Totally, I mean who would want to live 45 minutes away from this?

Loud streets full of sidewalks with garbage all over the place, high crime rates, and small overpriced apartments beat this though amirite?
Moraine Lake and Valley of the Ten Peaks. Been there many times. Nothing tops the Canadian Rockies. 2 hours from Calgary, where I lived for 2 years.

Wife is from Philly area. It's not without it's good points, but I'm taking Calgary all day, every day.

Well, that's certainly your opinion.

I mean the only cities ranked ahead of Calgary for liveability were Vienna, Copenhagen, and Zurich.

Came out as the most liveable city in North America

I don’t for the life of me understand why this was allowed to get this far.

Allegedly, the Devils tried to get Tkachuk with the #2 pick.

How do you not hang up that call, get Gaudreau’s agent on the phone, make your final offer, and say “yes or no”?

If Gaudreau says no, you pull the trigger and end up with Wright or Slafkovsky. You trade Gaudreau’s rights to the Devils for a 3rd or whatever. Maybe even do a sign and trade and get an actual prospect back.

Instead, you have no top-2 pick, and you’re staring down the barrel of the exact same situation you just went through with an inferior player who you most assuredly will never be able to trade for a top-2 pick again.

Garbage GMing.

Gaudreau’s not blameless here either - tell them you’re not coming back in your exit interview.

This town and this team treated you like royalty. They treated your family like royalty. From the moment you got here.

Nobody said you had to stay, but you knew three months ago what you were doing. You owed them the courtesy of allowing them to make moves in the best interest of the franchise.

Thanks for the memories. Now f*** off.

As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry not far from Calgary, it is astonishing how many NHLers retire in Calgary that never played there or were from there. I've met so many as they bring there kids to my city for their tournaments.

These rankings don’t mean shit to people that are over the top wealthy.

It’s almost laughable that we are having this conversation/argument about it.

All things being equal, is someone really picking Calgary over LA, NY, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Vancouver…. I could go on.

No one is slandering the city of Calgary. Just stating that if you have financial freedom, it is not a city that screams “I need to be there”.

You clearly don’t know a damn thing about Calgary so you should probably keep your yapper shut. Google an image of Calgary. See the Rockies? Heard of Banff? Lake Louise? Never mind. Stay ignorant.
Oh please, like I said it's a nice place to visit and if you are from there and love it good for you but for the other 99% it's cow country. Yes, it's pretty, and not too long ago before the oil and gas money flooded in Calgary, as most of Canada was on its knees. Its money was near worthless and there was no opportunity. Most of the people that lived there were poor. It's poverty with a view for quite a few of those poor souls. No one wants to sign long-term there. Back to the drawing board, you go. Enjoy the lower basement of the NHL standings for 10 more years and with the new draft rules don't expect back to back to back lottery picks.

I’m an Oilers fan but I don’t take any joy in this. I’ve seen Wayne Gretzky get sold. Paul Coffey leave for leave for more money, Messier get sold. Doug Weight. Cujo. And on and on. I know how it feels and how much it sucks. It’s a gut punch, especially when you are an emotionally invested youngster.

At the end of the day it's still Western Canada, it's farm land and frozen tundra.
And mountains and lakes and some of the nicest scenery in the world , but ya it has fields and it does freeze in winter. It also gets +100f there in summer . Its not as bad as people think.
I’ll be right back , I got to hook up my dogsled and travel to the nearest trading post to pick up some essentials for my igloo.

Dude's just about to sign a $70+M contract, not to mention the millions of dollars he's already made.

Mid-Western Canada being kinda cheap means nothing to him.

Are you serious? Did you not see a prime raging 03/04 Jarome Iginla put the team on his back and single handedly carrying a mediocre Flames team to the SCF and just about won it in game 7? Iginla in his prime was an unstoppable force when the pressure was on. Gaudreau not so much.

Lol it was a Cinderella run where Iginla did nothing in the final two games...huge choke.

Then never got out of the first round until he was a 3rd liner being carried by greater men.

Snipes, I know you a good dude and all but Gaudreau could care less if Calgary is a livable city or not. He's about to secure the bag and the one thing on his mind is 'most liveable city' in North America.

Its like saying Aaron Rodgers choose Green Bay because he likes living there, he should as he has 50 million reasons to be there.

And what about the Spezza's of the world back in the day? Born and raised in Canada. The cap is a lie and it's time to let go of the parity myth.
A lot of Canadian hockey players are more than happy to get out of the spotlight. A lot of American hockey players are eager to get on the first plane home.

If California, New York, and Florida were able to outbid everybody with no cap on top of those things nobody else would ever win a cup.

Uh no....I wouldn't call Sask all that nice....and parts of Alberta are dismal......British Columbia though is our nicest province for sure....

Sask has some nice lakes and if you’ve ever been out to a farm with all the crops in full bloom in the summer it’s gorgeous in its own way.

The stars are incredible on the prairies at night, they don’t call it the land of the living skies for no reason.

The Rockies on the Alberta/BC border area is unbeatable though, it never ceases to be jaw dropping everytime. I just start smiling on the drive out when we head out there, winter or summer. You’re in an entirely different world less than an hour from the city.

I love Western Canada. As far as the cold winters, I sincerely love the cold. You don’t need to force us to go outside in -20 degrees in the winter, we do that willingly and enjoy it for the most part.

Some people not from Western Canada might find it strange, but the rugged majestic beauty of the landscape out here makes it a special place.

I feel bad for Flames fans but I was convinced he wasn't going to re-sign.
Most American players prefer to play in the US. Heck, so do most Canadian players.

Whatever the reason, taxes, weather, lower overall cost of living, more gated communities that offer protection and other amenities.

Other than Tavares (because of his wife I believe) what star player has come home in his prime?

I've said it before, Canadian players playing in the states usually retire there. American players playing in Canada go home after their careers are over, European players also usually go home.

How many non Canadian players playing for the Raptors or Blue Jays live year round in the GTA?
Probably not many.

Four of the five best NHL players ever, stayed in the US. Howe, Orr, Gretzky , and Lemieux.

Of course there's a few Canadian players that come home but that's at the end of their careers.

This was in response to it being called a frozen tundra wasteland which is demonstrably false.

The more logical explanation rather than bashing Western Canada is that he wants to be close to his family with his pregnant wife.
