cyclists, pedestrians and even other drivers.

The Gaudreaus have absolutely no fault in this accident, the only thing "at fault" here is the asshole driver and the general messed up driver culture in this country. But you can pragmatically look at those and reasonably say "the lesson for cyclists is to bike as far away from cars as you can" while not blaming the Gaudreaus for the accident.

Just wanna chime in that I generally agree with what you and @tarheelhockey have said about this. It's not victim blaming. Emotions are high right now, they're guiding the thoughts/posts in this thread way moreso than logic and reason is. Understandable. I hope someday we can get to a point where biking on roads is safe for everyone, but most of our roads aren't designed for that, especially in rural areas. I blame society, as we've kinda come to normalize the idea that roads should be shared. They should be, but that entails them being designed and built to be, and they simply aren't. We shouldn't have normalized that idea so quickly when so many of our roads aren't up to par.

Unless it's on a designated bike trail/path myself and my family don't ride our bikes...Sharing the road with automobiles/semi trucks is incredibly dangerous.

RIP Gaudreau bros.
Agreed. I ride my bike out here in Colorado a lot, and have the luxury of having a ton of gravel trails that go for many miles. There are still plenty of folks who choose to ride their bikes on the road and I do my best to travel with them safely when I am in my car. Every year, in our state, we hear of similar tragedies as this which is scary as hell.

I would never ride my bike on a paved road as there are too many people that are so self centered and dumb that its not worth the risk.

It's so awful hearing more details on this story as more information is shared. Numbing.

What is the normal sentence for beheading and cannibalism in Canada? The guy willfully went of his prescribed meds. Would argue that is poor decision making worthy of a helluva sentence. He got a slap on the wrist and a new life....
I’m not arguing that the specific situation you’re describing is anything but a miscarriage of justice.

I only wrote that to say that there is a criteria for that, and alcohol/ drugs are not included in criminal cases where a defense of insanity/ inability to process right and wrong is heard.

My dad always said you can be right and dead at the same time.

Riding a bicycle on the roadway is so f***ing stupid I can’t wrap my head around it. There are many terrible drivers out there doing all kinds of stupid shit. Just because they may be at fault does not mean that you want to be the one in their way.

This sucks , but life sucks
god i f***ing hate this car culture bullshit where everything else can't have easy f***ing access to roads

I was hoping it was a hoax. Local news was saying the guy tried to pass another car on the right when that car moved left to make room for the brothers. On the eve of their sister's wedding. It's Lifetime levels of tragedy. The family must be inconsolable. There's nothing any of us can say here that will alleviate that.

It’s really not, though. The statement means exactly what it says and nothing more.
So you just don't understand what the word implicit means then?

Absolutely 100% agree. I bike a ton and it's just mind numbing when people bitch at me for going on the sidewalk rather than staying on a busy road. I'm concerned with my safety, not your comfort.
This is the 100% correct take actually. You can recognize that certain situations come with inherent risks and steps can be taken to lower that risk. Despite that, situations like this will still happen because some people are so reckless that the danger they pose simply can’t be mitigated.
