Saw the first and the third. JT looks good this game. Not bc he scored a hatty but he was moving well.
Malgin had a good game too, it seems like every time he was on the ice, he wants to make thing happens. Also really like this 4th line.
3rd line is quiet but did the job. Didn’t notice Holmberg too much, which is a good thing.

Punished a team that we should beat .
With some key players missing the Flyers looked decidedly weak.

The true test comes on Saturday against Boston.

Nice game by JT.

Missed my 4th game.in a row. How did Holmberg look?
He's very good positionally and makes some smart plays, overall not a great game though, in the offensive zone or on the breakout most of his plays were slightly misfiring and he looked a bit scared to drive the play, preferring to pass the puck off and defer to a teammate (not too unexpected for a first game though). Overall I do like him.

Samsonov might have been our weakest player tonight.
I liked that they stuck with it and didn't give them anything easy (well Samsonov might have).
Gross number of penalties on both sides.
Thought the lineup top to bottom did what is needed to be successful. ZAR finding his way, looking better each game. Malgin is nifty, sometimes.
I like Mete. I love Tavares!

If he had grabbed someone they would have dropped their gloves right after. And then what?
You have the last guy on the roster you ever want in a fight now in a fight.

It's not hard to get yourself into scrums without actually fighting - Bunting does it all the time.

Not all situations are the same.

Multiple Flyers would have loved to fight Matthews in this one. As soon as he attempted to grab one of them they would have taken it as a free invitation to drop their gloves and fight without having to worry about the late game instigator penalty and the resulting suspension.

A far more talented team beats a weak team missing key players.

The system still looks poor. The players look like they have no idea what to do when they enter the offensive zone.

That said, Tavares with some absolute stellar play this season. I think Tavares, Nylander and Giordano have been standout performers this year

Fancy sentences don't help your point. Matthews did the smart thing. Don't get hurt just make yourself look tough
There is so much middle ground between what happened and breaking your hand.

Don't have to go full tilt like Ovi in the playoffs mid successful cup run.

But whatever, good on the guys that got dirty during a much needed statement game.

That sucked no doubt.

34 didnt bother dropping his stick. Had that same smile against Weber back a bit. Didnt like it then either.
He's had a couple of shoulder surgeries and wrist surgery. I was hoping he'd steer clear.

I'm fine with it. The game is played whistle to whistle.

Tavares with 7 goals and 14 points in 11 games to start the season. Nice start.

Looks like a fully healthy off-season did wonders for his conditioning.
And he was injured for most of the preseason, so that makes his start even more impressive.

Samsonov was weakest? He wasn't standing on his head or the main reason they won but he made 2 huge amazing saves, so he stood tall when the team needed it. One of those saves will probably be considered among the saves of the year. He swallowed pucks and also was just not allowing much overall.

The first goal was just a pure snipe, nobody was stopping that. The 2nd goal was soft for sure though.

Right. A guy who has had wrist surgery and a couple of shoulder surgeries, and you'd want him to do that?

Critical thinking says hell no.

Sounds like a excuse wrapped inside some specious medical information.

Yes, I wanted to see Matthews flex on Konecny so he's not constantly exposed to yappy challengers and fake tough guys who know they can get a couple of shots in for free.

Samsonov was high end athletic when he needed to be tonight. You shouldn't be taxed to do more vs Philadelphia and it was a tidy 2 GAA effort.

The game was pretty much over at that point and the Leafs was winning 5-2, what’s the point of AM dropping the gloves? I can see that if the score was reverse and AM didn’t drop the gloves to lead charge. Then he deserves to be called out

One other thing: Every time Malgin plays, his lines are buzzing.

The man had a 92 xGF% today. His assist was a bit fluky but he is such a smart player who rarely makes mistakes.

He feasted on their terrible depth. They are face punchers and low skill grinders. He wasn't afraid to take some good one timers too on the 2nd PP.

I hope he can continue that level of play. I expect him to be inconsistent but it'd be nice if he gave us Kase contributions offensively.

I'm glad they won and showed some life in the end but it was pretty much a sleepy low gear home game against a bad team on a back to back. Wins against these types of teams are never guaranteed but yes, Saturday is a much bigger test.

The last thing you want is your superstar dropping the gloves in the 11th game of the season in a dominated tilt for some weird fight nobody will remember in a months time. It doesn't change any optics either.

I loved Gio jumping in like that. Last thing this defense needs is him getting on the IR though on a dumb scrum.
