Too bad with the loss, I thought this was the year he would lift the SC. He still has that winner's mentality and he showed he can still be a game changer, but he clearly does not fit the Leafs style of play. A big mistake of a signing if there ever was one. We would take him back if your team ate most of his remaining contract.

I guess he tried harder at the end of the series but still wasn't nearly good enough. So really, he's a perfect rep for this team

How many times did he just fall on his ass from the slightest contact while battling for the puck? I can understand the lack of footspeed but there are sluggish skaters who still have the core strength to stay on their damn skates.

He's been our best player in the elimination games he's played IMO. We talk about needing guys to step up and he seems to consistently elevate his game when needed, but the team hasn't followed suit
He plays the direct game a team needs to compete in elimination games. Skating around, keeping possession and scoring pretty goals is a lot easier in November. Much harder to do in game 7.

Made me sick to hear again that once again, it was Jason Spezza rallying the team instead of the big four, or our captain.

JT's play at the end of the series certainly picked up, and that's great. But he should not be the captain of the Maple Leafs.

At this point, Spezza deserves the C more than anyone else on the team.
Spezza might actually be done. The falloff in his game from last season was huge. I think he is 8:00 a night if he is even back next season so no C for him. But whatever is going on in JTs life I agree he doesnt need the C. There was little or no on-ice leadership from him during the regular season. This is Matthews' team and if being the captain squeezes an iota more game.out.of AM then you have to do it.

Probably half the teams in the league would take him if we "ate most of his remaining contract".

I was not seriously suggesting that Spezza should be out captain, just that he continues to show more leadership than our supposed leaders.

I was all aboard the Matthews captain train originally too - but giving him the C to try and get more consistency out of him is crazy.

Not so great to hear Spezza having to really provide leadership to Tavares in a big moment. Shouldn’t we expect the captain to settle down the troops?

From what we've seen of JT's personality, does anyone really expect him to show any semblance of captaincy in the room?

Organization rushed to give the big name the C, instead of finding the right captain.

Well, the trouble is he’s captain via political appointment and ideally should be in more of a Hossa type role than the captain. He can be a solid dude in the room but he’s not really the most natural leader of men from the looks of things. Though he gets credit for coming up big later in the series.

I'm not sure I'm willing to give him the same credit for showing up halfway through a series as you are.

He's the captain of the Maple Leafs - if anyone should be showing up on time and setting an example, it's him.

The fact that he played 4 terrible games before deciding to play hard is exactly the problem with this team. The bar is so low, showing up for 3 games in a 7 game series is considered acceptable.

As to whether that would actually push AM to even greater heights who knows? Glen Sather said he named 24 year old Gretzky team captain because he was the same age as the core players and it was felt he might be able to better influence the young guys. The guy who gave up the captaincy was 28 year old Lee Fogolin who just said "maybe a change like that will win us a Stanley Cup." Matty is going to get the C eventually as long as he doesn't leave as a UFA so is there any benefit to waiting until JT is ineffective? If Dubas is looking to make real changes to change the club's fortunes it seems like its time.

He legit competes every shift and still has a way of getting a shot away or a deft tip in heavy traffic but man alive he is glacial on his skates.

get a top 2nd line centre and move Jt to the wing. That will be the best thing for the 2nd line. Thought they were average all season. Trade Nylander as that chip.

JT is still good just not 2nd line centre elite good for championship hopes. He gotta ggo to the wing

I don't really want to continue with him because I'm not sure what kind of quality we'll get in 2023 and beyond, but still appreciate the little boost at the end of the series.

I'll admit it was nice to see him actually finally show up and be useful, as I really didn't think he had it in him.

Unfortunately, I just don't see how we can move that contract, so I guess we have to learn to take whatever we can get from him as he continues to decline.

I think I would still have a chat about the future with Tavares this summer if I were MLSE. How do we feel, should we keep going, do we part ways, etc.

Of course, but JT isn't going to relocate his family with a NMC, and even if he was willing to, which other team is taking on that contract? Not to mention Dubas is far too stubborn and loyal to even consider asking.
