IMO Mitch Love is the next great NHL coach.

Bonus points that he has junior coaching experience, probably good for a guy coming to a team that will be (getting) very young.

He was just a minor league plug as a player but he’s surprisingly cerebral as a coach. Fighting and hitting is how he made a career but he accepts those days are long gone and doesn’t try to coach every player into being a grinder like him.

He runs the Caps D and has certainly gotten good mileage out of those guys.

Assistants are important so Nelson or Sturm or whoever else we have an eye on as HC can maybe find a smaller role as an assistant. Add an oldhead like Boudreau for the experience.

This is the face of an ambitious prospect before he gets Sullified. Look at all the hope in those eyes.
It's gonna suck to see his spirit get crushed.

After the end of this season, he will have 2 years of NHL assistant experience. Be shocked if he doesnt get a good look somewhere. Might be a coach the Flyers go after.

Honestly I’ll give Sullivan credit here, this is exactly how they should be using McGroarty and Koivunen. I understand Rakell at C is mostly due to Malkin being out, but I’m pretty sure they’d be running with:

McGroarty-Crosby-Rust
Koivunen-Malkin-Rakell

With Malkin healthy. That may just be their top-6 for next year. With Novak and Tomasino’s history together in Nashville, I could see that being 2/3 of their 3rd line for next year too.

I’d rather go with:

McGroarty-Crosby-Rakell
Koivunen-Malkin-Rust
XXXX-Novak-Tomasino

But I’ll take the W as is.

I'd love to clean out the 4th line and put in Ponomarev and Poulin in place of Hayes and Acciari, but that's probably a dream too great for this team.

I think Hayes is definitely gone this off-season, a significantly rising cap with Hayes only having 1 year left will make him tradeable IMO. He has 11 goals and 21 points in 57 games and has about a 53% faceoff% this year. I wouldn't expect much back but I think you could get a 4th or 5th for him in the off-season.

My bet is their forward lineup looks something like:

McGroarty-Crosby-Rust
Koivunen-Malkin-Rakell
UFA-Novak-Tomasino
Dewar-Lizotte-Acciari
Ponomarev-Hallander

I'm not assuming that Acciari will be gone until he's actually gone.

So happy we kept Rakell to *checks notes* play with Sidney Crosby.

Nope, couldn’t cash in on a sellers market because who else would be able to play with him, a kid from WBS? Dream on.

Damn it's so unfortunate that the Penguins are legally not allowed to trade Rakell because they didn't trade him at the deadline. Tough break!

This team could trade nothing for Connor McDavid and some of you will still find something to whine about.

And they could randomly shoot 3 people in the crowd per night and some of you would find a way it makes Kyle Dubas a genius.

Yep, he could get injured OR the market might not be so friendly IF or when they try to move him in the future. He's soon to be 32 not 27, so that's another negative. He should have been moved 100%!

That's surprisingly decent for our idiot coach. Except for Dewar on line 2. I know, I know, "it's because Geno is hurt." But come the f on, dude. After Imama and acciari, that's like, the worst option.

I think Poulin is going to be in the mix next year, perhaps over Ponomarev - who they seem to be exclusively looking at as a center - or Hallander, who we still need clarity on.

It’s not that the market might not be so friendly, it isn’t going to be, and likely never will be while Rakell is still under contract. This was the strongest market for sellers that I can ever remember.

Beau got moved for a 5th twice in the last 2 years and suddenly his value jumped up to 2nd. We got paid to take on Glass 5 months ago and suddenly he’s worth a positive 2nd. What exactly did he do here to increase his value in that time? It was insanity. Anything not bolted down should have been traded.

This team has given basically zero indication that they view Poulin as a part of their future. I'm not seeing anything that makes me think he's going to be "in the mix" next year.

I don't think much of Ponomarev either at this point, but he was a piece that Dubas brought in and becomes waiver eligible next year. I think there is almost no chance they waive him to give Poulin a spot, when Poulin wasn't a Dubas acquisition and the current team has shown basically nothing that suggests they view him as a NHL option.

The Poulin stuff seems to be more people here trying to speak it into existence than the team suggesting it may happen.

I could not agree more! I mean literally could not! It was a missed opportunity in the friendliest of markets.

Whatever helps you sleep at night bud.

I'm not acting like not trading Rakell with 3 years left on his deal is somehow going to be the downfall of this organization :dunno:
Nah, the Rakell situation is just a symptom of the bigger problem that will keep this organization lingering in mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

It does not make me particularly happy to see where this is headed, but it is what it is.
