The difference between this year and last year. As well as his first year in Toronto where he had his career season. He's not captain. His best seasons in junior, he was not captain. That captaincy has been a huge weight in his shoulders. Not having it allows him to focus on playing.

Then for all that is good and holy, first, how could he not have been aware all these years on how the captaincy has been affecting his performance and second, if he did realize it why didn't he raise this issue and step aside so that someone else could be captain?

If it is true - and I don't think it is - that Tavares was truly "involved" in the decision to give the "C" to Matthews, then kudos to him for stepping up. Just about 6-7 years too late...

I think when you're in it, you might not realize how it affects you, maybe... ?

But wait.. hold on, here..Who are we kidding actually..?!? Dude is a perennial near ppg player for 2 Teams. I don't know if captaincy really had any effect on him statistically, in all reality - just so happens his 2 best years were his first as a Leaf (probably heartfelt 'dream come true' reasons, rather than not being the Captain) and this year (but let's keep in mind we're only halfway). The consistency is actually sick and awe-inspiring at once.

So ya - probably not the captaincy, but if it is - I'll take it cuz he ain't anymore!

Then we would have to reconsider if he should be here.
A 4 year deal would probably be perfect until either Minten or Cowan is ready or develops. 2nd line centers arent easy to find.

Ya.. literally here just means he scored the winning goal in the only playoff series we won. So, literally. He also scored the only other potential series winning goal on a beauty against Tampa in another series too - but you know... Justin Holl got in the way!

Lmaoooooo
He was injured in the Montreal series and got mostly a shut down assignment last year vs Boston.

I liked the deal from the start but if you had told me on the 7th year of this deal Tavares would be objectively the 3rd best forward on the team and on a 40 goal pace, I would have loved the deal even more. This guy completely lived up to his end of the bargain. The only question is what to sign him for moving forward. Very complicated question. I would hope after getting paid $77M he'd take a team friendly deal, but who knows. Anything more than $4Mx3 and it's a hard no for me no matter how much I like him.

I don't see anything below $6mm.

He might love Toronto, but I doubt he loves it $6mm worth.

If Stamkos got 8x4 and the cap is going up... id think that the only way Tavares takes 6.5 is if its x7 or 8.
In reality..? Maybe. That is official market value for this tier/age/stats.

Buuuuuuuuuut - lol - in our hometown discount framing fantasies - we're all banking on him not being completely tone deaf, like the other boys have been - and taking a healthy cut to finally make this contract worry a thing of the past officially.

This is Toronto. There are no fantasies or discounts. Only currencies and bank commercials

Keep in mind, it won't be a 35+ contract as he won't be 35 by June 30th., 2025.

Malkin for example is a 35+ contract, and he got 4*$6.1mm coming off a PPG season, when the Cap was lower.

Tavares is currently on a PPG pace.

That ballpark would be a good hometown discount for sure.

Not 4 years at 8.5...we need front line players at that price not 3rd line centers. With AM nit being 100% in the future our window is gone
