John Tavares the Man the Myth the Legend

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

What are our plans for replacing JT besides the just let him go mantra?
Fantasies, mostly. You can't get better for this role in this market to play 2nd line centre for under 7M. JT is the devil we know, and he's proven he can play here already. Most men we get here turn into Foligno's, Clarksons, O'Reillys, and Laughtons. Not this guy.

Again, tho.. not a Contract thread. This is about the player.

I still can't believe how much complaining this guy has had to take from Leafs fans over his tenure here. Tavares is a GREAT player. But people were convinced he'd regress and be overpaid on this contract, so they hated on him.

And even now, here we are with him in the last year of his contract and he's over point-per-game and has over 30 goals. Yet people don't want to extend him because they're assuming he'll regress. 7 mill for a #2 center is great value. And he's going to be a great player during that contract too.

Contract talk aside, I'm glad he's part of the team, and I thing he's going to be a big part of a deep playoff run coming up.

11 mil for a 2c was worth every complaint let’s not kid ourselves Hes looking good but not for 11 mil when his cap hit takes a dip then I’m sure the complaining will dip with it

If it wasn’t for the lack of playoff success he’d honestly be looked at as one of the best unrestricted free agent signings. Extremely consistent throughout his contract.

I don't think his 11m brought value as much as ppl are saying.

For 10m+ I expect the player to carry a line and teams to game plan against you. Tavares production was nice but let's not kid ourselves, he wasn't a franchise player the past 7 years.

Moving forward, he's a 34+ 2C/2W for about 60 points, that's a 5-6m for 3 years given his age

You might be light given the expected cap increases the next 3 years. Hopefully he gives the Leafs a discount and defers money to bring the AAV down. He'd gain a ton of goodwill from the fans if he did.

What will he do against Tampa or Florida in the playoffs ? He’s having a great season so far but can he produce against superior competition? Can a top heavy, two line team go on a deep playoff run ? If the answers to the above are no, then team construction needs to change and all bets are off unless he’s willing to take a significant haircut.
