John Tavares was pretty good in Game 6 and 7, so he's still got some juice when it matters. But I do worry about what his next 82 games in the regular season looks like.
To me I could careless what he does in 82 games, it is the 83 games and onward that matters. If he can play like he did the last two games, that’s good enough for me.

Makes sense during an 115 point season. I just worry if the team takes a step back next year due to cap, and we're in a less favorable position in the standings and have to play a juggernaut.

For me, it's mostly a concern of what the ROI is on $11 million. He still seems effective when the ice has been shrunken down and his linemates help wrestle down the pace of the play and he can play his stand still game. But the problem is the Leafs are also not designed to play that way. So how do you keep him out of open ice when the team wants to thrive in open ice?
Macro level: his production is good enough for the contract, more or less. He’s not the problem.

Micro level: you may be right about the play style. I don’t think he cost the Leafs anything but he’s not exactly thriving despite his good production.

I think overpaying JT two million is better than not having him at all.

Tavares will only cost somebody about 5.2m for 3 years after we pay his next bonus.

Anywhere that would be appetizing for and he'd waive to go there?

IMO C comes off him ASAP without needing for it to be embarassing.

Tavares is the most boring, average player ive ever seen. What does he actually do? A goal in game 6 great what dod he do today and previous 5 games
Don't think Keefe system works for him. Keefes style is for fast players... look at how much Ritchie struggled here. Keefe style is very exciting to watch but it also results in a lot of mistakes because of all the moving.

Tavares seems to work best when the attack is set up down low and there's nothing happening open ice... But the Leafs mostly want to play in open ice with speed so there's a big mismatch in styles. Don't know what the future will hold but Tavares did a great job digging deep and scoring some clutch goals in this series, even if it was undone by NHL officiating.

I don't think 5.2 per in actual cash is the problem, but the 11M cap hit.

How many teams have that much cap space, and are any of them teams that JT would willingly waive his NMC to go to?

If the ref didn’t called that penalty, Leafs would have scored again in the next minute and blow the game open. They have the momentum, fans were the loudest and they all were energized.

Anyhow, I really think JT should switch to LW with AM and MM next season. Let Willie be C with Bunting and Kase/Robertson.

Best leaf in this series
He was in game 6 for sure. Might have been in game 7 as well.
I have no issue with his effort, and he was moving better in this series than the regular season.

Was he battling some sort of back issue? I just read that somewhere else... I don't think I heard about that before now. No idea if true.

11 million, piano on his back, Tavares is as gutless as the rest of that room...

yes a massive piano on his back, been there for 10 years.

Made me sick to hear again that once again, it was Jason Spezza rallying the team instead of the big four, or our captain.

JT's play at the end of the series certainly picked up, and that's great. But he should not be the captain of the Maple Leafs.

At this point, Spezza deserves the C more than anyone else on the team.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder if they win even 1 series within this guy's 7 year contract window. Completely overrated, overpaid, invisible most nights, and should have the C stripped off his jersey if we're being real
