Now, they can't take him out because he's playing well. Hart hasn't collapsed like Andersen did yet and now they have no margin for error. I think the safer move would have been to go Hill in Game 5 instead of Game 6 with the season on the line.
I don't know about that. I mean, Hart hasn't been awful, but at the same time he's given up 4+ goals every single game. That's not exactly a high bar for Hill to match.

this independant youtuber makes a good point.

Yzerman didn't really draft well outside of the 1st round.

gaveaway Wallman
could have kept Hronek, and probably would have made the playoffs.
Justin Faulk trade extremely underwhelming

While I partially agree with some of the posters who say Torts says these things to deflect critics onto him, the fact Hart hasnt exactly looked awful is only part of the issue. Torts probably went into the room tearing into his team for more not finishing their own chances and taking dumb penalties than looking at goaltending, just as he probably did in the OT win for getting loose with the big lead and letting the Canes back in.

Hart hasnt looked bad the way Andersen looked bad and the fact Hart had a level of hatred against him before joining any team (and the frustration following the level of success he had) is what playing a pretty big part here too.

Hart in the playoffs is the only time the Knights have received good goaltending all year period and Hill is only on the bench because he has been there and can help Hart out with managing the moment. I could only see Hill getting any action if Hart was in one of those games where a team gives up a ton early and they make the switch to get him outta there for a reset.

Bussi was a far superior goalie than Andersen during the regular season too so making the switch is a far easier and more rational too than Vegas doing anything in that area. It would be like if Dobes had given up a couple more goals in the Canes losses and the Habs decided to switch to Monty instead.....although the horrible Montebeault was actually somehow a better a starter than Hill this year so that might be unfair to him.

Hart has been f***ing dog shit.

Rod switched to Bussi and now theyre on the cusp of winning.

One coach adapted. The other is shitting himself with rage for being questioned about sticking by the historically bad goalie.

You have all the answers right? Change goalies and all of a sudden things will be ok right? It's so easy to coach from your couch, so many cup winners out there just waiting for a shot!

I've always loved Tort's abuse of the media, because let's face it- most of them deserve it. But this was a completely legit question. And one must question his sanity continuing to play this kind of a goaltender who just get BTFO again and again. I'll bet he gets fired into the sun at D+1 after the Canes finish them.

No. This is a deliberate tactic from Torts and he's done it consistently to deflect attention away from his players and put the scrutiny on him. People who follow the league know this.

Meh. There are words to achieve the same without the clown show. If he really trusts Hart 100%, no need for any shenanigans. Just say it straight that you have full confidence in your netminders, but that Hart hasn't given you any reason to consider switching to Hill.

Instead, his response shows that he either doesn't know how the answer, or he has the answer but doesn't want to say it.

He backed one player while throwing another under the bus, and he didn't have to be a dick to back his player anyway. I don't understand why people think he needed to be. 'Of course not, Hart is our goalie' works just as well as an answer.

Hill sitting on the bench minding his own business, not feeling any heat and happy it's not him being lit-up on the ice, when suddenly in a presser Torts torches him to ashes with a back-handed flamethrower comment in support of the other guy.

Thanks a lot New Coach!

At least a goalie switch would be some sort of change. I dont need to be Steven f***ing Spielberg to tell you the new Scary Movie sucks just like I dont need to be Al Arbour to say that Torts is making a dumb ass decision.

One wouldn't question his sanity if he chose to put a goalie in net who haven't played a game in 2 months and when he played games were one of the worst goalies in the league?

Hart is playing like crap in the SCF, but he's the reason VGK moved past Anaheim. They couldn't score on him and his play allowed his teammates to run their system and neutralize Anaheim's speed.

Without Hart VGK likely is not in the SCF.

Didn’t Torts roast his own goalie back in the day for giving up 4 goals on 16 shots? Hart has been barely better than that this series lol
when he was coaching the New York Rangers, John Tortorella absolutely put his goalie on blast for a brutal stat line. [1, 2]
In a post-game press conference, he called out netminder Dany Sabourin (who allowed 4 goals on 16 shots), saying:
"It's deflating to see sixteen shots and four of them in the net, let's call a spade a spade... Four goals in sixteen shots... I'm really tired of the 25-percent rule." [1]

Again, it is deliberate. If he just says, "Hart is my guy", then the media and online chatter is still about how Hart has been bad in the series.

By going over the top, the conversation is now about Torts being a crazy person instead of Hart struggling. Judging by the reactions to this thread, that obviously worked.

Its not quite the same thing thing.

Hart came came in because hill was struggling all season. Hart had he far stronger record.

Whereas bussi played more games than freddie and had better numbers than Freddy all year.

You could say the Knights already used their goalie switch card during the season.

Carolina went back to the guy thay got it done for them all year..... so the Knights respond by putting in the guy who has struggled all year? Nah

Coming back cold after being destroyed in this last few games, Hill might give up 10 goals before he even gets his timing back. Doesn't seem like a good gamble for an elimination game.

Whether the team has any confidence in Hill is another matter too, since Hill's last few games were so bad that he was basically single-handedly losing them for the Knights and one could tell that the team could see this as well as anybody. Not a lot of hugs and pats on the helmets, but rather players visibly kept their distance from him as they all went to the lockerroom.

How do you figure "it worked"? You are talking about it as if people are capable of only having a single conversation. Sure, we now have "Torts is a clown" chatter, but it hasn't diminished "Hart's a sieve" chatter. And yeah, the distraction may have given him enough time to dodge the question, and stunned the press room enough not to follow up, but even the dumbest person eventually sees that he dodged the question.
